Some dreams are worth chasing even when the ending is not what someone hoped for. A journey can still be meaningful because of the experiences, challenges, and memories created along the way.

The original poster (OP) spent several years pursuing a dream of becoming a professional poker player after leaving his traditional career behind. What started as a personal comeback during a difficult period turned into a life-changing adventure filled with major tournaments, unforgettable moments, and lessons learned.

However, after facing increasing pressure and financial losses, OP has decided it is time to walk away. Read on to discover the story behind this emotional final chapter.

'My dream career is over. It was fun while it lasted'

Tomorrow morning I fly home from Las Vegas, having finished my last two-week pilgrimage to participate in the World Series of Poker.

When I get on the plane, it'll mark the end of my career as a professional poker player.

I quit my day job in the fall of 2021 to work on my mental health,

living off the survivors' benefit I had received from my late wife's car insurance policy in the meantime.

Shortly after I was the recipient of a small windfall of cash from a lawsuit I brought against the company that owned the truck that killed my wife.

By then, I at least felt better about continuing to live, if not good enough to get back to work.

It was then I decided to bet on myself, take a portion of the money from the lawsuit and use it as a bankroll.

I've been passionate about poker since before it was legal for me to play. I watched the coverage of the WSOP on TV.

Saw Chris Moneymaker bring about the poker boom with his rags-to-riches story.

Witnessed over-the-top personalities like Hellmuth, Laak and Matusow become megastars.

So when I finally had access to the kind of money one needs to start a career in poker, I had to take my shot.

I had a lot of fun. I traveled a lot, played stakes from $50 to $10,000, rubbed shoulders with some of the greats.

I had a cameo on Daniel Negreanu's vlog, made Matt Glantz laugh, bluffed Alex Foxen,

busted Eugene Katchalov deep in a tournament, caught Men Nguyen trying to cheat. And I saw a lot of success - and a lot of failure.

Last year was my first losing year. I lost nearly $70,000 playing poker which, combined with taxes and living expenses,

wiped out everything I had earned the year prior. The swings started getting to me, started getting too volatile for me to handle.

I found myself under more stress than I ever had working for a paycheck. So a few months ago, I decided I was done.

I needed to be done before I got in too deep.

I booked one more trip to Vegas to give myself one more shot at glory.

And tomorrow, after scoring only one tournament cash and after losing around 3 grand in total, that last shot will be over.

I'm not 100% on what my future holds. I left my day job on good terms, but that was nearly five years ago - who knows if I fit in...

What I know now is that I'm closing this chapter of my life, one I don't regret, and one I will never, ever forget..

Pictured: my last meal here in Vegas, a double scoop from Ben & Jerry's.

Some dreams are worth pursuing even when they do not end the way we imagined. There is a particular kind of sadness in leaving something voluntarily when it once gave you purpose, excitement, and a reason to keep moving. Ending a dream does not necessarily mean the dream was a mistake.

That seems to be what this former professional poker player is confronting. After losing his wife and stepping away from his career to work on his mental health, he eventually used part of the money he received from a lawsuit to give professional poker a serious chance. It was not a casual hobby.

It was a childhood fascination that eventually became a career, taking him from small stakes to $10,000 games and into rooms with players he had once watched on television.

For several years, the gamble paid off in more ways than money. He traveled, met famous players, experienced victories, suffered losses, and collected stories most people will never have. But eventually the financial volatility became emotionally exhausting.

After losing nearly $70,000 in a single year, he recognized something important: the lifestyle that once felt liberating was becoming another source of stress.

A different perspective is that his decision to stop may actually be one of the most significant successes of the entire experiment. When someone invests years into a dream, there can be enormous pressure to continue simply because they have already sacrificed so much.

Psychologists sometimes describe this through the concept of the sunk cost effect: people may continue pursuing something because abandoning it makes previous investments feel wasted, even when continuing no longer serves them.

Psychologist Daniel Kahneman and behavioral economist Amos Tversky’s work on decision-making helped establish how people can make choices based on previous investments rather than future consequences.

The concept has since become widely studied as the sunk-cost fallacy, where past costs influence decisions that should instead be based on what makes sense going forward.

That idea adds an interesting layer to his final trip to Las Vegas. He did not leave because he failed to become the person he imagined he would be.

He left because he recognized that the emotional and financial cost of continuing had become too high. He had already proved that he was brave enough to take the chance. He did not need to keep gambling to prove that the gamble had been worthwhile.

