Fiancé Skips Woman’s Birthday Dinner to Play Video Games, Then Blames Her for Not Cooking and Cleaning

Every relationship experiences disagreements, but how couples handle disappointment can reveal a great deal about their communication and emotional expectations. Birthdays often make those differences especially noticeable because people may have strong hopes about feeling valued by their partners.

When one person believes they’ve consistently made an effort to celebrate the other, a lack of similar consideration can feel deeply personal. Add unresolved arguments, work stress, and competing priorities, and even a seemingly minor disagreement can escalate into something much bigger.

One Redditor found herself facing that situation after a birthday she had hoped would be memorable for happier reasons. What started as an argument over a dress zipper gradually became part of a larger conflict involving missed plans, disappointing gifts, household responsibilities, and her fiancé’s explanations for his behavior.

The OP also felt hurt by differences between how they had celebrated each other’s birthdays. With communication breaking down, she began wondering whether her feelings were reasonable. Read on to discover why this argument left her feeling so confused about their relationship.

A woman questions her engagement after her fiancé skips her birthday dinner and blames her for their fight

not the actual photo

'fiancé and i had our worst fight ever; i’m befuddled'

yesterday was my birthday and it did not start well. my work dress had a side zipper that zips up near my armpit.

i ask fiance to help me with it because it’s in such an odd angle for me. while he’s attempting to help the zipper pinches my skin.

hurts not fun. then he does it again and i’m like ouch wtf and get upset. he raises his voice at me.

i hate being yelled at so i immediately start crying, saying why would you yell at me/ it’s my birthday this morning.

he storms out. takes the dog on a walk. i gather myself, finish getting ready, and go to work. never see him or my dawg again that morning.

he says nothing to me all day. i get off work, come home to change before my birthday dinner,

and, oddity, my dog isn’t home which has never happened before. i call him and he’s says our dog had a vet appointment and they were wrapping up.

end call.. i head over to the restaurant. he never shows. i make the most of it with my friend.

come home, crickets. i open a few presents/ cards from him and family. he did not get me what i asked for: a pair of sneakers & a close by...

instead he got me some flowers, a robe that was certainly a choice, and a cooking thermometer.

im further aggravated because for his bday i got him three pairs of nice shoes

and a vacation so we spent his birthday at a nice resort halfway across the country.

whole time im opening presents i hear him giggling away in the background playing video games with his friends.

i read something in his card about loving my cooking and i think i see red.

unfortunately in my state i confront him. im not the yelling type but i raise my voice airing out my grievances.

starting with the beginning of the week where he told me right before it was time to leave that he’d just meet me at my nephew’s bday party.

an hour or so into the party he said he wasn’t coming. really sucked telling a six year old that his uncle wasn’t coming anymore

after initially telling the kid he was on his way… when i got home from the party he was not home.

turns out he went to his parents house. by the time i go to bed (starting a new job the next day) he’s not back.

unfortunately i woke up sick the next morning and proceeded to remain sick for the majority of the week.

so i don’t address my grievance with him because every night after work i would crash because of how icky i felt.

background aside i lay all of this out and everything is argument from him. my nephew’s party: he had to catch up on work,

(no adequate response to my rebuttal of why did you have time to spend hours at yours parents house but not stop by the child’s bday party).

bday morning: i should have helped him more with the dress yada yada. missing my birthday dinner to play video games:

you never told me i was invited (spoiler alert i did invite him).

hosting his cousin’s bday party: it’s not that big of a deal; it won’t take too much time (mind you this party

i told him i did not want to host on the same weekend as my birthday. i explicitly told him i want to go out of town and celebrate my...

we went to his favorite band’s concert the week prior and he said he didn’t have money for a weekend trip for me after getting an airbnb & food for...

he proceeds to lament on how stressful work has been for him and how i have not been a good partner this week

because i haven’t been cleaning, cooking, and taking care of the dawg like normal. more is said but that’s the main guist of the argument from hell.

it’s been 24 hours since and we have not spoken one word to each other.

extra ticked because i saw he went out today and bought new equipment for his PS5 that def costed more than my bday gift.

im only pocket watching because of how much i heard i don’t have money for your birthday; that overnight concert trip last week

was ur bday gift ( i seriously don’t know how a man’s favorite band is his lady’s bday gift but ALRIGHT)

anywho ladies i think he’s cruel right now but i am also sensitive to it all. pls tell me if im being ridiculous but is it that hard to

idk just apologize when you do something wrong? im having a really hard time imagining a world

where i would do any of that to him ESPECIALLY on his birthday.

i apologize for the rambling. not sure how coherent my ramblings are but it feels good airing it out.

if u read this far, i appreciate you. dinner is homemade pizza with prosciutto and basil

hi everyone. dog is safe, fine, and generally a happy boy. dog had his last round of shots because he’s a puppy.

he went to the last appointment and made the one this week without consulting me on the date beforehand/ adding to the shared calendar. therefore i forgot

Sometimes, the most heartbreaking part of a relationship isn’t a dramatic betrayal, but realizing that someone who once made a person feel special no longer seems interested in making them feel important. Birthdays often magnify that pain because they represent a simple emotional expectation: being remembered, appreciated, and celebrated by someone who claims to love them.

