Japanese Mom Was Told To ‘Speak English’ In America, Her Response Had The Racist Woman Running For Cover

Some encounters with racism can be so absurd that they almost feel like a scene from a movie. That’s exactly how one woman’s mom remembers her run-in with an entitled stranger in the late 1980s. As a Japanese immigrant, she and her friend were simply chatting in Japanese while waiting to be seated at a restaurant when a woman approached them, demanding they speak English.

Instead of letting the confrontation escalate, they decided to flip the script and respond in the most unexpected way by using posh British accents to mock the woman. What followed was a perfect mix of humor and justice, leaving the racist stranger to walk away defeated and embarrassed.

A Japanese immigrant and her friend were confronted by a woman demanding they “speak English” in a Los Angeles restaurant

'Tell my mom to speak English? Okay!?'

This is a story that was recently brought up again by my mom when she was recounting some really s__tty racism

she encountered when she first came to the United States. I've heard this story a few times before but didn't think to share it anywhere else.

That is, until I was made aware of this subreddit. Enjoy.

It was the late 1980s in Los Angeles, California. By this time my mom, a Japanese immigrant, had been living in the United States for ten years.

Although she could speak English well, she wasn’t fluent and preferred to speak Japanese with others from the local Japanese-American community.

One day, she and a friend were waiting to be seated at a restaurant on Beverly Boulevard.

As they chattered away in Japanese, a large shadow cast down upon them.

Looking up, they found Karen’s 1989 counterpart leering down at them.

Mom couldn’t remember how the woman looked except for the look of pure contempt trying to work its way across facial muscles frozen by Botox.

“You two,” Karen barked, “this is America! Speak English.”

Startled, my mom and her friend made eye contact, unsure of what to do.

Encounters like this were, sadly, ones they had run into many times since they came to live in the USA.

They were not ones for confrontation. Before, they couldn’t do anything while their bullies marched off, unpunished.

But then, as they made eye contact, a brilliant thing happened.

Mom likened the moment to their thought processes coming in sync together.

They had a shared idea that didn’t need any further elaboration or explanation.

“Masami, my dear, I do think the waiter ought to have shown up to escort us to our table by now,”

Mom chimed in the poshest British accent she could muster.

“It’s frightfully rude to keep us waiting like this!”

“Yes, darling,” her friend replied, invoking her best impersonation of the Princess of Wales, “it is frightfully rude indeed!”

As they continued to twitter away in their fake English accents, Karen began to slowly back away.

Her Botox face reddened and twisted itself in a visage as h__eous as the Furies.

Realizing that she had just been outsmarted by two young women obsessed with British culture and celebrity,

all she could do was storm off down Beverly Boulevard, a defeated bully.

While there was no direct punishment, it was a story that my mom would continue to retell thirty years later.

It has always made me chuckle to myself, and I hope you enjoyed it too.

Edit: So there was a massive error on my part. What I thought was Botox paralyzing Karen 1989's facial muscles would have most likely been a botched face lift.

For some reason, when I first heard my mom's story, I just immediately thought her face was that way due to a bad Botox injection.

And holy s__t this post blew up. I thought this was going to get buried. Thank you everyone for your comments and awards.

But seriously, if you have money to burn please use your funds for a worthy cause.

This edit is coming in too late, but in the future, even a small donation to organisations working to stop Asian hate crimes goes a long way. Thank you.

Although the poster’s mother was used to encountering rude behavior as an immigrant in the United States, she found an unexpected way to respond to a racist encounter in a restaurant.

The story takes place in the late 1980s in Los Angeles, where the poster’s mother, a Japanese immigrant, and her friend were chatting in Japanese while waiting to be seated at a restaurant.

This was a familiar situation for them as non-native speakers of English; they often received unwarranted and rude remarks from strangers. In this case, a woman (the “Karen” of the story) interrupted them, telling them to “speak English” because “this is America.”

