Husband Explains Why He Cheated, But His Wife Realizes The Truth Hurts More Than The Affair

Discovering that someone you love has been unfaithful can already be devastating, but sometimes the explanation behind it can hurt in an entirely different way. Words spoken in moments like these can leave emotional wounds that are difficult to process.

The original poster (OP) learned that her husband had been cheating throughout their marriage, including during a time when she was pregnant with their child.

When she asked why he made those choices despite their years together, his response left her struggling with more than just the betrayal itself. Instead of finding clarity, OP was left questioning her own worth and comparing herself to the person involved. Read on to see how OP is trying to process this painful revelation.

A woman is devastated after her husband reveals the hurtful reason he gave for his long-term affair

'My husband told me why he cheated on me'

It just came to my attention that my husband has been cheating on me on and off for 2 years.

He started cheating on me while I was pregnant because I didn’t feel like having s__ due to pregnancy symptoms.

He cheated on me with two different women. The first girl was a stranger he just met when he was out one night.

But there’s this one girl in particular that he keeps having s__ with. They’ve been friends with benefits for almost a year now.

I asked my husband WHY. WHY WOULD HE DO THIS TO ME.

We have a family together, we built a life together, and he threw away 8 years for a girl that hasn’t even graduated college yet?

He said to me, “she’s beautiful. She’s quiet, she’s simple, she’s not annoying. She doesn’t nag me. She doesn’t argue, she’s not combative.

She’s not fat and she’s not lazy. She’s fun, she’s spontaneous. I forget about my troubles when I’m around her.

She makes my life easier oppose to complicating it like you. She’s just everything that you’re not anymore but you use to be.

She’s a younger version of you. She reminded me of you 15 years ago”

I’m honestly still processing. It doesn’t feel like it’s real, I keep thinking I’m going to wake up from this nightmare. I feel so bad about myself.

Everything he said to me actually made me feel worse than when I found out about his affair

Discovering an affair is already devastating. But sometimes the explanation someone gives afterward can create a completely different kind of pain, because it attacks not only trust but also a person’s sense of worth.

In this situation, the OP discovered that her husband had been cheating for years, including during her pregnancy. When she asked why he made those choices despite their marriage and family, she expected an explanation. Instead, she received a comparison.

Her husband described the other woman as beautiful, easygoing, quiet, and someone who made his life feel less complicated. He compared her to who his wife used to be years earlier and suggested that the other woman represented a younger version of her.

Those words understandably cut deeply. The betrayal itself says, “someone broke an agreement.” The comparison adds another layer by making the betrayed partner feel as though they were replaced because they were no longer enough.

However, the explanation he gave reflects his perspective and his choices, not an objective measurement of the OP’s value.

Long-term relationships naturally change people. Pregnancy, parenting, work, stress, aging, and responsibilities all affect how someone behaves and how a relationship feels. The person someone was at 20 or 25 is not supposed to remain exactly the same forever. A healthy partner understands that love evolves alongside new circumstances.

The idea that someone is “easier” simply because they are outside the daily realities of a relationship is also misleading. A person who is only experienced during exciting moments, without shared bills, parenting responsibilities, difficult conversations, or years of accumulated stress, is being seen in a completely different context.

Psychologist Esther Perel has discussed how affairs are often connected to fantasy, novelty, and the desire to experience a different version of oneself, rather than simply being about the qualities of the affair partner. She has noted that people may pursue affairs partly because they associate them with excitement, freedom, or a temporary escape from everyday pressures.

That does not excuse cheating. A difficult marriage, unmet needs, or personal frustrations can be addressed through communication, counseling, or honest decisions. Choosing secrecy and betrayal places responsibility on the person who made that choice.

The painful irony is that the qualities he praised in the other woman may not actually be qualities unique to her. Someone who is not sharing years of conflict, exhaustion, and responsibility with him will naturally appear different. The comparison may be between a real partner carrying the weight of life and a relationship existing mostly in a limited, exciting space.

The OP’s hurt also shows why the wording mattered. He could have taken responsibility by saying he made selfish choices, avoided problems, or failed to communicate. Instead, he framed the affair as a reaction to her changing.

But people are allowed to change. A woman becoming a mother, becoming tired, gaining weight, having different priorities, or needing support does not make her less deserving of loyalty and respect.

The question after betrayal is not only “Why did this happen?” It is also “What kind of person takes their dissatisfaction and turns it into deception?”

The affair was his decision. The comparison was his decision too. Neither one defines the OP’s worth.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These Redditors condemned the husband’s cheating and viewed his actions as deeply harmful

DogOfTheBone − It's because he's a huge a__hole who doesn't love his family. Divorce the f__ker. Take him to the cleaners. Make him miserable.

[Reddit User] − There is a man who posted on here a while ago with a similar story to your husband.

He said the young girl stroked his ego basically and made him feel good.

The wife obviously dumped him, and he went running to the young girl. They lasted maybe a couple months.

He's alone now living in an apt by himself and his wife has the house and kids.

She also has a new husband who plays house with his kids and she's happy while he's miserable.

Your husband is living in delusion if he thinks this ends anywhere well for him.

The man who posted on here posted his story as a warning to water the grass at home and not do what he did.

Unfortunately, your husband chased an ego boost instead of working on his family and now he will lose his family, and probably the young chick too.

Once life gets real and he wants her to act as a step mom she will RUN.

[Reddit User] − That’s what I like to call a real piece of s__t.

These users argued that the affair partner only sees the easier side of him without family responsibilities

Foolish5678 − She is probably all of those things because she doesn't put up with his s__t on a regular basis like you do.

She gets the easy parts of him Pack his s__t up including his dirty laundry and send him to her house.

When he is done ruining her life, he will find another shiny new object to ruin

grumpy__g − Yeah… every women is fun till she has children, the majority of the work and a s__tty husband.

Why can’t you be fun again? Because of my s__tty husband.

travertine_ghost − u/BurbNBougie has a great take on this kind of scenario.

Your husband benefits from all the unpaid labour you do taking care of your child, domestic chores etc.

But here’s the kicker *the Affair Partner is also benefiting from your unpaid labour. *

He shows up at her house wearing clothes you washed with food you prepared in his belly.

Sure she doesn’t nag and is more fun to be with, she gets to have all of the fun with none of the work, none of the responsibility.

Once you take yourself out of the picture, their dynamic will change. But you don’t need to concern yourself with that.

Focus on getting your ducks in a row regarding custody, child and spousal support.

Do it on the down low. Be as stealthy as he was before you found out about the cheating.

Once everything is in place, that’s when you show your cards.

CaptainDangerous7353 − Of course she's fun, she doesn't have him weighing her down!

She has no responsibility to be with a man who would rather cheat on her than love and cherish her.

Men don't realize if that college girl was pregnant and waddling around with no libido she wouldn't be much fun either.

You're better than this and him OP. You kept your vows.

These commenters recommended medical testing and legal steps after the alleged affair

WolverineNo8799 − Hire a divorce attorney, ask for child support and alimony.

Ask for the clause that no new partners can be introduced to your child until the parents have officially been dating for one year.

Ask that he get supervised visits only so that his AP has nothing to do with your child.

Get a full srd screening done, and tell all of your friends and family, including his about his affair. Updateme!

virtualchoirboy − He has a funny way of saying "I'm a c__ard who can't face talking to my partner about issues in our relationship".

I'm sincerely hoping you've got consultations with lawyers set up and an appointment for an STD test.

Do you think his explanation revealed the real problem in the marriage, or was it simply an excuse for a choice he made? Share your thoughts below!
