Employer Demands Proof For Worker’s Flu Absence, Frustrated Doctor Sends Out Brutal Note

A worker’s flu struck hard post-holidays, leaving him voiceless and drained in bed. He notified work about the illness, but on day four, the company insisted on a doctor’s note, treating him like a child needing permission to miss school.

His reliable physician flipped the script with a direct emailed note excusing the time off. It confirmed the grown man had the flu, needed recovery without extra hurdles, and slammed the policy as pointless bureaucracy. He skipped a costly copay while the blunt message highlighted widespread irritation over inflexible rules forcing unnecessary medical visits for common sicknesses.

A supportive doctor issued a blunt note excusing flu-related absence from work.

Employer Demands Proof For Worker's Flu Absence, Frustrated Doctor Sends Out Brutal Note
Not the actual photo.

'Need a doctors note for the flu...doctor delivers?'

It was about 2 months after my 1 year anniversary at my last job. I caught a n__ty flu around Christmas.

I called into about the flu. They wouldn't accept emails even though I couldn't speak. On the fourth day my work required a doctor's note.

I didn't want to spend the 100 dollar copay for a doctor to tell me rest and fluids.

Luckily I had a good general doctor. So when I called him he sent me a PDF I could forward.

It stated Greedence has the f__king flu. He needs time off to recover and will come back when he is healthy enough.

Greedence is not a grade schooler and should not need a doctor's note when he is sick.

My VP tried to call me on when I would be back but I kept directing her to the doctor note.

Getting called into the boss’s office over a few sick days is something that no patients asked for, especially when all you need is rest and hydration. However, that’s the case for Greedence, as they refer to themselves in this story.

This Redditor’s story shines a light on a common workplace hurdle: policies requiring doctor’s notes for brief illnesses, often forcing employees to drag themselves to appointments when they should be recovering at home. On one side, employers aim to curb potential abuse and ensure productivity. On the other, these rules can discourage people from taking needed time off, leading to longer recoveries or even spreading germs at work.

Doctors often find themselves in the middle, writing notes that provide little medical value while adding to their workload. For minor ailments like the flu, the standard advice is simple: stay home, rest, and avoid contact with others. Requiring a visit just for proof can unnecessarily strain everyone involved.

This ties into broader workplace health dynamics, where trust and flexibility play key roles. Many experts argue that self-declaration for short absences builds mutual respect, while overly strict rules can erode morale.

According to the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), doctors across Canada spend an estimated 1.5 million hours every year writing sick notes, equivalent to the time for six million patient visits. This administrative task pulls focus from patients who truly need care.

Dr. Joss Reimer, president of the Canadian Medical Association, stated, “Sick notes are not a health systems issue, they’re a human resources issue. We understand that organizations have policies in place to manage their human resources, but when 6.5 million Canadians don’t have access to a family doctor and patients wait far too long for specialty care, physicians need to focus their time caring for patients who need medical care. We need to be there for patients who need us when they need us.”

This viewpoint emphasizes how these demands inappropriately involve healthcare providers in employment matters, diverting their focus from medical priorities.

A balanced approach? Encourage open communication, offer paid sick days, and reserve notes for extended absences. This way, employees recover faster, workplaces stay healthier, and doctors can prioritize actual treatment.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

Some people praise doctors who write sarcastic or supportive notes criticizing sick note policies.

Catacombs3 − I like your doctor.

timtambiscu1ts − When I was off for a week with gastro my doctor said I had industrial diarrhoea

outtamywayigottapee − I’ve seen one before that said something like ‘xxx has a cold,

and wisely chose to stay home from ‘date’ to ‘date’ so he would not spread it around his workplace. I support this decision.

Unfortunately, you do not trust his testimony and as such he has been forced to attend my clinic,

which is filled with vulnerable members of the public, in order to procure proof. Please review this policy. ’

nighthawke75 − He sounds like my old Physician - Sicilian Italian, all the way.

Boy, you don't cross swords with him or he'd light you up with some of the spiciest profanity you ever heard.

He had zero tolerance for bureaucracies and would send some n__ty-grams for sick notes to the 'crats.

You knew they were from him, their fax machines would be smoking.

When the clinic got bought out, he left and went into taking care of the needy down south in Central America. I'll miss him.

HesitatedEye − I had a doctor like that he knew my mother and had worked with her various times over the years.

Anyway, when I was 15 I broke my jaw and have plates put in and have arthritis in what's left in my jaw and cheekbones

so there are times I can't talk or do anything other than take painkillers and sleep

which doesn't work well if you work in a call centre which I did at the time

so after 3 absences in a 6 month period they demand a doctors note which I get organised.

