Woman Loses 75 Pounds but Friend Keeps Mocking Her Weight, She Finally Walks Away

A single act of kindness can sometimes reach someone at the exact moment they need it most.

For people who have spent years hearing negative words about themselves, hearing genuine appreciation from another person can feel life-changing.

In this story, a woman was struggling in a relationship that had slowly damaged her self-esteem.

Her boyfriend’s words and actions left her feeling unwanted, but she did not know how to break free.

A surprising encounter with someone she never expected to connect with helped her realize that she deserved more than what she had been accepting.

Scroll down to see how OP turned one painful chapter into a fresh start.

A college student avoids a hurtful friend after repeated weight comments make group meals uncomfortable

'AITA Because I Didn't Do Lunch with Friends Because Of Seating?'

So, I (20F) have always been a heavier person. This is not in a demeaning way, just honest.

I began losing weight when I started college and am now down 75lbs and

am only 100lbs away from my goal. Despite this, many haven't noticed or just don't care about what I've done.

One of these people in question is "Guy" (19M). Guy was one of my friends,

but he started making many comments about my weight back in April. At

first, it could be taken as harmless, but it slowly got more malicious and

mean. He would even find ways to bring it up without me even having to mention my weight directly.

It got to a point that it started causing a negative image of myself to

resurface and having to put serious distance between us. Despite this, my

closest college friend "Ryan" (20M) has tried to get me to give Guy another

chance. I refused for the longest time but opted to try when this school year started.

One of the things to keep in mind is that our entire friend group generally

tries to eat meals together. There is six of us in the group, but Guy usually

gets there first, so he gets to call where we sit, and he always picks spots

that are way too small to fit six. Because of how tight the squeeze is, I have

asked multiple times if we can move to a different spot. Guy always tells

me that it shouldn't be an issue to begin with and heavily implies that it's

only a tight squeeze because of my weight. Other times, I just get ignored.

I now try not to eat with the group anymore. Or if I do, it has to be meals where I know Guy won't be there.

Well, one day Ryan texted the group chat and asked if anyone was joining

him for lunch. I didn't get a good idea of who all would be there, so I said

yes. However, once I got to the dining hall, I saw a message from Guy saying

he found a seat for all of us. I tried to not get too nervous, but when I got

there, the table was tiny. Like, it could barely fit Guy and Ryan, and they were both really skinny guys!

I just contemplated for a moment, turned, walked to a different section of

the dining hall, ran into two of my friends, and ate with them instead.

I started getting texted by Ryan, Guy, and one other person asking where I

was. I almost ignored it but ended up just texting back that I decided to have lunch with someone else instead.

The three of them saw me and were glaring at me or just looked really

disappointed the rest of the time they were there. I almost went to sit with

them or go over to apologize, but then I saw their table and they invited a

fourth person... and everyone was squeezing close together to the point

that two of them were halfway off their seats. So, I decided against it.

Ryan has since forgiven me (he was never mad in the first place) but Guy is

still really angry with me and won't speak to me. This whole incident

happened a few days ago and I'm wondering. AITA?

EDIT: Thanks to everyone who gave awards, advice, and kind words! You're

all so sweet and I realized that I'm definitely NTA on this one. I'll keep

everyone's words in mind going forward, thanks again!

Being judged by others can hurt, but being repeatedly judged by someone you consider a friend can be especially damaging.

Friends are usually the people we expect to make us feel accepted, so when someone repeatedly targets an insecurity, it can slowly change how safe we feel around them.

In this situation, the OP was not simply avoiding a small table at lunch. The table was connected to a much larger pattern of experiences with Guy.

After losing 75 pounds through her own effort, she was already navigating a complicated relationship with her body image.

Instead of recognizing her progress or treating her with kindness, Guy repeatedly brought attention back to her weight.

Over time, those comments created anxiety and made a normal social activity, sharing a meal with friends, feel uncomfortable and humiliating.

Her decision to leave the table was less about the physical space and more about protecting herself from a situation where she expected to feel embarrassed again.

A different perspective is that the lunch incident was not an isolated disagreement between friends. It shows how repeated small comments can influence someone’s behavior long before a major conflict happens.

From Guy’s perspective, he may have viewed each comment as a joke or believed he was simply being honest. However, intent does not erase impact.

