Romy and Michele are getting closer to that long-anticipated reunion. Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow have confirmed in separate interviews that a sequel to their 1997 cult comedy is in the early stages of development, so early that original screenwriter Robin Schiff hasn’t even finalized the idea yet. Sorvino appeared on “Today” (via EW) and teased, “We’re getting closer. Something might be in the works.”
Romy and Michele‘s much-awaited reunion is coming closer. A sequel to Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow’s 1997 cult comedy is now in the planning phases, which is so soon that original screenwriter Robin Schiff hasn’t even finished the concept yet, according to Sorvino and Kudrow’s respective interviews. “We’re getting closer,” Sorvino revealed on “Today” (via EW). “Something might be in the works,” she added.
“There’s nothing official to report, but I can unofficially hint that we’re closer than we’ve ever been to getting something to happen,” Sorvino shared about a sequel to “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.”
A couple of hours later, Kudrow revealed in an interview on SiriusXM that Schiff is “thinking about it and coming up with something. Isn’t that thrilling?”
The characters of Romy and Michele were developed by Schiff for her stage production of “Ladies’ Room,” which featured Kudrow, in 1988. Kudrow was co-starred by Sorvino, Academic award winner, in the 1997 picture, which was a modest box office success but gradually grew into a cult classic. When Sorvino and Kudrow rejoined each other at the SAG Awards in February to deliver an award, they rekindled interest in a “Romy and Michele” follow-up. They matched the metallic minidresses they wore in the movie by donning pink and blue suits.
“Do you think that this is the cutest anyone has ever looked at an awards show?” Invoking a passage of dialogue from the movie, Kudrow questioned Sorvino. Then Sorvino said, “I just realized this, we’re wearing great ensembles while at the same time presenting to great ensembles.”
For the award for best ensemble in a comedy series, Sorvino and Kudrow were present. The two actors were cast in the movie “Romy and Michele” as two unsuccessful 28-year-olds who create false occupations to dazzle their old classmates at their high school reunion.
