Woman Lets Friend Use Her Apartment Once Then Discovers She’s Been Bringing Exes There for Months

Helping a friend during a difficult situation can feel natural, especially when you understand why they need support.

However, a temporary favor can become a serious problem when someone starts making decisions that affect your own safety without asking first.

The original poster (OP) once allowed her best friend to use her apartment for a difficult breakup because she wanted to help her feel secure.

What she did not expect was that this one-time favor would quietly turn into a repeated habit involving multiple strangers knowing her address.

Now, OP is questioning whether she was right to set a boundary or whether she failed to understand her friend’s fears.

Scroll down to see how Reddit reacted to this complicated friendship situation.

'My best friend has been using my apartment to break up with men and I only found out because one came back?'

My best friend and I are both on our late 20s. A couple years ago she had a

guy get really weird after she ended things with him and he kept showing

up at her building, so ever since then she's been extremely careful about men knowing exactly where she lives.

Last year I let her use my apartment once to break things off with someone

because I live in a building with cameras and a front desk, and I was going

to be out anyway. I thought it was a one time thing. Apparently she did not.

A few nights ago someone buzzed my apartment and asked if she was

there. I had no idea who he was. He said she had broken up with him at my

place a few weeks earlier and he'd left a charger behind.

After talking to her I found out she's done this FOUR times. Different guys.

She tells them she's inviting them over to talk, uses my apartment while I'm

at work, then leaves after them. At least two of these guys apparently thought she actually lived here.

I was furious and changed the door code. I spent most of last year saving

money so I could finally afford my own place and the idea of random men

now associating my address with her makes me really uncomfortable.

She thinks I'm overreacting because she only does it when she knows I'm

gone, never touches my stuff, and says my building is basically the safest

possible place for her to have these conversations. She also reminded me

that I was the one who offered my apartment the first time.

I told her offering once wasn't permission forever.

Now she's saying I know why she doesn't want guys knowing her real

address and I'm basically taking away the one place where she felt safe doing this.

I understand why she's cautious considering what happened before, but I

also feel like somehow her safety plan became me unknowingly giving strangers my address.

Would you be mad about this or am I making it bigger than it is?

Fear can make people create survival strategies, especially after experiencing something that made them feel unsafe.

At the same time, safety decisions become complicated when they involve another person’s home, privacy, and sense of security.

A boundary that protects one person can unintentionally place another person in a vulnerable position if it is made without their agreement.

In this situation, the OP was not upset because her friend wanted a safe place to have difficult conversations.

She was upset because a one-time favor quietly became a repeated arrangement without her knowledge.

The emotional conflict is not simply about an apartment or a door code. It is about trust.

OP believed she was helping her friend through a difficult moment, but later discovered that her home had become part of a pattern involving multiple strangers who were never introduced or approved.

Meanwhile, the friend was operating from a place of fear and trying to prevent another frightening experience from happening.

A different perspective is that the friend’s behavior may have started as a protective response but gradually crossed into avoiding responsibility for the consequences.

After someone experiences stalking or unwanted attention, it is understandable that they may become hypervigilant and search for environments that feel controlled.

However, safety plans usually work best when they involve consent, communication, and shared boundaries.

OP’s friend may have focused so strongly on preventing harm to herself that she overlooked the fact that she was transferring some of that risk onto someone else.

Her friend’s fear may be completely understandable, especially given her past experience, but understanding the reason behind a behavior does not remove the need for boundaries.

OP changing the door code was not necessarily a rejection of her friend’s safety concerns.

It was a way of restoring control over her own home after discovering that important information had been kept from her.

The situation also shows why trust is essential in friendships.

Helping someone through a difficult period requires compassion, but compassion cannot depend on one person silently accepting risks they never agreed to take.

A healthier solution would involve the friend finding safety measures that do not rely on someone else’s private space without permission.

Ultimately, both people’s feelings can exist at the same time. The friend’s fear deserves empathy, and OP’s discomfort deserves respect.

A safe friendship is not built by one person carrying all the responsibility. It is built when both people feel protected, informed, and valued.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These Redditors criticized the friend for risking OP’s safety instead of choosing public breakup locations

Both-Enthusiasm708 − How long were they at your apartment where one guy had to use his charger?

dck133 − So she never takes her dates home? Except for when she breaks

up with them… then she takes them to your place instead of a public place?

Just-Like-My-Opinion − You are not overreacting at all! She's basically been

breaking into your place while you are away. That's a major violation. She

can do her dumping by text, if she doesn't feel safe, or just go to a public

place, like everyone else does. I think I'd be done with the friendship after this, TBH

Dame_Niafer − She's just fine with throwing you under the bus for a

vindictive ex to find. Without even warning you. Some friend.

No-Requirement-2420 − So she is scared of them knowing where she lives

but is ok with them knowing where you live? Make that make sense?

kknuepp21 − So instead of dealing with her problems by herself, she’s putting you in danger. .????!!!!. That’s not a friend.

This group suggested safer alternatives like coffee shops, police stations, or public places with cameras

chotskyIdontknowwhy − Tell her to break up with them at a coffee shop -

cameras AND people. Edit to add: Her safety doesn’t trump yours.

Primary-Property8303 − Tell her to do the breaking up in the parking lot of the police department. Cameras for days

Kanobii − Why doesn’t she break up with them in a public place with people

around? Doing it at your place is WILD and dangerous for you.

These commenters agreed the friend’s safety concerns were valid but said they should not endanger OP

Alternative-Being181 − It's reasonable to be upset - she's acting entitled to

your place. She has a valid need to be safe, but it sounds like it puts the risk

of an irate/stalker ex onto you. I would suggest she use a public park or something in the future.

Professional_Cat_284 − Absolutely would be upset/mad and you’re not

overreacting. She quite literally proved your point when men were

COMING BACK after the break up. Also did you guys even discuss her

coming to and from your apartment when you feel like it to begin with? ? That’s a huge i__asion of privacy imo.

Someone else said it but I have to agree, she can do a break up in public,

not at your place. Also what is she telling these men that she lives where

you live? ? Has she not been inviting them to her place at all during the relationship?

yzfox − So she has concerns about her safety, but doesn't give a fig about yours? Are you sure she is your friend?

The situation started with one friend trying to create a safe way to handle

uncomfortable breakups, but it slowly turned into a boundary being crossed without permission.

The poster clearly understands why her friend is cautious, yet safety cannot come at the cost of making someone else feel unsafe in their own home.

Some people may see the apartment as a reasonable solution, while others may feel the trust was broken the moment it became a repeated habit.

Was the OP right to change the door code, or should she have handled it differently? Share your thoughts below.