When someone repeatedly highlights a sensitive topic, especially after seeing that it causes discomfort, the relationship can become emotionally unsafe.

OP was not reacting to one chair arrangement; she was reacting to months of feeling singled out.

She was asking for basic consideration. A friend does not have to fully understand someone’s insecurity to respect a clear boundary.

Once OP explained that the seating situation was uncomfortable, continuing to dismiss her concerns communicated that her feelings were less important than maintaining the status quo.

The situation also highlights why supportive friendships matter during personal growth.

Weight loss, confidence changes, and identity shifts can already be emotionally complicated.

Having people around who encourage progress rather than repeatedly remind someone of old insecurities can make a significant difference.

OP’s choice to eat lunch elsewhere was not an attack on the group. It was a quiet decision to remove herself from a situation that had become uncomfortable.

Healthy friendships allow people to express discomfort without being punished for it.

The larger lesson is that respect is often shown through small actions.

A person does not need to understand every insecurity someone has, but they should care when their behavior repeatedly causes harm.

A friendship should feel like a place where someone can relax, not another place where they have to defend their right to take up space.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters supported OP and said Guy’s behavior was bullying rather than genuine friendship

desertboots − NTA But. Ryan nor Guy are your friends. They are

acquaintances who would rather abuse you for their own entertainment.   Block their numbers and move on.

BrooklynIrish73 − NTA. Guy isn’t your friend. Friends don’t abuse each

other. Ditch this guy and spend time with your actual friends or make new ones.

KatzAKat − NTA. Congrats on the weight loss! That's a huge

accomplishment. Keep up the good and hard work. Guy likes control and

demeaning someone and you're his current target. That's not a friend. The

others may find themselves his target when you're no longer available.

CatsMom4Ever − NTA.   So Guy, who taunts you and tries to make you feel

uncomfortable, doesn't to talk to you because you won't put up with his behavior any more? Win for you.

Living_Cranberry_890 − NTA. The real reason Guy is angry is because you

denied him a chance to bully you for his own entertainment. If the others

won’t stand up for you, they aren’t your friends either. You should only

hang out with people who build you up not tear you down.

This Guy bully will likely double down on the bullying the more weight you

lose because bullies don’t like it when their victims succeed. Real friends

don’t behave this way. Stand strong OP.

These Redditors agreed the seating issue was unreasonable and said the problem was not OP’s weight

Melek6688 − NTA. Four skinny people could barely fit at that table. Pretty sure your weight wasn't the problem here.

SunshineShoulders87 − He won’t speak to you because you didn’t sit with

him? ! Is he 5? It would change my opinion if he was 5. Otherwise, NTA. If he

wants to pick where everyone eats, he needs to make it work for everyone.

ChibbleChobble − NTA. Guy is though. He's also a bully. If he gave a single

s__t, he could find a table with sufficient seating. He is deliberately making

life difficult for you and mocking you as well. Get better friends. Good luck!

This group argued OP should distance herself from the group and recognize they were not supportive friends

GreenInternal4321 − YTA but to yourself! These people are not your

friends, why are you continuing to try and hang out with them?

No_Recover_3393 − I think Ryan was trying to keep you there so he wasn’t

Guy’s target. Please realize friends will gladly move tables for a friend. I’m

so happy for your weight loss and hopefully the future loss of frienemies.

These users believed Guy was seeking control and using the situation as an excuse to continue targeting OP

Just-Tangerine-4985 − NTA. They're not your friends. Good friends would

be trying to uplift you with your goals. Your goal is to lose weight, they

should be a noticing and encouraging. There’s no way they didn’t notice 75

pounds lost. That’s a huge accomplishment. They're a waste of your time.

Guy probably has a thing for you and you should tell him to kick rocks.

Altruistic_Jello6 − He's not mad about the seat. He's mad his weird power play didn't work.

The situation was never just about where people sat for lunch.

It was about repeated comments, uncomfortable situations, and the impact of being around someone who made the poster feel judged instead of accepted.

After working hard on her own journey, choosing a space where she felt comfortable was a reasonable boundary.

Some readers may see the lunch decision as avoiding conflict, while others may feel she had every right to protect her peace.

Do you think the OP should have explained herself more, or was walking away the healthiest choice? Share your thoughts below.
