Dak Prescott’s severe hamstring injury has forced the Dallas Cowboys to make a change at quarterback. With Prescott sidelined for the foreseeable future, Cooper Rush steps back into the starting role. Rush, who led the Cowboys to a 4-1 record when filling in for Prescott in 2022, is being asked once again to guide the offense. But this time, the stakes are even higher.
The Cowboys are struggling at 3-5, facing their toughest challenge yet as they prepare to host the NFC East-leading Philadelphia Eagles. It’s a critical point in the season, and Rush knows he has to deliver.
Stepping In with Confidence
Despite the mounting pressure, Rush is staying true to his approach. The veteran backup is known for his calm demeanor, and he isn’t letting the situation change his process.
“The time [I put in] is pretty much the same,” Rush said. “The week-to-week process is pretty much the same. In practice, you’re obviously getting more reps, doing more things, but it’s exciting. This is why you work. This is why you prepare to go and start.”
Rush believes his experience and familiarity with the team will help him adjust quickly.
“The more games you play, the more reps you bank, put in your library, you draw on those. So, I feel confident in that. Been around here for a while, and played with a lot of these guys before, which is huge when you’re out there with live bullets,” he added. “Trusting those guys and being out there before with them is big.”
Extra Reps with CeeDee Lamb
One of those key players Rush is counting on is star receiver CeeDee Lamb. The two have been putting in extra work together outside of practice, a crucial move given Lamb’s recent injury. The All-Pro receiver is dealing with a sprained AC joint in his shoulder but isn’t letting it slow him down.
“Obviously, we’ve connected,” Lamb said. “We’ve taken a lot of reps outside of practice — just talking, communicating, and getting on the same page. I feel like that’s very important with the situation that’s coming up. I’m happy for him.”
Lamb’s faith in Rush remains strong, and he’s confident his teammate will rise to the occasion.
“We know what Coop can do. The confidence is still there. Just stand in there and deliver,” Lamb added.
A New Challenge Awaits
In 2022, Rush’s job was to keep a strong Cowboys team on track while Prescott recovered. Now, the challenge is different. The Cowboys are fighting to salvage their season, with a disappointing 3-5 record and still searching for their first home win. This upcoming game against the Eagles could be a turning point.
Rush understands the gravity of the situation but remains unfazed. His mindset is focused and simple.
“Yeah, I mean we’re just trying to beat Philly,” Rush said. “I mean it’s kind of our approach this week. You’ve got to take ’em one at a time. It’s a cliché, but it works. And, so, that’s kind of the goal.”
Rush is embracing the opportunity and taking it day by day.
“You’re just really taking it practice by practice, game by game and we’ll see what happens,” he concluded.
A Crucial Test Ahead
The matchup against the Eagles won’t be easy. Philadelphia handed Rush his only loss as a starter back in 2022, and they come into this game on a winning streak. But with a calm approach and extra preparation, Rush is ready to prove he can lead the Cowboys when they need him most.
It’s a fresh challenge for Rush, and he’s taking it head-on, trusting his process and the work he’s put in with his teammates. Now, the stage is set for a pivotal game that could define the Cowboys’ season.
