Wife Supports Unemployed Husband for Years, Then One Gaming Membership Demand Finally Breaks Her

in Social Issues

A marriage can survive many challenges, but it becomes much harder when one person feels like they are carrying the entire weight of the relationship alone.

Financial pressure, household responsibilities, and emotional exhaustion can slowly change how partners see each other.

The original poster (OP) has spent years supporting her husband while managing a demanding career as a nurse.

After her husband’s health issues affected his ability to work, she continued covering their expenses and helping him financially.

But when she refused to pay for another unnecessary purchase, his reaction left her questioning everything about their marriage. Read on to find out what OP decided to do next.

Wife supporting her disabled husband reaches her breaking point after years of carrying the finances and facing his angry outbursts

not the actual photo

'My husband yelled at me because I would not pay for a video game, so I kicked him out?'

I, 35 F, is married to "Frank", 40 M, for almost 16 years, Yes, I got married at the young age of 19.

Back story: I am the only one working as a LPN (nurse) and Frank has not

worked an ACTUAL job (like a W2 paying job) since we met in 2008. He

worked for under the table jobs until 2014 when he was diagnosed with

Cervical Stenosis. He has had surgery since then and does have chronic pain

and now have neuropathy (numbness in his arms). So yeah, I am the bread winner.

Here is the problem. He cannot get SSI benefits because he has not had a W2

paying job since 2007, so he has no income to show to the feds. I also make

too much and he has to put me down to apply. Before anyone says anything,

YES I KNOW I CAN GET A LAWYER. The lawyer is the one that mentioned the lack of income to show.

So, I have the only income in the house. I work full time at a nursing home and

I also do travel nursing on the side for quick money.

Frank sits on his ass all day and plays on his Playstation, chatting away with his

gamer friends that also are, what a friend calls, Freeloaders. My husband will

ask for money or games and I will pay for them. Here is the issue.

2 days ago, he wanted a membership for a game he rarely plays. I said no, why

should I pay $40 for a monthly membership he will pay for 2 weeks and quit for months.

Guys, this 40 year old man... threw a 5 year old temper tantrum! He yelled at

me, called me a f\\king b\\ch and told me to LEAVE!

I told him that I pay for everything, so he can leave. He left to go to mommy and daddy's.

Now, here is the issue. His mom, 60 F and dad 76 M, is treating me like I

should be burned at the stake. They said I pampered him all this time, why

stop?. I am debating to either sit and talk to Frank, or just end it all.

FYI, this is not his first temper tantrum. If I ask him to do ANY housework, he

calls me his favorite phrase "f\\king bi\\h" and ignores me.

I need advice. Talk to him and set boundaries; trial separation (I live in NC, so

we have to be legally separated for 1 yr before divorce) or proceed with the legal separation and divorce?

UPDATE: Yes, This is Bison (I forgot the password this account so I made a

new one, but I figured out the password)

First, thank you all for all the comments! I was in awe! Let me answer some common comments I seen:

Neuropathy is not CONSTANT! He can play games and when he gets

numbness, he sits his controller down and watches TV for a bit until it goes away.

He is in pain, and I think its the reasoning behind his ass hole behavior.

He would NEVER call his mother any of the things he calls me. She would slap him silly

I do believe I've been groomed since he was my first of everything, other than

1st and 2nd base. I have low self esteem of myself and I have had thoughts

that he would be the only man to think of me as attractive and afraid to leave

him and being alone. That is my fear in life, being alone.

Now...updates...

This morning (Monday 6/8) I went to his parents house to have a discussion

with him. His mom was present and she was a neutral party this time. She was

also there to make sure he doesn't start calling me names and shit.

I told him that his attitude needs to stop and change if he wants to continue

this marriage. He also needs to start contributing to household duties if he is

going to stay at home. If not, he can find a job that is minimally invasive, like

the post office is needing rural drivers. He agreed to household chores.

Frank got very emotional with our talk. I am still figuring out if he's just acting

a part, or actually feeling guilty. According to MIL (lets call her Rachel), FIL

(lets call him Hank) ripped him a new one. He said along the lines of "Never

raised him to treat women the way he treats me." Hank is an old fashioned

southern man (We live in NC) and was taught to treat women equally and with lots of love.

Frank promises to never call me names, will contribute to the household and also earn his spending money by cleaning.

So, he is back home for now. So far, so good. He keeps apologizing and love bombing me like crazy,

I will update if anything changes.

Sometimes the hardest relationship decisions come when love, loyalty, and exhaustion all exist at the same time.

A person can care deeply about their partner’s struggles while also reaching a point where they feel invisible, unsupported, and emotionally drained.

OP’s situation is not simply about money or video games; it is about what happens when one person feels they have been carrying the weight of a partnership alone for years.

OP entered this marriage very young and spent much of it adapting to her husband’s circumstances.

While Frank’s health issues appear to be real and his chronic pain may genuinely limit some activities, OP describes a relationship where support became one-sided.

She became the primary financial provider, worked multiple jobs, handled responsibilities, and still found herself being insulted when she asked for basic contributions.

The emotional pain seems to come less from providing for him and more from feeling that her sacrifices were treated as an expectation rather than appreciated.

A different perspective is that chronic illness can affect a person’s identity and emotional state.

Someone who loses the ability to work may experience frustration, shame, or grief over the life they imagined having.

However, those emotions do not excuse mistreating a partner. The important distinction is between needing support and using hardship as a reason to avoid responsibility.

OP’s husband may need compassion for his physical limitations, but OP also deserves compassion for the pressure of being the sole provider and emotional caretaker.

This perspective helps explain why OP reached a breaking point over a $40 game membership. The purchase itself was not the real conflict.

It represented a larger pattern where she felt responsible for everything while Frank still expected access to her income without showing the same level of responsibility toward the household.

