Dylan Minnette, known for his role on Netflix‘s “13 Reasons Why,” has revealed he’s taking an indefinite break from acting to pursue his passion for music with his band Wallows.
In a recent interview on the Zach Sang Show, Minnette opened up about his decision to step away from the spotlight. While acknowledging the success he’s found in acting, particularly with “13 Reasons Why,” he expressed a growing feeling of disconnection.
“I was fortunate to find success in [acting],” Minnette said. “… But it also started to feel like a bit of a job. It was always fun for me, always really inspiring, but then it was just starting to feel like just a job.”
Minnette emphasized the importance of music in his life. His band, Wallows, represents a shared dream that they’re dedicated to pursuing at the highest level.
“I feel like I’m in a position now where I can just kind of like do that for a while and get this the farthest it can be,” he continued. “[Success]… the only way that’s gonna happen is if I put in my 100% time and energy into it and take it very seriously and show the world that we all take this very seriously.”
Focusing on music feels natural and inspiring for Minnette. While enjoying his current path, he hasn’t ruled out a return to acting someday. He even mentioned discussing a return with his team, but timing wasn’t on his side due to the recent actors’ strike.
This break has allowed Minnette to rediscover his creative spark. “I do feel like I have something to give, and that’s probably acting … I feel like I’m starting to feel inspiration for that again,” he shared. He envisions returning when both he and Wallows are ready to take a break from their respective pursuits.
After captivating audiences in “13 Reasons Why,” Minnette continued to impress with roles in the 2022 films “Scream” and the Hulu miniseries “The Dropout.” Now, he embarks on a new chapter, focusing on his musical passion. While fans might miss him on screen for a while, there’s no doubt his dedication will pay off, both in music and in his eventual return to acting.