My doctor puts at the beginning "Hesitatedeye suffered a bilateral mandible fracture

which required maxillofacial surgery and severe tension on 4 different occasions in the last 5 years."

It was hilarious watching my boss, the HR lady and the witness for the company pull out a dictionary to translate it.

I knew what he had done and why he did it and just like OP's doctor, he was one of the good ones left at the time.

Some people share stories of rebellious or extreme ways to prove illness or bypass policies.

Buizel10 − Had a similar doctor back in primary school... my grandpa. He has a practice around here.

I went in. He was so mad about school wanting a doctor's note (pneumonia)

he excessively swore in the note and then called up the superintendent to complain.

Lucky lucky my teacher and Vice Principal got fired the next week.

Toadsted − Vomiting in the front office is my method of choice to get the word across, especially if it's projectile.

Plus, you got paid for that short transgression. Ironically, getting out of school takes way less effort than getting out of work. Maturity or something.

Some people criticize strict sick note policies and share frustrating experiences.

hope1es − Do you get sick pay at least with the note? Here in Germany you need a note on your third sick day,

sick pay kicks in then for up to 6 weeks and after that your health insurance pays most of your wage.

fireandlifeincarnate − My school doesn't even need a doctor's note. It's just "you say your kid's sick? Okay, we trust your judgement".

[Reddit User] − My work has a policy like that, if you don’t have any sick days to burn.

The kicker is that regardless of your sick days and what your doctor’s note says,

if you’re out for more than 3 days in a row, you have to go through the process of applying for FMLA leave.

I got the flu last year and only had 1 sick day left. I was out for a week with a doctors note...

I had to apply for FMLA leave, then short term disability, and got denied for it like 2 weeks after I had returned.

Like I understand that you don’t want guys pretending to be sick for a vacation and s__t, but the f__king doctor told you I have the flu,

and that’s not a disability. It’s an illness that happens to take more than 3 f__king days to get over.

Bonus bulls__t: we have to bring in an obituary if we miss work to grieve the death of a family member.

Controlled01 − All these people needing doctors notes to stay home when sick,

I had to get a doctor's note saying I was no longer sick/contagious before my boss would let me come back to work.

Some people highlight organized responses from doctors against sick note requirements.

[Reddit User] − Doctors of Nova Scotia came up with a pretty great letter for physicians to use:

“Request for medical/sick note: Letter to employer

Note: The below content can be cut and pasted, and modified to suit the individual physician.

Dear Employer,

One of your employees visited me to obtain a medical or sick note to satisfy your company’s absenteeism policy.

Employers with a sick note policy for missed time put an added burden on the health-care system.

People seeking sick notes – who otherwise wouldn’t see a doctor – end up in physicians’ offices, walk-in clinics and emergency department waiting rooms.

There, they may spread germs to pregnant women, frail elderly people, cancer patients and babies – all of whom are vulnerable to communicable diseases.

In most cases, the best remedy for a patient with an isolated illness (such as a gastrointestinal virus, influenza or a common cold) is to stay home, rest and drink...

Visiting a doctor’s office or an emergency room for a medical note does not support their recovery.

Sometimes, employees seek a sick note after they have recovered from their illness, so I have to issue a note based on trust.

Employees seeking sick notes reduce access for those patients who really need to see me,

and increase the three to four hours per day of paperwork that I do already. Both have a direct impact on patient care.

In addition, providing medical notes is a non-insured service, not funded by Medical Services Insurance.

I find it difficult to charge my patients for a requirement demanded by their employer.

If you continue to require a physician to authorize your employees’ absenteeism,

your employees must submit a written request from your organization for the medical note.

Upon providing the service I will invoice your company $_____ per medical note.

This is standard practice to fulfill non-medically necessary services for third-party organizations.

As Canadians we are lucky to have our health-care system, but citizens’ inability to access the system’s services in a timely fashion is a growing problem.

Health-care providers, business operators, governments and individuals must work together to ensure its sustainability.

I hope you will consider changing your current absenteeism policy to help reduce the unnecessary burden on our health-care system and improve access for all Nova Scotians.

Sincerely,

PHYSICIAN SIGNATURE”

Bam, peanut butter and jam!

This Redditor’s doctor didn’t just provide a note, they delivered a mic-drop moment that called out the absurdity of treating adults like kids during routine illnesses. It sparks a bigger question: Are strict doctor’s note policies helpful for managing absences, or do they add unnecessary stress and costs?

How would you handle juggling recovery with workplace demands, push for more flexibility or stick to the rules? Drop your thoughts and experiences in the comments!
