Mark Ruffalo is celebrated for his memorable roles in films such as “13 Going on 30” and “Poor Things,” and he’s widely recognized for his portrayal of Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With multiple Oscar nominations and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Ruffalo’s career is impressive.
Beyond acting, he’s a committed environmental activist and co-founder of The Solutions Project, which supports climate justice. Despite his public success and amiable demeanor, Ruffalo has faced significant health challenges and personal struggles that are less well-known.
#1. The Brain Tumor That Changed Everything
In a January 2024 episode of the “SmartLess” podcast, Mark Ruffalo opened up about a life-altering experience from the early 2000s: his battle with a brain tumor.
He described how a vivid dream led him to suspect a serious health issue, saying, “It wasn’t even a voice… It was just pure knowledge, ‘You have a brain tumor, and you have to deal with it immediately.’”
At the time, his wife, Sunrise Coigney, was pregnant with their first child, adding a layer of stress to the situation.
Ruffalo went for a medical evaluation, and a scan revealed a mass behind his left ear the size of a golf ball. The tumor, known as an acoustic neuroma, is a noncancerous growth on the nerve connecting the inner ear to the brain.
Ruffalo had experienced an ear infection earlier, which might have been a subtle sign of the problem. He chose not to tell his wife about his condition until after their baby was born and just before his surgery.
#2. A Life-Threatening Surgical Procedure
Surgery, especially one involving delicate nerves and anesthesia, comes with inherent risks. Ruffalo had previously experienced a severe reaction to anesthesia, leading to heightened anxiety about the procedure.
During the operation to remove the acoustic neuroma, Ruffalo’s heart stopped temporarily—a terrifying complication.
The medical team successfully revived him, and the tumor was removed in its entirety, which was deemed a success. However, this close call highlighted the serious risks associated with such operations.
#3. The Struggle with Facial Paralysis
Post-surgery, Ruffalo encountered an unexpected complication: facial paralysis. The tumor’s location on the nerve responsible for facial movements meant that the surgery had a risk of causing facial paralysis.
Ruffalo expressed his fear about the potential impact on his career, saying, “I woke up and my face was paralyzed, and they didn’t know if it was ever going to come back. And I couldn’t even close my eye. I looked terrible.”
He explored various treatments, including energy healers, acupuncture, and craniosacral therapy, to regain facial movement. Fortunately, the paralysis resolved within a year, a rare outcome that provided him with valuable insights into life’s fragility and his own resilience.
#4. The Hulk’s Anger and Personal Reflection
Mark Ruffalo’s struggles with anger and feeling like an outsider resonate with his Marvel character, Bruce Banner/The Hulk.
At the 2023 Emerald City Comic-Con, Ruffalo shared his youthful challenges with anger, saying, “That anger, that unexpressed anger… That’s always been something that I’ve related to.”
He reflected on how his experiences of being told he was doing things wrong contributed to his feelings of frustration.
This anger also influenced his early acting career, where he often dealt with rejection and had to cover up holes in his apartment walls with posters. As he matured, Ruffalo channeled his anger into positive actions, becoming an advocate for environmental and social justice issues.
#5. Ongoing Battle with Depression
Mark Ruffalo has been transparent about his mental health struggles, including undiagnosed dyslexia, ADHD, and depression during his youth. The suicide of a close friend in 1994 profoundly impacted him, leading to the realization that “death wasn’t an escape, that suicide wasn’t an answer.” (via Parade)
Despite this insight, Ruffalo has continued to struggle with dysthymia, a long-term, low-grade form of depression. He has openly discussed his ongoing challenges and the methods he uses to manage his mental health, helping to shed light on these issues and support others facing similar struggles.
