She Refused to Add a Stranger to Her First Anniversary Trip After Divorce, and Her Sister Got Offended

After leaving a difficult marriage, a quiet getaway can mean much more than just a few days away.

Sometimes, you need a trip where you can finally relax, drink too much wine, enjoy your own music, and celebrate getting through a chapter of your life without having to accommodate everyone else.

OP planned a long weekend around what would have been her tenth wedding anniversary, hoping to turn a painful date into something positive after her divorce.

Her sister initially wanted to join with her teenage daughters, so OP tried to accommodate them despite paying for the entire trip.

After making several adjustments, she finally found a place that worked and thought the plans were settled.

Then her sister revealed that her daughters wanted to bring a friend, putting OP in an awkward position.

When OP said no, the disagreement became much bigger than expected.

Scroll down to see why the family ended up divided over a single extra guest.

A newly divorced woman plans a paid getaway for herself, but her sister expects her to accommodate an extra teenager she barely knows

'AITA for refusing to let my nieces bring a friend on a trip I’m paying for, even after they threatened not to come?'

I divorced earlier this year. It was a bad relationship and very rough to

leave. Over the summer, I told my sister (Ann) that I planned a long

weekend getaway over what would’ve been my 10th wedding anniversary.

She said it sounded fun and that she and her two daughters (13 and 15)

would come too since it aligned with their school break.

I sent options, but later when I asked about logistics, Ann said they might

only make it for an afternoon because they were "too busy." To

accommodate them, I tried finding a place closer to them, but everything

closer was way out of my budget (I am paying for everything). Because of

this, I told Ann I was reverting to my original plan of a solo trip further

away. I said if I found a place that happened to fit them I'd book it, but I

wouldn't prioritize it. She said fine.

I ended up finding a cute, dog-friendly place with just enough beds. I

booked it and let her know. I woke up yesterday to a text from Ann saying

the kids want to bring a friend, and that she told them she had to run it by

me first since I'm paying.

I texted back saying no. A random kid I don't know isn't welcome on my

first anniversary-post-divorce getaway, and it was rude to ask. Ann claimed

my text hurt her feelings. I called her to talk it out. She told me I was being

hurtful, that she "always wants her kids' friends around", and I can't

understand because I don't have teenagers.

I reiterated that I’m planning on drinking a LOT of wine, hiking, hot-

tubbing, and listening to uncensored music. An extra kid makes that

inappropriate. I also told her she shouldn't have put the onus on me by

telling my nieces it was "my call"—she should have just parented and said

no, especially since I'm footing the bill for them.

Ann then threatened that maybe they won't come because it would be

"awkward." I replied, "That's fine, you can stay home, no hard feelings." She

then laid into me about how hurtful I was being... when I was literally just

accepting her choice.

My mom says she "sees both sides" and wants me to apologize to keep the

peace. I think that's ridiculous. Parents of teenagers, please set me straight

if I'm wrong. AITA?

After a difficult chapter ends, people often need one small stretch of life that belongs entirely to them.

OP’s getaway was not merely a vacation; it was deliberately planned as a marker of independence after a painful divorce.

The conflict becomes understandable when the changing expectations are considered.

Ann initially said she and her daughters would come, then suggested they might only stay for an afternoon.

OP adjusted plans, searched for more affordable options, and ultimately returned to the original idea of a solo trip.

When she later found a suitable place with limited beds and invited Ann’s family, that invitation came with an obvious practical boundary: the available space was for the people already discussed.

Asking to add an unfamiliar teenager was therefore not a minor logistical adjustment. It changed the character of the trip OP had planned and was paying for.

A different perspective is that Ann may genuinely see bringing friends as normal teenage-family life.

For parents of teenagers, having a friend tag along can feel almost automatic, especially during school breaks.

But familiarity with that arrangement does not give Ann the authority to assume someone else will finance it.

More importantly, OP had explicitly explained that this particular trip involved alcohol, hiking, hot-tubbing, and private adult downtime.

Her refusal was therefore about context, not dislike of the teenager.

She simply declined to add another guest. When Ann responded that perhaps they would stay home, OP accepted that decision without threatening, insulting, or guilt-tripping her.

The subsequent accusation that OP was being hurtful seems to come from the emotional meaning Ann attached to the boundary rather than from anything particularly hostile OP did.

There is also something important about the phrase “keep the peace.” Families sometimes use it when one person is uncomfortable with another person’s perfectly reasonable limit.

But preserving peace should not automatically mean making the person who established the boundary surrender it.

In this case, OP already made substantial accommodations before booking the trip.

The practical answer is fairly simple: OP does not owe an apology for refusing an additional guest on a trip she is organizing and paying for.

If Ann decides not to attend because the friend cannot come, that is her choice.

