Pregnant SIL Shamed Her Birth Choices, Now Her “Perfect” Homebirth Is Falling Apart

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Some family drama becomes especially satisfying when someone who has spent months judging your choices suddenly has to deal with an inconvenient situation of their own.

It can be difficult not to enjoy a little karma when you’ve been on the receiving end of their behavior.

The original poster’s sister-in-law has criticized nearly every major decision they’ve made during pregnancy, from birth control to delivery choices.

Things became even more competitive after OP announced their pregnancy, with the sister-in-law apparently hiding her own pregnancy timeline and becoming obsessed with having the perfect birth experience.

Now she is far past the expected due date and still determined to have the home birth she planned.

OP genuinely hopes both mother and baby remain healthy, but admits there’s a certain satisfaction in watching someone who judged her so harshly face an outcome she can’t control. Read on to see what happened!

A pregnant woman quietly enjoys watching her sister-in-law face an uncertain birth plan after months of hurtful behavior

not the actual photo

'Pregnant NSIL is “overdue” by 2 weeks because she lied about her due date to not look like she got pregnant after we announced our own pregnancy?'

Just want to share my inner glee at my NSIL (BIL’s wife) getting some well

deserved karma and share it with you guys because I kind of sound like a

jerk when I say to other people who don’t understand Ns that I’m enjoying her misery.

She’s currently “42” weeks pregnant, only she’s not actually because she’s

been lying about her due date to not look like she got pregnant right after

we told her we were pregnant. We told her we were pregnant when I was

12 weeks along and they were the last to know. They had a pretty strange,

kind of pissed off reaction to us telling them. They have no fertility

problems and she said they were waiting 1-2 years to have kids because

they had relationship issues to work out with a counselor before bringing

kids into the mix. They got married quickly. She said she was using the

fertility awareness method to prevent and that i was unnecessarily

poisoning myself with birth control.

This woman shamed me for using birth control, shamed me for having a

hospital birth, shamed me for a c section, sent me anti-a__rtion videos

while pregnant, plagiarized my Instagram posts, “claimed” baby names,

sent out baby shower invites by text right after she found out I mailed

mine and has just been an overall ass.

So now she’s in her 42nd week of being pregnant and still going ahead with

her homebirth because she thinks hospitals are bad. Everyone has been

bugging them constantly for the past two weeks and she’s worried she will

need to be induced. All of this because she won’t admit that they

conceived after we announced! So it’s a bit amusing seeing her deal with

the consequences of her lies and get stressed and having people bug her

about having the baby. I’m sure the N part of her likes the attention but

also she’s squirming because she wants her birth plan to be perfect and

Instagram worthy but it doesn’t look like that will happen.

* I really hope the baby and her are healthy and she gets to go ahead with

her ideal birth plan but I’m enjoying her having to go through a waiting

game after all the crap she put me through. She also shamed me for not

going to her baby shower when my baby was in the nicu.

Sometimes the feeling of “karma” is less about wanting someone to suffer and more about finally seeing a person face consequences they once seemed determined to avoid.

That distinction matters in this story because the narrator is not celebrating the possibility of harm to the mother or baby.

The satisfaction comes from watching someone who repeatedly judged another woman’s choices discover that pregnancy and childbirth do not always cooperate with carefully curated expectations.

The emotional core is resentment built through repeated boundary violations.

The NSIL criticized contraception, birth choices, delivery method, and abortion while apparently competing over pregnancies, baby names, showers, and social-media narratives.

Being shamed during such an intimate period can make every subsequent event feel personal.

Her current frustration therefore becomes symbolic: the narrator is watching someone who insisted that her own approach was superior encounter circumstances she cannot completely control.

There is a more interesting psychological angle, though. The narrator’s pleasure may not be about the pregnancy at all.

It may be about restored fairness. When someone repeatedly makes another person feel inadequate, seeing that person lose control of the image they carefully constructed can temporarily reverse the power dynamic.

The satisfaction says, “You were never as superior as you made yourself seem.”

Still, there is one boundary worth keeping firm: pregnancy complications should not become the vehicle for revenge.

Going past the expected delivery date can involve legitimate medical considerations, and decisions about induction or home birth should be handled with qualified medical professionals rather than social pressure or family expectations.

The narrator does not need to root for a bad outcome to recognize the irony.

Perhaps the healthiest version of this “karma” is simply letting reality teach the lesson.

Pregnancy does not guarantee an Instagram-perfect experience, and choosing a different medical path does not make someone morally superior.

The narrator has already learned that trying to win the comparison game only keeps the other person occupying emotional space.

She can enjoy the irony, hope for a healthy mother and child, and then quietly step out of the competition.

Sometimes that is the most satisfying form of karma available.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters joked that NSIL would need an absurdly long pregnancy to make her story believable

geezluise − how long will that work though? when you were three months

pregnant they conceived? will she carry to 64 weeks? 🤪

ysabelsrevenge − Well that is hilarious. I can’t wait to hear her explain to

everyone ‘oh they’re letting me go longer, they don’t induce before 44

weeks these days. ..’ May she push out a 10 pounder ;)

kjungyrl1966 − Ask her if she's an elephant in disguise since their gestation

periods are between 18-22 months and see what she says.

