Man Learns His Childhood Best Friend Faces Child Abuse Charges, Then Questions Everything He Thought He Knew

Sometimes, the most disturbing discoveries come from people you thought you knew better than anyone. When someone you trusted for years is accused of something horrifying, it can leave you questioning not only that person, but your own judgment and every memory you shared.

One Redditor found himself facing that kind of shock after learning something devastating about his longtime best friend. The two had known each other since elementary school, lived together for years, and remained close through major changes in their lives. They eventually grew apart as marriage, careers, and children took them in different directions.

Then he learned that his former roommate and closest friend had been arrested after being caught committing a serious crime involving a child. Suddenly, decades of memories were being viewed through an entirely different lens.

Now he is struggling to understand how he could have known someone for so long without recognizing what was happening. Keep reading to see what he shared.

A man is shattered after learning his lifelong best friend was arrested for abusing a child, forcing him to question everything he thought he knew

'My best friend is a child molester'

So my friend and I met in elementary school, we were close. As we got out of high school he joined the army and did his thing

while I did mine but we kept in contact. After he left the military, I even drove 900 miles and picked him up from base.

We lived together for a long time as roommates and just lived our life. Played video games mostly, we were both kinda losers tbh lol.

A few years ago I was getting married and ultimately moved out and he was in a relationship with a girl and they moved in together.

Him and his girl got married and they had a son together last July. My wife and I had a daughter this past December.

We hadn’t talked in a while. Lives were just kinda going different directions and with kids it’s hard.

I distanced myself from him just because he was still rather lazy and I just wanted to keep focused and not let that affect me.

His wife has 3 kids from before they got married. I found out he was caught in the act molesting their 11 year old.

After that he barricaded himself in the garage with his gun before surrendering to the police.

He is currently in custody with multiple felony charges, and I guess this had been going on for a while.

I knew this person better than anyone. I lived with him for years. If there was anyone on this earth I trusted it would be him. How does this happen?

I can’t wrap my head around it. What did I miss? I just feel after this like who can you trust?

There was never an indication he had any issues whatsoever and that’s what kills me. How can people be so normal yet be so deranged and do these things.

If anyone has any idea as to what goes on in the mind of the types of people it might help me get a better

understanding of how the hell that happened. I am just so shocked and disgusted. Thank you for hearing it out :)

One of the most frightening realizations in life is discovering that someone you trusted completely was capable of something you never imagined. The shock is especially profound when the person has been part of your life for decades.

The OP is not only confronting the alleged crimes of a former best friend; he is also revisiting years of memories and wondering whether every familiar interaction concealed something he failed to recognize.

The psychological conflict comes from the collision between two versions of the same person. The friend the OP remembers was a childhood companion, military veteran, roommate, and someone he trusted enough to drive hundreds of miles to help. The person described in the new allegations appears radically different.

That contradiction can produce an agonizing search for clues: *What did I miss? Was there something obvious? Could I have known?* Unfortunately, hindsight can make ordinary details appear suspicious even when they were not recognizable at the time.

There is another perspective that may help explain why this feels so destabilizing. People often imagine dangerous individuals as visibly strange, antisocial, or obviously threatening. Real-world abuse does not always fit that stereotype.

A person can maintain friendships, hold responsibilities, appear sociable, and cultivate a positive reputation while concealing harmful behavior. That does not mean every friendly person should be viewed with suspicion; it means outward normality is not reliable proof of someone’s private conduct.

RAINN explains that many children who experience sexual abuse are harmed by someone they already know and trust. Its research-based guidance on grooming also notes that perpetrators may deliberately build trust with victims, families, friends, and communities, sometimes creating reputations that make suspicion less likely.

Grooming can involve friendship, kindness, special attention, secrecy, or gradual boundary violations, and it can occur over extended periods.

That information does not mean the OP should now reinterpret every memory as evidence. In fact, doing so may make the psychological aftermath harder.

