Girlfriend Threatens To End Relationship If Boyfriend Becomes His Best Friend’s Best Man

Relationships often require compromise, but some situations reveal a much deeper conflict about trust, boundaries, and personal freedom. When two important parts of someone’s life come into conflict, finding a solution can become far more complicated than simply choosing one side.

One Reddit user found himself facing that exact dilemma after his longtime best friend became engaged. With the wedding approaching, he expected to celebrate a major milestone with someone he had known for two decades.

However, a conversation with his girlfriend quickly changed the situation when she explained that she did not want him to take on a role in the wedding party.

She had concerns about the responsibilities involved and what it might mean for their relationship. Now, he is trying to figure out whether there is a fair compromise or if this disagreement reveals a bigger issue. Keep reading to see how others responded.

'My (31M) GF(38) doesn't want me to be part of my best friend's (31M) wedding and is willing to end the relationship if I accept to be his best man....

My best friend of 20yrs got engaged earlier this year. I received a save the date for the wedding coming up this November.

When my GF saw the save the date she made a comment asking if I thought my friend would ask me to be the best man or a groomsmen.

I told her I'm not sure if they're doing friends or family in the wedding party since they both have several siblings.

She then said if he asks you to be in the wedding you'll have to tell him no.

Her reasoning being the responsibility of a bestman is expensive, she doesn't trust what would happen at the bachelor party

and that she'd have to attend the wedding virtually alone since I would be directly involved in the ceremony, photos, reception ect.

I told her that's a difficult thing to ask of me and while I understand her worries and anxieties about the situation this is something

I'd want to do as my friendship is important to me and I want to be involved in my friends wedding.

She said its not that we can't go to the wedding, I just can't be a part of it and accepting his offer would be crossing a boundry

by compromising her mental health and well-being and be cause to end our relationship of 3yrs.

Is there a compromise I can offer or a way to approach and revisit the conversation?

Sometimes the hardest relationship conflicts are not about choosing between two people, but about feeling forced to prove which relationship matters more.

The OP’s situation is difficult because it places two important bonds against each other: a long friendship that has lasted two decades and a romantic relationship that he has invested in for several years. The emotional tension comes from the feeling that accepting one meaningful role may be interpreted as rejecting the other.

At the center of this conflict is not only the wedding itself. The girlfriend appears to be reacting to what the role represents to her: financial pressure, uncertainty around the bachelor party, and fear of feeling alone during an important event. Those concerns may come from insecurity or anxiety rather than a desire to control him.

At the same time, the OP seems to feel that being asked to stand beside his best friend would be a significant life moment, and being told he must refuse may feel like a demand to sacrifice an important part of his identity.

A different perspective is that this situation is really about boundaries versus control. A boundary usually describes what someone will do to protect their own well-being.

A demand asks another person to change their choices to remove discomfort. The distinction can become complicated because both people may genuinely feel hurt. The girlfriend may believe she is protecting the relationship, while the OP may feel he is being asked to abandon a friendship to maintain peace.

Relationship researcher Dr. John Gottman has studied how couples handle disagreements and emotional differences. His work suggests that successful couples do not avoid conflict completely; instead, they learn to discuss disagreements with respect, understand each other’s underlying needs, and avoid treating differences as personal attacks.

Gottman also emphasizes that partners need to maintain a sense of individuality while building a shared life together.

That perspective is important here because the deeper issue may not be the wedding role itself. The couple may need to explore what each person believes the decision means.

For the OP, being best man may symbolize loyalty and honoring a lifelong friendship. For his girlfriend, it may symbolize fears about priorities, trust, or being excluded. Addressing those meanings may be more productive than debating only the practical details.

A possible path forward would involve separating realistic concerns from assumptions. They could discuss the actual responsibilities involved, such as costs, time commitments, and bachelor party expectations, rather than treating the entire role as one unavoidable problem.

The OP can also consider how to reassure his partner without automatically giving up something important to him.

Strong relationships require compromise, but compromise does not always mean one person gives up a meaningful experience to avoid conflict. Sometimes it means finding ways for both people’s important relationships and needs to have space.

The bigger question is whether this disagreement is about one wedding, or whether it reveals a larger pattern of how the couple handles independence, trust, and difficult decisions.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters viewed the girlfriend’s behavior as a major relationship problem and questioned whether the relationship could continue

Real-Camel-273 − Life’s too short and too big to settle down with someone like this.

Some things are not worth working out. To me this is an easy relationship ender.

CantaloupeShort7311 − You really want to be with someone this insecure and who has told you she doesn't trust you?

She is 38 and acting like she is 15.

ReadMeDrMemory − Thank her for letting you know that she is crazily insecure, so you need to dump her immediately.

That is fairly priceless info, so she deserves the thanks.

Her mental health and well-being would be compromised by your being a member of the wedding party? Wow, just wow.

Maxentius777 − Someone talking like that at 38 is very immature/unwell. Do yourself a favour and let them find their match in crazy.

These Redditors argued that the girlfriend’s demand was more of a rule or ultimatum than a healthy personal boundary

tiacalypso − Boundaries are something you set around yourself, not around your partner. Make of that info what you will.

DoctorGuvnor − So she's laying down an ultimatum about something you haven't yet been offered because she can't trust you to behave at the stag night.

(She does know other people besides the best man get invited to these, doesn't she? )

What's next? She won't trust you to go to Walmart because the cashier might be cute?

When someone shows you clearly what their mindset is, it's best to believe it.

Voleuse − accepting his offer would be crossing a boundry That's not a boundary, that's a rule.

Please please please don't miss out on your friends wedding because of this.

It will damage the friendship and you can never get that back. Let her stay home, let her break up your relationship over something trivial if she wants to.

She's acting like a toddler that demands to be coddled. "Bad for my mental health" my ass.

HumanMap709 − She's nuts and trying to use therapy speak to manipulate you. That's not a "boundary. " That's an ultimatum. She needs help

These users criticized the behavior as controlling, saying trust and independence are important parts of a relationship

ClockworkMeow − This is 100% a relationship ending ultimatum.

Your girlfriend is controlling, insecure & a parade of red flags: 🚩 Telling you what to do like you're a child instead of an adult 🚩

Insinuating she can't trust you if she's not there to supervise you 🚩 Refusing to accept the importance of friendships outside your relationship 🚩

Attempting to alienate you from your friends 🚩 Attempting to dictate your finances

🚩 Not being self reliant enough to hang out for a few hours at a wedding without needing literal hand holding

🚩 Projecting her anxiety & insecurities on you She sounds absolutely exhausting.

Can you imagine how much less stressful your life would be without her?

DuePromotion287 − Hello Red Flag. When crazy shows itself, walk away from crazy.

Should a partner be able to veto a meaningful friendship commitment because of anxiety? Or should both people find a way to respect each other’s needs? Share your thoughts below.
