Wife Cheats After Decades Together, Now She Can’t Believe Her Husband Moved On Without Her

in Social Issues

When a person makes a life-changing decision, they often believe they are moving toward something better.

But sometimes, the reality waiting on the other side is completely different from what they imagined.

The hardest part can be watching the consequences affect not only the person who left, but everyone around them.

In this story, a man’s wife ended their decades-long marriage after falling for someone she met at work.

Her choice deeply affected their children and changed the entire family dynamic.

Later, when her new relationship fell apart, she tried reaching back out to the people she had left behind.

OP was no longer the same person who begged her to stay, and his response has sparked a debate online. Keep reading to see whether Reddit supported him or thought he had gone too far.

A man struggles with his ex-wife’s betrayal years after she left their family for another relationship

not the actual photo

'I’m so happy that my ex wife is miserable?'

Three years ago I(48 m) found out my wife (46 f) was having an affair. She

met a guy at work and came home one day telling me she was in love with

him, no longer loved me and wanted a divorce. This was a guy she’d only

known for three months at the time. She and I had been together since we

were in our 20’s. We have three kids 28m, 26m and 23 f.

Well I tried to fight for my marriage and didn’t want a divorce but she

simply would not stop seeing this guy. After one weekend where she

disappeared from Friday afternoon to Sunday night I ended up throwing

her out of the house. She immediately moved in with this guy. The only

excuse she ever gave me was “I never wanted to hurt you, but there’s just

something about this guy.” And “I deserve to be happy.” That was it. That

was the depth of her reasoning for throwing everything we built together away.

We ended up finalizing our divorce in early 2022. Although I had very hard

feelings toward her I faked it enough to get pretty favorable divorce terms

from her. It seemed she was so eager to be with her dream man that she

didn’t have time for a long divorce. So in the end I got to keep my pension

and the house (which I had bought from my grandmother). I did have to give her half of my 401k however.

The effect on our kids was pretty devastating. All three of them took it very

hard. My oldest son told her that if she chose this man he’d never have a

relationship with her again. As of right now neither of our sons has a

relationship with their mother. Our daughter does talk to her from time to

time but their relationship is very strained to say the least. My daughter is a

very kind person and she tries but she usually ends her conversations with

her mother even more upset than when they started.

About four months after the divorce my ex contacted me out of the blue.

She told me she had made a terrible mistake and asked if she could come

home. He dream man turned out to be an a__oholic who she says is verbally

abusive and wasted all of her money. I used this opportunity to tell her

exactly what I thought of her as a person, a wife and a mother. I told her

this was her life now and to deal with it. I told her she no longer had a

home at this house and to never contact me again.

Then a few things happened over the last year that have driven her to start

trying to contact me again. First off I met someone. My sister introduced

me to a friend of hers who is also divorced and she and I hit it off. We’ve

been seeing each other since last summer and while we’ve agreed that

neither of us wants to get married again, we are together.

Once my ex heard about this she once again tried to contact me but I

ignored her. My son also got married and didn’t invite his mother. She again

contacted me to try to get me to intervene on her behalf. I told her I would

talk to him but I never did. Secretly I feel like she deserves all the pain she’s

feeling when it comes to our kids. She destroyed our family without so

much as an afterthought. Too bad, so sad.

Now she recently told our daughter that she finally broke it off with the

dream man because she could take his drinking and total lack of

responsibility. He wasted her half of the 401k that I had to give her. He also

totaled her car driving drunk. This from a man in his 40’s. Again she knew

this guy for three months and torpedoed our whole family for him.

On the face of it I act like I feel sorry for her but inside I really delight in the

fact that she’s so unhappy. Call me evil or whatever I don’t care. She

brought this on herself and it serves her right. I actually had to sit there

one Saturday night while she got ready for a date with this guy and

laughed on the phone with her friend about how awkward our living

situation was. I lived in hell for over a year because of her.

Wait until she finds out our son and his wife are going to have a baby later

this year. Maybe if she had been able to keep her legs closed she’d get to

meet her grandchild. Enjoy your s__tty one bedroom apartment and your

broken down used car. Me and my new partner will think of you when we’re

on vacation in Hawaii this summer. Hawaii was the trip my ex and I always

planned to take once our daughter finished college. Maybe I’ll send her

pictures.. TL;DR: my ex cheated on me and now she’s miserable and I’m overjoyed.

Many people believe forgiveness is the natural ending after being hurt, but deep betrayal often leaves behind emotions that are far more complicated.

When someone loses a marriage, family stability, and years of shared memories because of another person’s choices, anger can become a way of making sense of what happened.

Sometimes the hardest part is not losing the relationship itself, but watching the person who caused the damage appear to move on without consequences.

In this situation, the OP’s pain seems to come from much more than the affair. He spent decades building a life with his wife, only to feel replaced by someone she had known for a short time.

Her explanation that she “deserved to be happy” likely intensified the wound because it framed a life-changing decision around her own feelings while ignoring the impact on her husband and children.

The anger he expresses now appears connected to years of feeling abandoned, humiliated, and powerless while his family struggled with the aftermath.

A different perspective is that OP’s satisfaction over his ex-wife’s struggles may not come from cruelty alone.

It may represent a desire for fairness after experiencing what felt like a deeply unfair situation.

When someone causes significant harm and seems to escape the consequences, people often experience a psychological need to see balance restored.

However, there is also a risk that staying emotionally attached to someone through resentment can keep that person connected to your life long after the relationship has ended.

His children’s strained relationship with their mother, the financial consequences, and the collapse of a decades-long marriage were serious outcomes.

His ex-wife made choices, and those choices affected more than just the two people in the marriage.