For this woman, the disappointment wasn’t merely about receiving a cooking thermometer instead of sneakers or a hiking trip. It was an accumulation of moments when her fiancé appeared unwilling to prioritize her. He missed her nephew’s birthday party, raised his voice after accidentally hurting her, disappeared for much of her birthday, and failed to attend her dinner.

When she finally expressed her frustration, his response reportedly centered on defending himself and criticizing her reduced household contributions while she was sick. The birthday became a painful reminder of an imbalance she had perhaps been overlooking.

Yet there’s another perspective worth considering. Her fiancé may be experiencing genuine occupational stress, financial anxiety, or emotional exhaustion.

Some people withdraw into familiar activities, such as gaming, when they feel overwhelmed. However, the distinction between needing personal space and repeatedly abandoning shared responsibilities matters. Stress can explain emotional withdrawal without making its consequences acceptable.

Psychologist and relationship researcher Dr. John Gottman describes everyday requests for attention, affection, and reassurance as emotional bids. According to his research, relationships grow stronger when partners consistently acknowledge these attempts to connect.

Ignoring them can gradually weaken emotional security, even when no single incident appears particularly serious. Gottman found that couples who remained married in a six-year follow-up responded positively to approximately 86% of these bids during observed interactions, compared with 33% among couples who later divorced.

His findings highlight how ordinary moments of responsiveness contribute to lasting emotional connection.

This insight explains why the missed dinner may have hurt more than the disappointing presents. She wasn’t necessarily asking for an expensive celebration. She wanted evidence that her happiness mattered. His willingness to spend money on gaming equipment after citing financial limitations likely intensified her impression that her needs were optional.

Interestingly, her anger about the gifts may be easier to express than the deeper fear beneath it: that she is contributing more emotional energy to the relationship than she receives.

Before marriage, the practical priority should be examining whether this imbalance is temporary or recurring. She can identify specific responsibilities, establish expectations for important commitments, and observe whether her fiancé takes accountability through sustained behavioral changes rather than promises alone.

A disappointing birthday can be forgiven. But should someone enter marriage when they already feel consistently alone in maintaining the relationship?

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors felt the fiancé simply does not seem to like or value OP

SirenSavvy − Girl he doesnt like you. Edit to add: thank you for all the awards although i wish it wasnt for something so painful for OP.

sigzag1994 − It sounds like he only likes you for what you do for him, not for who you are. That’s tough. Also why did you keep spelling dog as...

mahogany818 − He doesn't like you very much, does he? He's being mean to you on purpose so that he can be a c__ard

and let you do the hard part of the break up, and he can play the wounded dumped party.

He was irritated that you dared to do things for yourself on your birthday, and you were the centre of attention instead of him.

He's showing you very clearly who he is.

If my partner caught my skin on a zipper when he was helping me get dressed he'd be mortified, apologise profusely and slow down to make sure it didn't happen...

I would suggest throwing the entire man away, starting fresh somewhere by yourself and see how much better your life is for the next 6

or 12 months without a huge gaping a__hole taking up most of your time, energy and money.

PandyBear07 − I mean, it doesn’t seem as if he likes you. Just the overall feeling is bad. I’d seriously think about whether this is what you want for a...

These users urged OP to rethink the relationship before marriage.

Busy-Bus-6267 − This guy is your fiancé? Is this really what you want the rest of your life to look like? Because you still have time to save yourself.

honey_bunny58 − he does not respect you at all, and it is likely a pattern that will continue to repeat. it might be time to rethink things, i’m sorry 💔

chimneyswallow − You know you don't have to live like this, right? Men are not essentials.

iwishiwasatabbycat − Really what are you getting from this relationship? I realize this is a rant, but he sounds terrible

These commenters warned that marriage could make leaving far harder and the behavior may worsen

LawSchoolLoser1 − As a divorce attorney, this man will NOT be fun to divorce, and you will need to divorce him.

If you don’t want to spend like $100k and a year of your life trying to leave him in the future you should leave him now. I know that sucks...

ETA: OP I crept on your profile a little bit, and you seem extremely cool. You can def do WAY better than this loser.

ptheresadactyl − He sounds a lot like my ex husband. Emphasis on ex. This s__t doesn't get better. Please, take my lived experience.

He is selfish now, he's making s__tty excuses to skip out of your family stuff, low effort birthday gifts and skipping your birthday dinner.

Once you get married, he feels like he's in the clear and this behaviour gets so much worse.

I can give you examples of the s__t my ex did, bit trust me, it gets worse.

Would you postpone the wedding after a birthday like this, or give your fiancé another chance to acknowledge what went wrong and make meaningful changes?
