Summary:
- Star Trek alum Sir Patrick Stewart recalled his time working with Tom Hardy in Star Trek: Nemesis, emphasizing how the latter almost never communicated with his co-stars.
- Interestingly, Hardy also stars in a Marvel franchise just like Stewart, though their films belong to different universes.
- Proving Stewart wrong, Hardy’s popularity has skyrocketed ever since and doesn’t show any sign of stopping.
Despite the close circle that actors often have, not everyone can get along on set. This is especially true with Sir Patrick Stewart and the rest of the Star Trek: Nemesis crew, as they had to work with a co-star who preferred not to communicate with others.
Surprisingly, that actor is no one else but Tom Hardy, one of the most prominent Marvel stars in the last 5 years.
At the time, Hardy was beginning his Hollywood journey, and he Hardy-ly joined any meet and greet with his co-stars (pun intended). According to Sir Patrick Stewart, Hardy spent a considerable amount of time secluded in his trailer with his girlfriend, rather than mingling with fellow cast members. This behavior led Stewart to believe he might not hear much from Hardy after Nemesis, where Hardy made his sole appearance in the Star Trek franchise.
In his memoir, Stewart reflects on Hardy’s isolated behavior on set, describing him as “an odd, solitary young man from London.” He even thought that he might never see Hardy again, but boy, was he proven wrong.
“[He] never said, ‘Good morning,’ never said, ‘Goodnight,’ and spent the hours he wasn’t needed on set in his trailer with his girlfriend. He was by no means hostile – it was just challenging to establish any rapport with him. On the evening [he] wrapped his role, he characteristically left without ceremony or niceties, simply walking out of the door. As it closed, I said quietly to [my co-stars], ‘And there goes someone I think we shall never hear of again,” Stewart recalled.
Despite the initial impression and Nemesis‘ underwhelming box office performance, Hardy’s career trajectory dramatically changed. His breakthrough came with Christopher Nolan’s Inception, and he continued to ascend, starring in major films like The Dark Knight Rises, Venom, and Mad Max: Fury Road. Today, Hardy is recognized as one of Hollywood’s leading stars, much to the delight of Stewart, who expressed joy at being proven wrong about the former’s potential.
“It gives me nothing but pleasure that Tom has proven me so wrong,” said a jubilant Stewart.
With Venom 3 scheduled to release on October 24, marking the last dance in the beloved anti-hero franchise, Hardy’s career shows no signs of slowing down, demonstrating how far he has come since his days on the Star Trek: Nemesis set.