His question—“What did I miss?”—may have no satisfying answer. If the allegations are accurate, the responsibility for concealing the behavior belongs to the person who committed it, not to friends who did not know what was happening.

The OP is also experiencing a form of betrayal that extends beyond the immediate crime. He recently became a father himself, which may make the discovery particularly horrifying.

Having a daughter can change the emotional lens through which someone sees children and safety, making the contrast between his trust in this man and the alleged abuse even harder to comprehend.

Perhaps the most useful realization is that trust does not require perfect knowledge of another human being. People make judgments based on the information available to them. Sometimes those judgments are tragically wrong. That does not mean every friendship was fraudulent or that nobody can ever be trusted again.

The OP may never discover exactly what he “should have seen.” What he can know is that the person responsible for the abuse is the person who chose to commit and conceal it. His own failure to predict another person’s hidden actions is not a moral failure.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters reassured OP that trusting someone in the past does not make them responsible for crimes they later committed

PenguinInDistress − So my childhood friend, whom I never suspected to be evil, killed a child and then killed himself.

Everything was random. Child didn't know him. I was crushed. I hadn't talked to him in 10 years but it hurt.

You are not a bad person for associating with him in the past. You may rack your brain trying to find clues of his past.

But it's not worth it. Give yourself time to heal. I'm so sorry.

holdmychai − Thanks for sharing this. I cant understand it but I know for sure that we never knew a person fully,

its just a version of them and that for a certain period of time.

Connor-Asylum − U can't blame urself for this, everyone has a version of themselves they hide

[Reddit User] − That's nuts, man :/ my brother had a friend like this too when we were growing up.

Out of nowhere this dude calls my brother begging him to bail him out after molesting a 13 year old.

Somewhere I want to think these people can get help, but that's not on you. Some people will surprise you with their shittiness.

These users shared painful experiences involving sexual abuse and explained how difficult it can be when someone they knew is exposed as an offender

factfarmer − How awful for his children. It’s sometimes the same when a woman reports a rape.

And the guys friends say, “I’ve known him for years and there’s no way he would ever do that. ”

I *know him. I would have known. * No one knows until it happens to them.

wigwam422 − I was molested by my dads childhood best friend. He didn’t take it very well

heatherbyism − One of my closest friends, who I considered a brother, recently raped someone at a party. It's a tough thing to deal with.

I found this article helpful. "What to Do if Someone You Know S__ually Assaults Someone Else"

This group stressed that offenders may appear trustworthy or ordinary while concealing harmful behavior from people around them

Bleacherblonde − Molesters are pros at hiding it. Grandparents, uncles, family friends- they are only able to do it

because they are master manipulators and know how to fly under the radar. Don’t let this happening ruin your faith in humanity.

Not everyone is like that. Be suspicious and be careful- but don’t stop trusting your gut.

ShiniestUnicorn − I found out my ex was a child molester. He wrote to me from jail after I turned him in,

e was telling me that I should be thankful and that he's a hero for pleading guilty to the charges. So yeah, there's a bit of insight.

tinysmommy − I recently found out that a coworker who I considered a friend at the time was busted for having over 2,000 files of videos and pictures of CP.

He was caught because his ISP noticed he was using a P2P file sharing service, so they looked and then contacted the police.

He embezzled thousands of dollars from investors he had in his company, and also had a rough chemistry lab in the basement

where he was thought to be making GHB. Because guess what? This MFer was drugging women and raping them and recording it.

One woman didn’t even know until she was contacted by police.

This is a guy who is never in a million years I would peg as a pedophile or rapist.

I don’t know if he had any physical victims, but every child in those videos and pictures were victims. Over 257 known children.

My fear is he somehow funded trafficking or something having to do with CP and it almost f__king killed me when I found out.

These assholes just walk around in secret. I’m a mom. How do I protect my kid from these creeps? Especially when they hide in plain sight?

How would someone process discovering that a lifelong friend wasn’t the person they believed they knew?
