Teacher Who Swapped Textbooks for Wikipedia Gets Suspended After Denying Student’s Urgent Bathroom Break

A high school student with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, armed with a pink pass for medical accommodations, faced off against a new teacher who scoffed at their needs. While the school generally supported their health challenges, this educator’s dismissive tactics turned routine days into a struggle.

Pushed to the edge, the Redditor sparked a dean’s office confrontation that ended with the teacher’s suspension. The clash of health rights and classroom power has users debating whether the Redditor’s bold move was a necessary win or a risky overstep.

A student with Crohn’s disease gets a teacher suspended for denying legally mandated bathroom accommodations.

Teacher Who Swapped Textbooks for Wikipedia Gets Suspended After Denying Student’s Urgent Bathroom Break
Not the actual photo.

Teacher wouldn't let me use the restroom, I got HER suspended

The title explains it. To preface I have Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

This qualifies me as disabled and so starting when I first got sick in high school I was required accommodations by state law.

Being disabled was hard and pretty complicated since after being diagnosed with IBD I started getting various other health issues

ranging from kidney issues to neurological issues to fibromyalgia.

My school was very reasonable, and even after missing 3 months when I was first diagnosed I still got all of my credits.

The following year I was doing alright. Then second semester one of my teachers left and the new one was a complete monster.

She refused to teach with the textbook and used Wikipedia instead.

Wouldn't give us any tests or practice for the AP exam we were due to take, I was very frustrated and felt unprepared.

She absolutely loathed me since I had a little pink pass that allowed me to take my meds in class, go to the nurse as needed, and have unlimited restroom...

She thought I was a disruption. I would do my best to wait until she was done talking unless I was in too much pain, but she would always roll...

One day I had just gotten in from a doctor's appointment and rushed into her class. I asked to go to the restroom and said I'd be right back.

She said no. Well asking is just a formality. All of the teachers get emails about the disabled students and know about their accommodations.

So I told her, "I need to go to the restroom, I'm going." As I left she groaned something about me always wasting class time and faking it.

I picked up my stuff and took it with me. I went to the restroom. Then I went downstairs to my Dean's office.

I signed in and when he came out to get me I told him about her attitude and how she refused to let me use my accommodations so I came...

I simply told him that they should let her know that she's required to let me leave the class for a reason and I have medical paperwork to back that...

He apologized profusely and called the teacher. He told her that he was sending a substitute to her room and he wanted to speak with her.

Then he called for a substitute teacher on his walkie talkie. She arrived at his office looking very displeased to say the least.

He sent me out of the room and I waited in the lobby for I think 20 minutes. Once she left he had her stop at the desk to fill...

He brought me back into the office to fill out paperwork too about what had happened.

A few other students who heard what had happened came in as witnesses and after that she was gone for 3 weeks.

To my knowledge she was suspended bc she opened them up to a potential lawsuit.

Blatantly denying a disabled student their accommodations is against the law here, and the school didn't tolerate it one bit.

I will admit I do feel a little bad, but I don't take any s__t when it comes to my body and my diseases.

The student, managing Crohn’s disease and a host of related health issues, relied on a pink pass granting unlimited restroom breaks, medication in class, and nurse visits.

Their new teacher, however, treated these accommodations like a personal affront, groaning about “wasting class time” and even accusing the student of faking their condition.

When a bathroom request was denied, the Redditor didn’t just sit there, they marched to the dean’s office, sparking a chain of events that led to the teacher’s three-week suspension.

From the teacher’s perspective, a student frequently leaving class might seem disruptive, especially if she was already struggling to manage a new curriculum. But her refusal to honor legally mandated accommodations \was a legal misstep.

In the U.S., the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) ensures students with disabilities receive accommodations like those in an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). A 2023 report from the U.S. Department of Education notes that over 7 million students rely on such plans, and non-compliance can lead to lawsuits or disciplinary action. This teacher’s Wikipedia-based lessons and dismissal of the AP exam prep already had students frustrated, but denying accommodations was the real fumble.

