Mother-In-Law Acts Like She Runs The Family, Until Her Son Finally Tells Her To Back Off

in Social Issues

Having grandparents involved in raising children can be a wonderful source of support, but there’s a fine line between offering help and taking control.

Occasional advice might come from a place of concern, yet constant criticism can leave parents feeling as though every decision they make is being judged. And when a relative insists on supervising everything, even an ordinary family outing can become exhausting.

One Redditor knows this frustration all too well. Her mother-in-law regularly attends her children’s swimming lessons, but instead of enjoying the activity, she finds reasons to question the OP’s parenting choices. From school drop-offs to snacks and clothing, seemingly nothing escapes her scrutiny.

For years, the woman’s husband encouraged her to overlook his mother’s behavior to maintain family harmony. However, a recent series of complaints pushed the situation further than usual. Keep reading to discover what finally changed in this family’s long-standing dynamic.

A mother grows frustrated as her mother-in-law constantly criticizes her parenting choices

'MIL acts like she is the manager of our family and my husband finally let her have it!'

My MIL came to my kids’ swimming lesson this week as per usual and immediately told me my 4-year-old was “too skinny” and “it’s not good.”

Then she repeatedly told me my 6-year-old should be wearing goggles, as she does every swim lesson even though she knows he refuses to wear them.

Her criticism even extended to the instructors and, in the past, other parents.

Woman, I just want to relax after a long day and watch the kids swim without listening to your stream of criticisms!. That was just the beginning.

I casually mentioned our Thursday school drop-off situation because I was proudly sharing how my 6-year-old is growing in independence.

Normally I drop my daughter off first, then take my son to his school and walk him to his class line up.

On Thursdays my daughter starts later, so I have to drop him off first.

If I park, get both kids out and walk him all the way to his line, my daughter will be late.

So on these days I use his school’s kiss-and-ride curb drop-off instead. He actually loves it and is proud of being able to walk in himself.

MIL ripped into me. She said he’s too young, that I’m irresponsible and that someone could lure him away and kidnap him with Pokémon cards.

She announced that SHE would start taking him to school on Wednesdays and asked where my husband was.

When I said he was usually home, she said she’d call him and “give him s__t.”

Then swimming ended. My son had swum his heart out and came out saying he was hungry.

MIL immediately criticized me for not feeding him enough beforehand. I HAD given him a snack.

I deliberately don’t give him a large amount immediately before swimming because he’s vomited in the pool

when he’s eaten too much beforehand. Plus, our schedule was to go home and have dinner.

Afterward, she privately called my husband and claimed our son had started swimming “sloppily” at the end because he was so hungry.

That wasn’t even true. She then announced that she’d start coming to our house after school to make sure the kids got snacks.

The next day, she called my husband AGAIN to complain about my school drop-off arrangement.. This isn’t just about my parenting either.

Recently we took my husband’s 50-year-old sister on vacation. SIL had a kidney transplant and was finally medically cleared to travel.

The night before we left, MIL pulled me aside and instructed me to strictly monitor everything SIL ate because SIL gets angry

when MIL tells her what she can and can’t eat.. She also instructed me to report back to her every day about SIL, my kids and the trip overall..

SIL is a mentally competent adult and TEN YEARS OLDER THAN ME.

Another example: we go to a fishing lodge together every year where my husband and FIL fish most of the day while I’m with MIL and the kids.

One year, knowing what she’s like, my husband actually warned her beforehand not to spend the trip constantly criticizing me as she usually does..

Surprisingly, she didn’t.

I later found out that every evening when I went to put the kids to bed, she privately unloaded all of her criticisms about me onto my husband instead.

She also regularly texts me instructions about the kids: whether it’s safe to be outside, how I should dress them, or if I share photos in the group chat,

if I’m letting them be unsafe (for example allowing my son to climb monkey bars that are too high). Once when my husband was away for work,

she became extremely anxious because I wasn’t regularly checking in with her about myself and the kids.

I’d literally sent the group chat a video of the kids skating that morning,

but she still complained to my husband that I was being “distant” until he called me begging me to contact her because she was so anxious.

I’m 40. She’s not my mother. Yet I constantly feel like she’s appointed herself the manager/authority figure of my household.

I’ve started realizing that the common thread in all of this is her anxiety and her apparent need to manage everyone around her.

She sees something that concerns her, decides something is wrong, tells everyone how it should be handled and, if we don’t do it her way,

frequently appoints herself to take over. She seems to conflate her helping (for example occasional babysitting or school pick up)

with having the right to give unsolicited advice and exercise parental authority. She even did this with our nanny when we had one.

My husband fully recognizes that she oversteps, but historically his response has been, “That’s just Mom. You have to ignore her. We all do.”

At the same time, he’s spent his whole life accommodating her to keep the peace.

