Dita Von Teese, the iconic “Queen of Burlesque,” has built a groundbreaking career redefining sensuality and femininity on stage.
At 51, she continues to push boundaries and embrace her unique brand of empowerment.
In a recent conversation with Dua Lipa on the At Your Service podcast, Von Teese opened up about her experiences in burlesque, her personal evolution, and the impact of social media on body image.
#1. The Evolution of Burlesque and Von Teese’s Empowering Journey
Over the last 25 years, burlesque has shifted into a movement of inclusivity and diversity, and Von Teese’s performances reflect that change.
“The show I tour with now isn’t just about pinup girls; it includes just as many men performing striptease and as many diverse performers as I can bring,” she shared.
Her career began under what she described as the “male gaze,” but her audience evolved as she began sharing her story.
“By telling my story about why I love burlesque, I saw women resonate with it — about harnessing their erotic and sensual power and living life on their own terms.”
#2. Embracing Taboo and Feminism on Her Own Terms
Von Teese has always leaned into what others might see as taboo, from striptease to fetishism. “There’s power in taking something seen as degrading and saying, ‘I like it because it feels freeing,’” she explained.
For her, feminism is about making personal choices, without bowing to societal pressures or opinions. This sense of empowerment has allowed her to carve out her own lane in the industry, designing performances and costumes that make her feel confident and in control.
#3. Navigating Body Criticism in the Social Media Era
While burlesque has always been bold, the rise of social media has brought new scrutiny, especially around body image.
“In my twenties, before social media, I didn’t worry about things like cellulite or bloating,” Von Teese recalled.
However, she now approaches these criticisms with the confidence that comes with age. “I used to want to be perfect on stage, but now I’ve let go of that. I don’t let small imperfections hold me back. I want to be perfect in other ways.”
Dita Von Teese continues to thrive, proving that true empowerment comes from embracing individuality, challenging societal norms, and confidently owning every stage of life.
