Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott is still trying to understand why his role in short-yardage situations has been reduced, especially after being brought back to the team for that exact reason.
In last week’s win against the Steelers, Elliott played 23 snaps, but when it came to important short-yardage plays, like a key moment at the goal line, he stayed on the sidelines. Instead, starter Rico Dowdle took over, finishing the game with a career-high 20 carries for 87 yards.
Elliott, who was re-signed by the Cowboys for his proven ability in these situations, admitted that it’s been hard to sit out during those crucial plays. While he has spoken with the coaches about his role, there hasn’t been a clear answer yet.
“I’ve talked a little bit,” Elliott said. “But kinda letting it play out.”
Elliott said he wants to be on the field in those short-yardage moments but doesn’t know why he hasn’t been used.
“It’s definitely different, but I’m keeping my head down,” Elliott added, staying focused on the team.
Since starting the season-opener in Cleveland, Elliott has been a backup in the last four games, sometimes playing as few as 25 snaps. Fullback Hunter Luepke has actually played more offensive snaps than Elliott this season—112 compared to Elliott’s 108.
Despite all of this, Elliott remains focused on supporting the team and helping them win.
“I just focus on being a good teammate,” Elliott said. “It’s about the team winning games, not about me.”
As the Cowboys push forward in the season, Elliott’s role in the offense will continue to be something to watch closely.