If she gets anxious enough, sometimes he’ll ask me to humour her so that she’ll calm her down.

I’ve realized that this family has basically spent decades managing her anxiety.

She worries, starts managing everyone around her, and everyone accommodates her so she’ll feel better.

Except this time, after the swimming lesson and the SECOND phone call complaining about me, my husband finally snapped!!

He told her she is constantly criticizing me and that it’s one thing for him to receive it, but I’m his wife and he’s watching how much it upsets me.

Then he said, “She’s a new mom and she wanted to be a mom so badly, and you’re not letting her.”

He told her that she may have more parenting experience, (take with a grain of salt, as back in the day

when my husband was a toddler she’d  give him Coca Cola in a milk bottle cuz he loved Coke until all his baby teeth turned black)

but she needs to step back and give me the chance to actually be the mother of my own children.

He compared her constant criticism to me getting all dressed up for a date with him, coming downstairs excited,

and having him look at me and immediately tell me I’m ugly.. Then he set an actual boundary: she was no longer invited to Wednesday swimming.

He would go instead.. Her response?. “Who’s going to shower the kids?”. ME.. I shower the kids.

She stands beside me and only helps by getting one of them dressed afterward.. She then accused us of being ungrateful for all her help..

She was apparently muttering under her breath but had nothing she could retaliate with. That’s how the convo ended.

In her mind, she is indispensable. She then conflates her “help” with having parental authority which includes giving unsolicited (and often bad) advice..

But here’s the part I found most interesting.

We saw her later that evening. It was slightly awkward, but she gave me ZERO unsolicited advice or criticism.

We actually had a completely normal conversation about random things.. So apparently she CAN control it.

Anyway, after years of “that’s just Mom, ignore her,” my husband finally stopped asking me to tolerate it and set a firm boundary with her..

Now I’m VERY curious to see what happens next.

There is a point when “help” stops feeling like help and starts feeling like supervision. Most people can appreciate advice from family, especially when it comes from genuine concern, but constant correction can leave someone feeling as though they are never trusted to manage their own life.

That seems to be what happened to the OP. Her MIL criticized everything from the children’s weight and swimming habits to school drop-offs, snacks, clothing, outdoor play, and even the nanny’s work. She extended the same controlling instinct to her adult daughter, instructing the OP to monitor what the woman ate after a kidney transplant.

Even when the OP followed reasonable parenting decisions, MIL continued looking for something to correct. The exhausting part was not one comment. It was the cumulative message: you cannot be trusted to handle your own family without me.

A different psychological perspective is that controlling behavior does not always begin with a desire for power. Sometimes anxiety creates an intense need to reduce uncertainty. If someone believes that something might go wrong, taking over the situation can temporarily make them feel safer.

The problem is that their relief comes at another person’s expense. Concern becomes criticism, criticism becomes instructions, and instructions eventually become interference.

Psychotherapist Robert Taibbi, L.C.S.W., who has extensive clinical experience working with family relationships, describes this pattern through the concept of enmeshment, where emotional boundaries become blurred and people become excessively reactive to one another.

He explains that anxiety can drive people to become hypervigilant about others, creating a cycle in which one person’s worry leads to controlling behavior while everyone else learns to accommodate that anxiety.

That description fits the family dynamic remarkably well. For years, everyone appears to have adjusted their behavior around MIL’s anxiety.

Her husband accommodated her. Her son tried to keep the peace. The OP was repeatedly encouraged to “ignore” her. Even when MIL became distressed because the OP did not check in often enough, the solution was apparently for everyone else to reassure her.

Psychology Today similarly notes that healthy family boundaries require recognizing where one person’s responsibilities end and another’s begin, while clear limits can actually protect relationships rather than damage them.

This is why the husband’s response matters more than simply telling his mother off. He finally stopped treating her anxiety as something his wife was obligated to manage. His boundary was specific: MIL would no longer attend Wednesday swimming. He also challenged the underlying assumption that experience as a parent gave her authority over another adult’s children.

Interestingly, her immediate change afterward may be the most revealing detail. Once the boundary was established, she was apparently capable of spending an entire evening with the OP without criticizing or instructing her. That does not prove every previous behavior was consciously manipulative, but it does show that different behavior was possible.

The OP’s husband may therefore have discovered something his family had spent decades avoiding: keeping someone calm is not the same as keeping a family healthy. Sometimes accommodation preserves peace only by transferring the emotional cost to someone else.

A boundary does not have to mean rejection. It can simply mean, “I love you, but this part of my life is mine to manage.”

And perhaps that is the real turning point here. MIL does not need to become less caring. She needs to learn that caring for her family does not require managing them.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These Redditors recognized the controlling MIL dynamic and praised the husband for finally pushing back

UnionOk2156 − God thank you for posting this because I didn't think anyone else had the dynamic I had with my MIL it's hard to describe

but it's almost exactly like yours and most of it is so asinine and seemingly "little" you start to feel crazy for pointing it out.

