Hotel Guest Demands Employee’s Personal Charger Because She Thinks It Belongs To The Hotel

Sometimes, sharing a personal story online leads to unexpected support, advice, and difficult decisions. While many people may agree on what happened, figuring out the next step can still be complicated.

The original poster (OP) was only trying to earn money by babysitting when a disagreement with the parents left her unpaid. After her story received thousands of reactions, OP returned to explain the outcome and respond to suggestions from readers.

From contacting the family to considering legal options, she shares what happened after the original conflict gained attention. Keep reading to find out how this situation ended.

A hotel guest demands an employee’s personal charger, believing working there gives her access to it

'Guest Upset She Can't My Personal Property'

A few days ago I was working my shift when this guest walked up to the desk asking if we had a phone charger

she could borrow since she forgot to pack hers and it was too late in the day to go buy a new one.

I had to tell her that unfortunately the hotel doesn't carry chargers. She seemed shocked and asked why.

I told her we used to, but the problem was that we'd always end up losing them when guests never returned them.

So finally, after replacing who knows how many chargers (both iPhone and Android) the hotel just stopped carrying them.

She was upset, but then asked, "What about that one?" while pointing to the back desk against the wall where there was a phone charging..

My phone to be exact.

I told her the phone was mine as was the charger and therefore I wasn't going to lend it out. She said that wasn't fair, that she should be allowed...

I once again informed her that the charger was mine, not the hotels. She didn't care and actually said that since I worked for the hotel,

anything of mine is part of the hotel while I was on duty and I was obligated to let her use my charger.

I've heard some really weird mental gymnastics from guests in order to justify being given whatever request they're asking for,

but THIS one was out there, even for me.

I told her that she has no rights to my personal property and she was not going to be given my charger no matter what, and she walked off in...

I found out later from my FOS that she came down and complained that I refused her request for the use of my charger.

Apparently she became upset when told once again that an employee's personal property is just that,

their personal property and the hotel would not force us to allow a guest to use it.

The rest of the desk staff and myself are taking bets on whether or not she'll try taking this up with corporate.

Small acts of kindness often make workplaces feel human, but kindness only works when it remains a choice. The moment someone believes they are automatically entitled to another person’s belongings, a simple request can quickly turn into a conflict about respect.

That is what happened in this hotel interaction. A guest arrived at the front desk hoping to borrow a phone charger because she had forgotten hers.

The employee explained that the hotel no longer provided chargers because previous guests failed to return them. Instead of accepting that answer, the guest noticed the employee’s personal charger behind the desk and argued that she should be allowed to use it because the employee was working.

The disagreement was not really about a charger. It was about the guest’s interpretation of what customer service means. She appeared to view an employee’s time, resources, and belongings as extensions of the business. The employee, however, saw an important distinction: being responsible for helping guests does not mean surrendering personal property.

A different perspective is that some customers develop a mindset where paying for a service creates an expectation of unlimited accommodation. In hospitality, employees are often encouraged to be helpful and flexible, which can sometimes blur the line between professional support and personal sacrifice.

A guest may become accustomed to receiving solutions and forget that the person providing those solutions is still an individual with their own boundaries.

Psychologist and author Ramani Durvasula explains that entitlement often involves an expectation that others should prioritize one’s needs without considering the impact on them. She notes that healthy relationships and interactions require recognizing that other people have their own rights, limits, and perspectives.

This does not mean every demanding customer is intentionally trying to be disrespectful. Sometimes people react poorly when they are frustrated, tired, or stressed while traveling. Forgetting a charger can feel like a small emergency when a phone is needed for transportation, communication, or plans. However, frustration does not change ownership.

The employee’s response was reasonable because he offered an explanation, repeated the boundary, and involved management when necessary. He did not refuse help out of spite; he simply declined to provide something that belonged to him personally.

This situation also highlights an important reality for service workers: professionalism does not require unlimited access to their personal lives. A hotel employee can be welcoming, patient, and helpful while still saying no.

The difference between good service and unhealthy expectations is understanding that assistance is offered, not owed beyond reasonable limits.

A charger may seem insignificant, but the lesson behind this interaction is much bigger. Respecting someone’s “no” is one of the simplest ways to show respect for the person behind the job title.

Check out how the community responded:

These Redditors mocked the guest’s extreme entitlement and unreasonable demands

Playful_Robot_5599 − And if she forgot to pack underwear, she would be entitled to yours as well?

random_name_245 − I have heard a lot of absolutely dumb stuff from guests, but this one has to be the most ridiculous.

Where do these people come from with this level of entitlement?

I once gave scissors to a guest (it’s a no because they never return them, I gave her the benefit of the doubt), she said she would return them straight...

She returned them 2 DAYS later and those were the only ones we had at the desk. Never again.

These users agreed chargers should stay with staff or be handled by hotel policy, not personal property

LutschiPutschi − We constantly had a large box full of mobile phone chargers in our lost-and-found. 90% of them were never claimed.

We would give these to guests who had forgotten their own chargers. One guest had forgotten his laptop charger.

I offered to let him charge his laptop in our office using one of our charging cables. Two hours later, he came to pick it up.

I wouldn't even give a guest my private lighter.

iamcode101 − I’ve let people leave their phone at the desk/back office to charge for an hour or so if they forgot their charger,

but never would let them take it to their room.

amndka − I used to offer to charge guests phones at the desk. I am not loaning you anything, you want your phone charged?

Leave it here and go to the bar for an hour. Some people argued but I was also the night manager so I didn’t have to be nice.

AddToBatch − Oh she will ABSOLUTELY take it up with corporate Edit: thanks for the award, kind stranger!

These commenters shared examples of guests wrongly expecting employees to provide personal money or belongings

sellyourselfshort − I once had a guest make a complaint about me for not giving them money for the vending machine.

Not change, money from my pocket because they had no cash. ..

NYC-WhWmn-ov50 − I would tell her that since slavery is no longer legal and the hotel does not own me, her logic is flawed.

Hiwever, if she brings me her wallet and allows me to keep it with all her credit cards and ID as collateral, I would lend her my charger.

She gets her wallet back when she gives me my charger back.

Oh, she doesnt like that? Weird, I dont like being called a slave to my employer.

These Reddit users suggested hotels could sell or rent chargers instead of lending them freely

neeroberts − It seems like a missed opportunity for most hotels. Just sell them at a huge markup. People need them.

HonkyKong682 − I found that putting a price on things tends to end the argument and put the ball in the other person's court.

Yes, I can rent you my personal charger. $500 cash, up front. You get 400 back if returned working in an hour or I consider it a sale for $500.

They won't take the offer, but psychologically that's on them.

It ends the my rights and begging arguments. Folks are used to choosing not to pay for something too expensive,

but not used to being told no for a favor. You could technically start a business.

Heck, your hotel might want to consider lending chargers, they have the customers credit card.

Do you think the guest misunderstood customer service, or was her expectation completely unreasonable? Have you ever dealt with a customer request that crossed the line? Share your thoughts below!