His reaction also shifted the issue from finances into respect, because insults and anger can make a partner feel unsafe expressing normal needs.

The update shows a possible turning point because Frank agreed to change his behavior and OP created clearer expectations.

However, lasting improvement will depend on consistent actions rather than apologies alone. A few days of kindness cannot repair years of resentment; trust is rebuilt through repeated, dependable behavior.

OP’s story highlights an important truth: supporting a partner through hardship does not mean sacrificing one’s own dignity. A healthy relationship allows both people to struggle, contribute, and be valued.

Compassion and accountability can exist together, and both are necessary for a partnership to survive.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters said OP’s husband contributes little and behaves like a dependent child

0fluffythe0ferocious − Divorce this guy. He's not even trying to contribute. Aren't there

people who were able to make money playing videogames? And the fact that he's acting like

a spoiled five year old? Divorce, let him be his parents' problem now.

macci_a_vellian − He doesn't work and he doesn't do housework and he calls you names and

throws tantrums. What is he actually bringing to the marriage?

Suitable-Bike6971 − You're a single married person. Get a divorce.

Electra_Ray − Omg no. This is not a relationship and he is not your husband. That is your

grown ass child. I somewhat agree with his parents, you’ve allowed this behavior for an

unhealthy amount of time. However, that does not equate to “why stop now”. All of us

potatoes are telling you to leave, not because it’s Reddit and what everyone says.

We’re telling you to leave because you should have NEVER dealt with a child man to begin

with. You need to get yourself to a healthier and more confident place, because this is such

an unhealthy p__asitic relationship. You NEED to put your own self first and leave,

immediately. No one should ever be allowed to just mooch forever.

He can go do that at his parent’s house, they made him and raised him. He’s their problem

not yours. Not to mention the verbal abuse he gives you! !! And he doesn’t take care of the

housework? ? You haven’t been married this whole time, because that’s not what marriage

looks like, you adopted a man child .

These users condemned his verbal abuse and said OP deserves respect from her partner

ChangeOfHeart69 − Oh my god girl RUN, why have you been putting up with this man child

for over a decade? ?? You are a NURSE, you can do better than this! !! No issues with him

being disabled, but he’s treating you like CRAP when you do EVERYTHING for him! !!! He

does not get to talk to you like that! !!

Autumndickingaround − Him calling you that, is all you should need. I’d never stay with

someone who called me that, let alone called me that while not doing any housework and

sitting on his ass. I have a chronic condition and I do everything that I can to take care of the

house and my child while my partner is at work during the day.

When they’re home, I do what I’m most capable of and he does what he is most capable of,

and we tackle the rest together or I do my best while telling them to relax because they’ve

been working all day. He should be doing what he can do for you and for the house, for your life TOGETHER.

He’s not, because it’s not about you for him. It’s about HIS life. He’s gotten you to do all of

this for him for so long, that he hasn’t ever considered anything else because this is exactly what he wanted and wants.

The fact that you got married at 19 and he was 25 could also speak to his mindset at the

time, perhaps thinking you’d be easier to manipulate (easier to get to understand) and

support him. Normally, speaking as someone who has a chronic illness, we do not ever just

sink ourselves into someone else to take care of us.

That’s just plain selfish, not even considering the other persons life. Normally, we are very

aware of what they do for us and we show gratitude, if not then you’ve got an a__hole. ETA:

truly not judging you at all. It’s just when I was 24 I wouldn’t have wanted anything to do with

someone was barely into college.

To me, they would’ve been too immature. But to someone who wants someone complacent?

Who wants someone to just look up to them and trust them, and eventually help in whatever

way they need? Maybe someone from a family where the woman takes care of things, but

also seeing your work ambition he wanted both of those things?

Either way, he has no respect for you and doesn’t truly love you because anyone who truly

loved you would not treat you this way… Heck, anyone with a brain who didn’t also believe

they had you right in their back pocket for life, would not speak to you this way with everything you’re doing for him.

He has to believe you’d never actually leave him, he believes he can guilt you back into your

place in his life, that’s the only reason he’d still act this way.

Or he’s an entitled child that needs a slap of reality to wake up, and he’ll never see what

you’re doing as giving him a wake up call, he’ll see it as you being a brat that needs to get

back in line. It’s warped sounding because it IS warped to people with empathy and who see

everyone’s in their own circumstances and own stories.

People who aren’t only focused on themselves see things differently than those who act as

though they’re a main character being wronged by everyone who makes them question their own behavior negatively.

Critical-Adeptness-1 − Never stay married to anyone who calls you a “fing bh, full stop.

Especially when you pay all the bills.

Abject_Director7626 − You should look up the urban dictionary definition of b__ch, show it to

him, and let him know between the 2 of you, he is in fact the b__ch.

This group strongly supported separation or divorce due to the unhealthy marriage dynamic

New_Caregiver_4142 − I would start the legal separation. You can always try going to

marriage counseling during that period if you want to work on the relationship. Your husband

has never had to grow up by the sounds of it and I doubt with a conversation he is going to stop acting like an entitled child.

It sounds like your quality of life will drastically improve by separating. Best of luck to you!

MandyBarr − I'm gonna say reddit s favorite line: DIVORCE! !! Enjoy your life, babe. That's not love

OP spent years carrying the financial burden, household responsibilities, and emotional weight of a marriage that increasingly felt one-sided.

While Frank’s health struggles are real, OP reached a breaking point when a simple boundary about spending money turned into another insult-filled argument.

The conversation with his parents may have opened a door for change, but lasting improvement will depend on consistent actions rather than apologies or temporary effort.

Do you think OP should give him another chance with clear boundaries, or was this pattern already too damaging to repair? How long should someone wait to see if promises become real change? Share your thoughts below!