Id hear about mother in laws doing these blatantly horrid things and think well it's not THAT bad. But notice I am speaking in past tense?

I finally had enough I sent her a long text with all my grievances. We haven't spoken or seen the in laws in 2 years since my text.

Sometimes I think it was harsh but it was necessary my husband is in full support and our marriage is a million times better now.

I didn't send the text until I knew he was fed up too. Wishing you a husband who fully supports you as well it's the only way through it.

BombeBon − Sounds like MIL wants to be mommy. .. Glad hubs has a shiny spine, long may it stay strong.

These users urged OP to set firm boundaries and shut down criticism immediately

madpeachiepie − "I'm dropping the kids off on Thursday! " "No you're not, sit down," "I'm going to go criticize the swimming coach! "

"No you're not, sit down. " "From now on, I'M in charge of snacks! " "No. You are not. Sit tf down. "

This is how you make her stop. It's good that your husband finally opened his mouth and spoke, but you also need to do that.

OrneryPost9446 − Proud of your husband. You did very well too. Good job op.   Now please learn to stand up for yourself.

She won't criticize you in front of him anymore but do it covertly. Its important for you to answer back intelligently when she does that.   -

Your son is skinny "He is the perfect size. Do not criticize his body again"

MargaritaMistress − Listen I get letting our husbands handle their mothers, I really do. And he did a good job, finally. But girl.

You are 40 and the mom. You are the manager of your family. It is okay to stick up for yourself too!

You don’t have to sit there and listen to her b__lshit to “keep the peace”.

You can absolutely say, nicely, what you need to. “MIL please stop criticizing everything, if like to sit here and watch the kids”.

“MIL I am their mother, not you, please stop disrespecting me by implying I am a bad mother.

I feed my children enough and no one cares about their safety more than me.” Find your backbone girl, and don’t be afraid to use it!

Immediate_Remote_546 − She’s doing it because she’s allowed to. As I’m getting older, I’m seeing this dynamic in so many families.

Going forward, stop her mid sentence every single time. And put your hand up in the stop sign. ✋

I’ve got it mil. It’s covered mil. I’m aware mil. Please stop mil.

And change the subject or step away, or end the call or leave her home etc etc. Just stop her in her tracks every time. If you give an inch,...

These commenters recommended giving MIL less information and spending far less time around her

sherahero − Why is she so involved in your lives? She needs an immediate info diet. Stop giving her ammunition.

DangerousGodess − You need to spend way less time with her. Like why is she even there when you bathe your own children?

This user warned that MIL’s criticism could seriously affect the children’s confidence and body image

cuppin_in_the_hottub − Hey OP, I commented this in a comment thread and just wanted to post it as a stand alone comment too so you hopefully see it.

Your children are going to be messed up if this is allowed to continue.

Your MIL is criticizing your parenting by pointing out ways that your children are lacking somehow. Too skinny. Not capable enough.

What they are proud of is wrong. They can’t think for themselves/no way is right except hers/gma says…

She might not mean it that way but it isn’t a stretch to think of how her comments and criticisms might land

to a vulnerable and confused kid (even if they aren’t directed at them).

The person who responded to my comment talked about the body image issues and life threatening ED they developed

because of being exposed to this kind of talk about their body. Too skinny. Too fat.

Can’t be trusted to eat correctly and need to be supervised. You don’t comment or criticize people’s bodies.

They should be kids and not worried about being all wrong in every way.

Because even when we don’t think little ears are listening, we are wrong. They understand so much more than we realize.

She is passing on her anxiety to the rest of the family and it can have major long-term consequences if not stopped now.

Try and understand this/get your husband to understand this.

Imagine being your kid and listening to your GMA yell at your mom saying you can’t handle drop off, lining up on your own,

which is something you’re proud of, that everything your mom is excited and proud of you for growing bigger and learning to do by yourself is wrong.

It’s not something to be proud of anymore, it’s to be ashamed of because it hurt GMA and made her worry…

you just need to not do anything she doesn’t want you to so your mom won’t get yelled at anymore. Nope. Just no.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you talked to your kids they say some unsettling things about GMA and how they feel around her.

And if they don’t yet they will pretty soon if this is allowed to continue.

This commenter questioned why the behavior had been tolerated for so long

Ordinary-Spell8657 − Ok I’m sorry, I have to say it: why did you and your husband allow for this to go on for so long?

My MIL tried this crap with me ONCE and I put her in her place immediately.

She has given me snarky comments here and there over the past 20 years, and meet her with the same amount of snarkiness.

What is going on out there with yall? !?!? I’m concerned.

Should the husband have intervened years earlier, or was his mother simply expressing concern in an overbearing way? And would removing her from swimming lessons help establish a healthier family dynamic?
