Dallas Cowboys fans are getting desperate. And they are calling for a familiar face: Tony Romo. After a disastrous showing from backup quarterbacks Cooper Rush and Trey Lance during a 34-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, fans are longing for Romo, the former Cowboys QB who hung up his cleats in 2016, to make an unlikely return.
Romo, now a commentator for CBS, was in the broadcast booth for the game alongside Jim Nantz. As Dallas struggled to move the ball, one fan humorously held up a sign that read, “Romo Go In,” prompting Romo to jokingly mime warming up, adding a lighthearted moment to an otherwise dismal afternoon.
Cooper Rush’s performance Sunday did little to comfort fans. With Dak Prescott sidelined indefinitely by a torn hamstring, Rush managed just 45 yards on 23 pass attempts before he was eventually replaced by Trey Lance. Yet, even with Lance, the Cowboys found no rhythm, finishing the game with their lowest passing output in years.

For many fans, the call for Romo signifies more than a wish for his playmaking skills; it’s about recapturing a sense of stability that feels sorely lacking. With the team’s current playoff chances waning, there’s growing sentiment that a major overhaul is on the horizon, starting with head coach Mike McCarthy. Some fans are even pushing for Romo not only to return as a player but potentially as the team’s next head coach.
While Romo’s return may be a fantasy, the Cowboys’ struggles are very real. As owner Jerry Jones faces mounting pressure to address the team’s issues, Cowboys Nation can only hope for a turnaround, even if it means looking back to past legends to inspire future success.
