New photos offer a sneak peek at Here, the upcoming drama from Robert Zemeckis featuring de-aged versions of Tom Hanks and Robin Wright.

Here chronicles the lives of multiple families who inhabit the same house over several decades. The story unfolds entirely from the perspective of this single location, witnessing the joys, sorrows, and milestones that unfold within its walls. Directed by Zemeckis, Here reunites him with Hanks, their most notable collaboration being the 1994 masterpiece Forrest Gump. Wright joins the cast, adding another layer to this intriguing project.

The film utilizes de-aging technology to portray Hanks and Wright at various ages throughout the narrative. The released images showcase scenes depicting a Christmas celebration, a wedding, and a birthday celebration. While these glimpses offer a promising sign for the visual effects, some skepticism lingers. De-aging technology has yet to achieve complete mastery in Hollywood.

Recent attempts, like the de-aged Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, resulted in mixed reactions. There’s a concern that even if the faces appear convincingly youthful, subtle giveaways like voices and body language might betray the actors’ true ages, disrupting the illusion.

Here faces the challenge of ensuring the de-aging effects are seamless, preventing the audience from being pulled out of the narrative by focusing on the technology rather than the actors’ performances. This was an issue for both Indiana Jones and Martin Scorsese‘s The Irishman.

While director George Miller opted against de-aging for his recent film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, citing audience distraction by the technology, Zemeckis and Hanks have a successful track record of collaboration. If Here can overcome the de-aging hurdle, it could pave the way for more effective use of this technology in future films.

The first look at Here is intriguing. The reunion of Zemeckis, Hanks, and Wright is a cause for excitement, and the concept of a multi-generational family saga holds immense potential. The success of the de-aging effects will be a crucial factor, but with a talented team behind the camera, Here remains a highly anticipated film.