There is also something meaningful about his uncertainty about what comes next. After five years away from his old career, he does not pretend to have everything figured out.

That uncertainty is uncomfortable, but it is also normal when someone closes a major chapter. Identity often becomes attached to a profession, especially when that profession was something pursued by choice rather than necessity.

His final Vegas meal being a simple double scoop of ice cream feels almost symbolic. No dramatic victory. No miraculous comeback. Just an ending.

And perhaps that is enough. He took his shot, lived the dream for several years, discovered both its rewards and its costs, and walked away before the dream consumed him. Some chapters are valuable not because they last forever, but because they change the person who lived them.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These Redditors encouraged him to embrace the next chapter and viewed walking away as a positive step

Worldly-Basil-8933 − Hell yea, next chapter. Lets fuckin go

NewDogOldDog − Hell yeah man. A lot of people dream of doing something like that and never do. Best wishes and good luck moving forward <3

genman − Sometimes walking away is the most courageous thing to do, Best wishes.

These users praised him for taking a risk, pursuing professional poker, and avoiding major financial damage

TradeMark310 − At least you took the chance, bet on yourself, and didn't lose your ass.

A lot of the bigger guys get backed/funded, so they can have losing years and not even feel it.

When you are using all your own bankroll it can be much harder to be consistent.

I remember years ago, before Full Tilt closed, we had an online crew and one of our guys was like #16 overall one year on the site.

He quit his job and went full time, then like 6 months into the new year he wrote a blog about how

he was playing the same but not getting good results, and had to go back to work. Good on you for trying, for betting on yourself.

Don't look at it as a loss, look at it like you broke even and walked away before you went under. Good luck in your next chapter!

A_Lakers − You did what many people regret not doing. You took a chance. You don’t have to wonder “what if? ”

20/30/40 years from now. You know how it worked out and won’t have any regrets about trying professional poker.

You’ll have those stories for life and no one can take that from you.

Several_Bar_5257 − I think I'm not the only one here when I say that I'm proud of you dude.

You did what a lot of us wanted to do when we saw Chris Moneymaker win the main event

with a couple more non-pro's Joe Hachem and Jamie Gold winning it a couple years after. You full sent it and bet on yourself.

You f__king lived the life that most of us could only dream of. The fact that last year was the only year you were down really says something man.

You f__king killed it while you could and it eventually ran it's course. Keep your chin up man, you experienced life like not many of us could or ever will.

These commenters celebrated the life experiences and memories he gained from following an unconventional path

JackPThatsMe − In 1999 I was 25, me and the love of my life had broken up and I decided that if I didn't have an adventure now

one day I'd wake up at 45 and wonder where it all went.

So I got on a plane for Japan to teach English in 2001. Over the next 6 years I taught English, traveled, acted in a Japanese TV show

alongside Sakai Wakana, hunted for toothfish in the Antarctic ocean with Leigh Craig, became a scuba instructor under Johnas Samuelson,

hunted with barracuda, swam with a whale shark, and had various adventures.

I left to come home to New Zealand because I felt like my life was a party and I didn't want to be the last person at the party saying;

come on, one more drink, one more song. That was a while ago now but I always look back on those days with fondness on.

There's also never a day I regret walking away when I did. When the business is done it's time for the next chapter. All the best for your next adventure.

Mammoth_Tusk90 − Not a guy, but just want to say wow this is a huge accomplishment and a very cool story.

One day, you’ll be telling your life story to some 21-year olds in a bar and they’ll be blown away.

Even better, some of your story hasn’t even been written yet. It’s already interesting.

It reminds me of the phrase, “you haven’t met all of the people who will love you yet. ”

You haven’t met all of the adventures that will find you yet. I feel like your accomplishment is huge because you followed your dreams,

you put yourself first, and you knew when to call it and set a boundary without hurting yourself financially or mentally.

This isn’t the same as “I’ll only play $20 in a slot machine and walk away. ” It’s next level. I don’t know a lot about professional poker

or how one would feel in this situation, but I think you should feel really proud of yourself. You said no advice. I don’t have any.

I wonder though, with so many young people on betting apps right now, how could your story help them learn to have fun

but set healthy boundaries when playing? Not advice, just an observation and genuine question. Maybe there is an opportunity for community.

This user asked about his total earnings from the poker career

Krusty_Krab_Pussy − How much have you made in total? As a ballpark estimate

Was walking away the smartest move, or should he have played one more hand? Could you leave a dream behind after giving it everything? Share your thoughts below!
