After more than a decade after the original film brought us on a voyage to Pandora’s wonderland, James Cameron is back with Avatar 2. The brilliant filmmaker returns with the long-awaited sequels, this time focusing on his “lifelong passion for the ocean.”. And, given behind-the-scenes photographs, it’s clear that Cameron is doing everything he can to find out the best approach to portray the Na’vi in a completely new region the open sea. The on-set photos show the underwater shooting technique with gymnasts wearing motion-capture suits, as well as what it appears like it on the human/military aspects.

Cameron is seen in one photo with Edie Falco, who has joined the cast as General Ardmore of the RDA, on what appears to be a military aircraft. At first sight, it appears to be a submarine submerged in water, but the director said, “It appears to be a sub, but it’s really the flight deck of a dragon gunship, which is an airplane we saw in the previous film.”

Another shot demonstrates how difficult working underwater has been. Without any equipment, a cameraman is seen recording underwater alongside gymnasts and dancers wearing motion-capture suits. Cameron stated that the diving bubbles made “too much sound on the performance-capture system,” so they all had to hold their breath.

The other shot shows the producer speaking with actor Jack Champion, who is in the water wearing a breathing mask and surrounded by team personnel. Spider, a human adolescent born on Pandora, is played by the 14-year-old actor. Not only Jack, but all of the performers had to put in a lot of work to prepare for the parts that required them to perform underwater. Sigourney Weaver, 72, who died in the original film and will reprise her part, can hold her breath for 6 and a half minutes.

Cameron will reconnect with Titanic star Kate Winslet, who can hold her breath for nearly seven minutes and will portray the enigmatic Ronal, one of the Metkayina, in the movie. Cameron commented on the filming method, saying, “It sounds sort of weird, the process. We’d never do this if Avatar hadn’t earned so much revenue, because it’s sort of ridiculous.”