At the same time, continuing to measure his happiness against her suffering could prevent him from fully enjoying the new chapter he has created.

The most meaningful form of moving forward is often not seeing someone else lose, but reaching a point where their losses no longer determine your emotions.

OP has rebuilt parts of his life, found companionship, and created new experiences.

The question is whether he wants his future to be defined by the happiness he has gained or by the punishment he believes his ex deserves.

Sometimes the strongest response to betrayal is not watching someone fall. It is realizing you no longer need to look back to know you survived.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These Redditors celebrated OP moving forward, believing living well is the best response to betrayal

GentleComposure − Unless you've been there, it is impossible to

understand the mindf\*ck that is an exit affair. Seeing the natural

consequences come to fruition must be something. I hope Hawaii is amazing!

Thepatrone36 − best revenge is living well.

DrAsthma − Post the f__k outta those vacation pictures. Try and get the

local paper to cover your trip. (I legit live in a town small enough that this could definitely happen)

unconfirmedpanda − Schandefreude at its finest. It's only been a year since

the divorce, so it's probably healthy to express these emotions, but don't

be afraid to talk to a counselor if you feel like the resentment and hate are

getting too much. The very best revenge is living well.

Positivemindsetbuddy − Eventually, this won't even matter to you

anymore. It'll be a blip in history a few years from now, because you aren't

the one who imploded your marriage, you know? You fought for it, and

although it didn't work out, at least you're still standing, and were able to

lean on some people who've helped keep you going.

In a sense the pain is still fresh from last year, but good on you for picking

yourself and your kids up, and trying to move forward together with what

pieces you have left that weren't completely fragmented. This loss is hers

and hers alone to bear OP. These are all her own "what if's" to dwell on.

Tiny_Mobile_9056 − I couldn’t be happier for you! As you ride off into the

sunset, try your best to let go of the negativity… for YOUR sake! Glad you

are getting to see the pain she inflicted on herself. I’m sorry her pain will

never fix the pain she inflicted on you and your children! Enjoy your blessings!

MrSlabBulkhead − Live your best life, man.

These commenters argued the ex made deliberate choices, not mistakes, and deserved the consequences

yggdrasillx − Your ex didn't make a mistake. She consciously made a choice.

What she meant was that she regrets her CHOICE didn't plan out the way

she wanted it. You might have found forgiveness in your heart, but you'd

be a terrible person to not feel absolute vitriol for someone who

intentionally hurt your children. She got more than she deserved I'm every aspect.

Be happy you are able to live and love again, but never forget the hurt She caused her own flesh and blood.

a-_rose − She didn’t make a mistake. She knew the consequences of her

actions yet continued on and had the audacity take half your 401k. She

made her bed now she can lay in it. I don’t think you’re cruel at all. Block

her and continue on with your life. Your children are all adults you don’t

have to coparent or communicate with each other anymore.

Don’t let her ruin anymore of your life.

readingbabe − No post history. . seems sus. A nicely written essay though!

These users shared similar cheating experiences, describing how selfish choices often led to unhappy outcomes

flamingopatronum − I had a similar situation with my ex, but she didn't try

to come back, thank god. I was in paramedic school and working full time +

a ton of overtime to support us bc her job didn't pay well and she

destroyed my credit, so I was in a ton of credit card debt.

She decided that I wasn't home enough to keep her entertained or to have

s__ with her whenever she wanted it, so she found it elsewhere. I had

introduced her to a friend/coworker of mine previously, and you could feel

them eye-f__king each other from across the room whenever we were all together.

Funny thing, she ended up sleeping with some dude she was in school with.

Funny, because she was a lesbian and swore up, down, left, and right that

she'd never sleep with a man because it was such a repulsive thought.

I was finally home for an entire night at one point and just wanted to relax

and spend the night with her bc I'd been working and going to school so

much, but she woke me up while we were sleeping to tell me that her

"friend" was so sad because of the death of a friend and decided to go over to his house.

She insisted that it was going to be her and a group of their classmates,

and what was I going to do, tell her no? That she couldn't go help a grieving

friend? I let her go. She slept with him that night. No condom, no second thought about me or our marriage.

When she finally told me, I kicked her out for a few days. I let her come

back because she was bent on trying to work things out, and I wasn't in a good place, mentally, so I let her back in.

We were together for maybe 3 or 4 days before she begged me to open

our marriage so she could sleep with the friend I introduced her to, and

decided to ask for a divorce because she could be happy with me, but not only me. I said no, and that was that.

I found out through mutual friends that she moved in immediately with

that person and that person's gf (they were poly). It sounds like my ex

weaseled her way into their relationship and pushed the other gf out, so

she had that person all to herself. Word is, their relationship was terrible

and they broke up after like 6 months and she was miserable.

I was so happy.

muttonbarley − My ex cheated on me and married the guy she cheated

with. They got pregnant together, but he left her nearly on the day that kid

was born. Because lo and behold, he was cheating on her the whole time.

So she ended up with another guy who she's still with afaik.

He's a long term partner with the emotional maturity of a flea, because

"he's a good father to In retrospect, I could never have had this with my ex,

it's not who she was. Her life didn't achieve quite the level of disaster that

OP's ex did, but there's a special satisfaction there, for sure.

After losing a decades-long marriage, the poster was left carrying the pain of betrayal while watching his ex-wife face the consequences of her choices.

His anger and satisfaction are understandable after everything he endured, but healing after deep hurt can be complicated when resentment remains.

Some readers may feel he earned the right to move on, while others may question whether holding onto bitterness keeps him tied to the past.

Do you think the OP’s reaction is justified, or has revenge become part of his recovery? Share your thoughts below.