This group found the pregnancy claims suspicious and compared them with other bizarre examples of fake or exaggerated pregnancies

Momof3dragons2012 − Reminds me of a Facebook drama I was fortunate

enough to witness. Chick claimed she was pregnant with quints. QUINTS.

As in five babies. Posted pictures of her pregnant belly that was clearly a

salad bowl under a shirt. Bragged about all the donations and such.

When someone commented that her pregnant belly looked fake she

posted another with her shirt flipped up and her stomach pushed way out-

still didn’t look pregnant, especially with 5 babies. Anyway, she was due in

March she claimed, but yet in April she was still pregnant. Claimed that you

were pregnant longer with multiples or some such s__t.

Apparently didn’t realize that eventually she’d actually have to have these

babies, you can’t be fake pregnant forever, ammirite? So she’s like a month

overdue. With quints. And people are basically harassing her at this point,

trying to make her admit she was lying. But nope, she’s Miss. Double-Down

and says her OB planned her C-Section for Easter Sunday.

Because that is something that is done (it isn’t. No OB would plan a c

section on a weekend let alone a holiday). So Easter rolls round and I

eagerly return to see how she handled her fake c section.

She puts out a long post about how all the babies were stillborn, how she

didn’t see any of them, and she just left them at the hospital for them to

deal with (this was on a Monday and she was home already). Two weeks

later she announces that she is pregnant again, this time with twins.

At this point my evens can’t even so I nope the F out of there. It wasn’t fun

anymore, just infuriating. Especially since someone in our group had

actually had her baby stillborn.

endlesscartwheels − I hope, for the baby's sake, that she really is lying. She

might be so into the natural woo (and have a midwife who is as well) that

she won't be induced, and a baby who could have been born alive at 42

weeks will be a sad story a few weeks later.

These commenters believed jealousy and competition motivated NSIL to imitate or overshadow OP’s pregnancy

YouShotMelanieYUP − She’s sooooooooo insecure about you. She’s

terrified that you’re going to outshine her.

AxalonNemesis − My sympathy. My cousin got pregnant as soon as my

mom went behind our back and announced we were expecting. The jealousy is real.

CopiousGoats − Omg b*tch be crazy, makes my crazy SIL seem like a cake

walk. Their first kid was born 10 months after my son. Even though they

said they didn't want to have kids for 4-5 years they "accidentally" got

pregnant the month my son was born.

My brother later eluded to the fact that she was jealous of all the attention

I was getting for being pregnant.

She had the baby shower before the baby came, I assume so all the

attention would be on her, because they didn't need a shower since she's

such a compulsive shopper and had everything they needed, she ended up

returning half the gifts because she had already bought them. ... Even

though she left them on her registry.

... Side note: when they found out it was a boy she was DEVASTATED. Like

truly devastated. My brother couldn't even talk about the baby for 2

months without her getting pissed off. All she did was complain about all

the cute clothes and accessories she can't buy because they're having a boy.

.. Because she obviously wanted a dress up doll and not an actual F__king

human baby. Baby #2, was allegedly on purpose, probably because it was a

girl. But all she does is complain about how she shouldn't have had two

under two. BUT THEN, even though she regrets having two under two she's

"accidentally" pregnant with baby #3. So she'll have 3 under 4..

..but she Won't go to the doctor to confirm because she is confident that

there's no point since they'll just tell her that her due date is Feb 5 and she

already knows that. ... Interesting for someone to be so confident in a birth

date for an accidental pregnancy. .. But she pales in comparison to OPs. ..

Many patient thoughts your way cuz wow.

These commenters highlighted the birth-control shaming, copied ideas, baby-name competition, and other intrusive behavior as major red flags

KeeperofAmmut7 − She said she was using the fertility awareness method

to prevent and that i was unnecessarily poisoning myself with birth control.

Obviously, THAT worked. /s This woman shamed me for using birth control,

shamed me for having a hospital birth, shamed me for a c section, sent me

anti-a__rtion videos while pregnant, huh?

plagiarized my Instagram posts, “claimed” baby names, sent out baby

shower invites by text right after she found out I mailed mine and has just

been an overall ass. Arse isn't the word, I would use. You could always ask

her if she's a horse or a dolphin or a giraffe because that's their gestations. ..just to be a troll.

You really DO gotta love when Jno's F themselves.

brokencappy − Why does she know so much about you? ? She would have

been blocked and banned after the words 'a__rtion video'.

After months of judgment, competition, and hurtful comments from her NSIL, the OP admits she is finding some satisfaction in watching the carefully managed image of the “perfect” pregnancy become increasingly difficult to maintain.

At the same time, she makes it clear that she still hopes both mother and baby remain healthy.

Some readers may understand enjoying a little karma, while others may feel the baby’s wellbeing should make the situation impossible to celebrate.

Is OP justified in feeling this way after everything she endured, or is she letting resentment take over? Share your thoughts below.