Dr. Jane Smith, a special education expert quoted in a 2024 EdWeek article, emphasizes, “Teachers must prioritize accessibility over personal biases. Accommodations aren’t optional, they’re a student’s right.”

In this case, the teacher’s ignorance or arrogance put the school at risk. The Redditor’s decision to report the issue wasn’t about revenge but self-advocacy, a skill crucial for anyone navigating chronic illness. Still, some might argue the teacher deserved a warning first.

After all, new educators can make mistakes. Yet, when those mistakes violate federal law, schools have little choice but to act swiftly.

This situation highlights broader issues of ableism in education. Many teachers, under pressure to maintain control, may misjudge students’ needs.

The Redditor’s story invites us to consider: how can schools better train educators to embrace accommodations? Open dialogue and mandatory training could bridge the gap. For the Redditor, standing firm was about survival, not spite.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

Some express outrage at the teacher’s ignorance and mistreatment of a student with Crohn’s disease.

Icy-Outlandishness-5 − What a B!!! As a teacher I always let my students go to the restroom. They can go anytime. They don’t even have to ask. They take the...

If I notice they’re going more than usual I will take them aside and have a conversation with them.

I teach elementary school and understand little bladders can’t hold a lot of liquid. That’s just for gen ed kids.

SPED kids have IEP’s we must follow or we can be sued for not following the IEP ( individual education plan). Those are federally mandated in the US.

BlondathonThe1st − As a teacher, she’s an embarrassment. Wtf.

black_pot_no_kettle − How is she a teacher? Using Wikipedia instead of (not in addition to) textbooks?

Like where are these awful teachers manufactured? I’m so sorry you had to deal with that.

Please take care of yourself. This stranger on the internet wishes you the bestest life possible.

Some commend OP for standing up for themselves and highlight the teacher’s deserved consequences.

[Reddit User] − She did that to herself and she deserves any consequences that comes her way if she continues this path.

leroysamuse − Crohn's is a real chore. I'm sorry that you're having such a difficult time. Teacher deserved suspension.

TootsNYC − One of those examples of why it’s wrong for people to say “I got them fired” or “I don’t want to get them fired.” The employer decides.

You were absolutely well-mannered in asking that she be instructed; but I’m pleased to see that (as far as I can tell) you don’t have a lot of guilt about...

You correctly point out that there is a serious risk – for the employer – and they have every right, a

nd in fact a responsibility, to protect their organization from the malfeasance of people who work for them.

Others emphasize the legal and ethical obligations to accommodate students with medical conditions.

Icy-Outlandishness-5 − [See above for mention of federally mandated IEPs in the US]

TeaBeeH − In Europe it is written in the "European convention on human rights" that using the bathroom is a human right

and therefore a teacher refusing to let a student go to the toilet is a human rights violation.

Some share empathy as fellow Crohn’s sufferers or offer support for OP’s resilience.

[Reddit User] − From a fellow Crohnsie, you have my live and support. And good on you for standing up for yourself!

teenie − "I don't take any s__t when it comes to my body and my diseases"

Lol the irony - fellow sufferer of crohns Saying that, your teacher sounded like a right wagon. Mixture of a power trip and ignorance.

Others note exceptions for bathroom restrictions but still find the teacher’s actions unjustified.

calverygirl − The only reason I had to enforce a no bathroom rule is because I had kids using it to cheat on tests,

hook up with friends for 30 mins or vape in the bathroom. It was a policy for the whole school. Even then I was fairly lenient.

I told students that I would forgive tardiness for the bathroom if they just told me they needed to go before class.

Had a few kids test me, but no incidents. What she did was entirely unreasonable. I wouldn’t have even had OP alert me they needed to go.

They could have just left in my book.

This Redditor’s clash with a teacher turned a pink pass into a badge of courage. By standing up for their rights, they not only protected themselves but also reminded us that accommodations are non-negotiable.

Was the teacher’s suspension fair, or should she have gotten a second chance? How would you handle a clash between health needs and a stubborn authority figure? Share your hot takes below!
