A decade after its release, the sci-fi action film Edge of Tomorrow remains a fan favorite, and a sequel might still be in the cards.
Director Doug Liman recently spoke to Empire magazine about his latest film, The Instigators, but also addressed the long-rumored follow-up to Edge of Tomorrow. While the 2014 movie starring Tom Cruise underperformed at the box office initially, it has gained a cult following over the years.
Liman assures fans that the sequel is not dead. “No, we keep talking about it,” he said, referring to himself and Cruise. We love that world.” He acknowledged the trend of sci-fi sequels taking a long time to develop, referencing James Cameron‘s Terminator sequels.
Interestingly, Liman and Cruise recently rewatched the first Edge of Tomorrow together. “Tom and I just actually rewatched it about two months ago, because I hadn’t seen it in 10 years,” Liman said, expressing his renewed appreciation for the film.
Regardless of whether the sequel happens, Liman is happy with Edge of Tomorrow’s enduring legacy. I haven’t necessarily always had the good fortune of having movies that have huge opening weekends,” he admitted. He cited examples of his other films, The Bourne Identity and Swingers, that had lackluster initial runs.
“What I’ve come to understand is, I’m making movies for the long term,” Liman said. “I’d like to get accolades now, but I also recognise that, if I was given the choice, I’ll choose making films that people 50 years from now are still watching.”
For Edge of Tomorrow fans, that could mean getting to relive (and die and repeat) the franchise in a whole new way.