After surviving a difficult marriage and divorce, OP deserves a weekend where she does not have to manage someone else’s disappointment.

Sometimes protecting a new beginning means allowing another adult to be unhappy with a perfectly reasonable “no.”

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters strongly favor the original plan: this was intended as a personal post-divorce getaway

Fast_Ad7203 − The way i would go alone and disinvite their ungrateful

asses, this isnt their trip its YOURS Go alone and enjoy your time, you

divorced a whole woman a little conflict with your sister isnt gonna do anything to you

Efficient_Actuator84 − NTA "I reiterated that I’m planning on drinking a

LOT of wine, hiking, hot-tubbing, and listening to uncensored music. "

Sounds like my kind of party!

everyplanetwereach − Girl what the f__k are you doing with your sister and

two young teens on your FIRST TRIP AFTER A DIVORCE Go have fun and

enjoy your freedom and your solitude and get yours

garden-elf − NTA. Your sister sounds very ungrateful and she doesn’t seem

to be considering how meaningful this trip is for you. Frankly, i think what’s

happening is the kids don’t want to come but bringing along a friend makes

it more enticing for them. Ann wants to go but can’t leave her kids so she’s

trying to compromise. Thats just my guess.

I think instead of reiterating how the trip would be inappropriate, reiterate

that it’s a vulnerable time of healing for you and you don’t want a strange teenager to be there for that.

Suspicious-Grand9781 − Tell her you decided to go by yourself

The main criticism is that the sister wasn’t the person organizing or paying for the trip

FacetiousTomato − NTA Sister is being selfish and has seemingly zero ability

to see this from another person's perspective. This isn't her trip to invite

people on. It is your trip. If she wants to come, she and her daughters are

welcome. If she wants her daughters friends to be welcome, she can take them on her own trip.

Thesnowbelow − NTA - I don't know why someone who is being treated to

a getaway feels entitled to add people to the guest list. You are entirely

right that she should have parented and said no from the beginning as it

was completely unfair to put that answer on you.

If she were paying for part of the trip I could understand asking but this is

not cool. Your sister sounds super ungrateful. If I were you, I would

absolutely book the solo trip and enjoy some you time, drinking copious

amounts of wine and relaxing.

NormativeTruth − So first she invites herself and doesn’t offer to pay for

herself and her lids and then she gets mad when you say no to an

additional kid you don’t even know. All while still expecting you to pay for

everything. Why did she even ask then? Ann sounds like a nightmare. I’d

keep her at a distance after I return from my SOLO trip.

catskilkid − NTA It was always YOUR trip. Your sister invited herself from

the beginning KNOWING this was a YOU trip and if she did not know your

plans, then she had no business inviting herself. The adding of her kids

friend without asking you first was as you said BAD PARENTING.

Your mother can say she sees both sides, but that would result in her

recognizing your sister is wrong to have invited herself and then

bootstrapped a kids friend invitation. Seem like your sister wanted YOU to

pay for a vacation for her and her kids and the friend would have made it

easier on HER to deal with her own kids.

None of which is related to your therapeutical vacation plans. Your sister

not only is the AH, but your mother double proves it thinking that saying

she can see both sides, but wants YOU to appologize that your Sister is her

favorite and your mother is is an AH as well.

Several commenters dislike the mother’s “I can see both sides” approach

GimmieDatCooch − NTA - f__k “keeping the peace”. Your mom also needs

to b__t out if all she’s going to do is enable your selfish sisters wishes.

Remind her and everyone that this is YOUR trip.

Anon_please123 − NTA. So, your sister is the golden child, right? Reading

this, your sister is completely self absorbed, entitled, and is not the kind of

loving support you need during a tough time. Like why TF would you care if

she wants her kids friends around, that has nothing to do with supporting

YOU, which is the purpose of the trip!

Text her "Sis, I'm feeling pretty hurt that you have turned a trip about my

healing into all about you and the girls. I was trying to be kind including

you, but I can see now that you're not understanding that the trip is

suppose to me about supporting ME after a tough year.

Since you'll only come if the girls bring their friends, then it definitely

would be best for me to go alone. If you want to plan a separate family trip

with the kids and their friends, I'd love to join along another time. Love you, thanks for understanding! "

OP planned this getaway as a personal milestone after a difficult divorce, paid for the entire trip, and had already adjusted the original plan to accommodate her sister.

When Ann later asked to add a teenager OP didn’t know, refusing was a reasonable boundary, especially given the drinking, hot tub, hiking, and desire for privacy.

Ann was free to decline the trip, but OP accepting that decision wasn’t an attack.

Do you think OP owes her sister an apology, or should Ann respect the boundaries of a trip she isn’t paying for? Share your take below.