Rather than letting the insult slide as they had in the past, the two women shared a silent, synchronized moment of defiance. Instead of responding in anger, they opted to mock the woman’s demand in the most unexpected way by switching to exaggerated British accents and acting like they were high-society patrons complaining about the delay in their service.

The “Karen” was stunned and slowly backed away, unable to respond to the clever, humorous retort. The two women had turned the moment around, turning the tables on the bully without escalating the confrontation.

This story highlights the emotional strength and quick thinking it takes to defuse a racially charged situation. Instead of responding to bigotry with anger or submission, the women used humor and wit to challenge the rude behavior in a way that left the bully with no choice but to retreat. This isn’t just a story of standing up to racism; it’s a story of reclaiming power in a way that defies expectations.

Humor, in this case, was not only a defense mechanism but a strategic response that left the aggressor powerless. As psychologist Dr. Neal Norrick, an expert in humor, explains, “Humor is often a means of social negotiation, signaling dominance or establishing a rapport in situations of conflict”.

The women in this story used humor to flip the power dynamic, turning a humiliating moment for them into one of victory.

So, when faced with a hostile or racist situation, is humor a more effective tool for challenging ignorance than anger or confrontation?

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors enjoyed the idea of flipping the script on bullies by weirding them out or calling out their ignorance, while also subtly pointing out the irony of their behavior

LMGooglyTFY − The great tactic of just weirding your bullies out.

Engine_engineer − I like the irony your mother slapped in Karen’s face: English is not American.

hmischuk − I have groups of friends who speak Spanish and groups of friends who speak Arabic.

I sometimes remind them when they are conversing in their first languages, "Guys, this is America: speak Navajo! "

This group highlighted the hypocrisy of demanding English in a country built on immigration, often from people who don’t bother to learn other languages themselves

hymie0 − “You two,” Karen barked, “this is America! Speak English.” "So, as I was saying, that b__ch in the red shirt?

Can you believe she thinks she's thin enough to wear a shirt like that? And that hair color? Remind me to stay away from whatever brand she's using."

flyrun − After thirty years, the story still holds up! If it was the 80s, she must've been an obatarian. ;-p

The sad thing is that these idiots are the same ones who don't bother to learn even the most basic phrases if/when they travel...

while also complaining when the natives/residents don't speak English. SMH

Even-Tomatillo-4197 − America: the stolen land where literally everyone is an immigrant but they get mad when you’re not the right type of immigrant

These commenters enjoyed the humor in language confrontations, with some sharing personal experiences of being corrected or encountering others’ misguided beliefs about language

snakebill − Speak English!!! In a place called “ Los Angeles“.

maximumhippo − Language stories are always my favorites. They always have such cathartic ends.

TattieMafia − I'm a Scottish person, I have had Americans try to correct my English to American English,

so I replied to them in a Glaswegian accent and they accused me of inventing a new language.

Their exact words were "That's not a real language." I said, "Glaswegians have been speaking English longer than you, pal." in a Glaswegian accent.

These Redditors expressed frustration at those who demand others speak English, offering sarcastic or practical insights, and celebrating the ability to switch between languages freely

[Reddit User] − Maybe it's the troll in me, but I would have busted out the loudest "'Ello Govn-uh!!!!" Cockney English accent.

Myfourcats1 − I never understand people who yell at others to speak English. Why?

So you can eavesdrop on their conversation? They aren’t talking to you. Mind your business.

nogami − Great story! My daughter goes to a Japanese immersion school (she’s Canadian).

She can effortlessly switch between English and Japanese right now. So cool to watch.

She just uses whichever language she wants without any work. Wish I could do it half as easily.

Kids’ minds are amazing. Everyone should have the benefit of a second language.

This user reinforced the idea of freedom of speech, suggesting that people should feel free to speak whatever language they choose

joeshill − I have always had the attitude that in America, we have freedom of speech, and no official language.

Therefore, we can tell Karen what to do with herself in whatever language we choose.

Was the British bait brilliant or borderline? Would you prep a posh persona, or pivot to pirate? How do you dialect-defend dignity? Crown your comebacks below, we’re toasting the triumph!
