Hilary Swank has always been known for playing tough, unconventional characters. Her grit and determination, which have been evident from her childhood all the way to her current age of 50, suggest that her strength was forged early on.

Even with two Academy Awards to her name, Swank made the choice to step back from Hollywood for three years at the height of her career to care for her ailing father.

#1. A difficult childhood

Hilary Swank was born on July 30, 1974, in Lincoln, Nebraska, and spent much of her early life in a trailer park in Bellingham, Washington. At 15, she left school to pursue her dream of becoming an actress.

While some teachers encouraged her, others were less supportive, which led her to drop out. In 1990, after her parents divorced, Hilary and her mother moved to California to chase her acting career, despite having little money and nowhere to live.

For several weeks, the pair were homeless, sleeping in their car until a friend allowed them to stay in a vacant house at night. With no furniture, they slept on air mattresses and left each morning to give the friend space to show the house to potential buyers.

Despite these challenges, Hilary’s resilience and hard work paid off, leading to roles in various TV shows in the early 1990s and paving the way for her success in Hollywood.

Hilary Swank’s breakout role came when she portrayed a transgender boy in Boys Don’t Cry, a performance that earned her an Oscar and established her as a highly respected actress. Over the years, she has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and two Academy Awards.

Hilary often credits her humble beginnings for keeping her grounded. “My background is not something I forget. It helps me not to take what I have for granted,” she once shared.

She also acknowledges her mother’s unwavering support throughout her journey. When Hilary received her star on the Walk of Fame, she emotionally recalled a moment when her mother, standing at a pay phone, counted quarters to call casting agents in hopes of getting her a role.

#2. Abandoning her career to nurse her ill father back to health

In 2014, Hilary Swank’s father, Stephen Swank, fell seriously ill and underwent a life-threatening surgery. Despite her thriving career, Hilary made the difficult decision to step away from acting to care for him.

The surgery was complicated, and doctors warned that without a lung transplant, Stephen had limited time left. During this challenging period, Hilary became her father’s health advocate, navigating his prolonged and uncertain recovery.

Hilary’s father sadly passed away in October 2021. She shared an emotional tribute on social media, writing, “In October, my Dear Dad made his transition to the other side.”

She expressed that she had “grown incredibly close” to her father during this challenging time, and their bond had deepened. This experience allowed Hilary to let go of past hurts and gain a better understanding of life’s true essence.

#3. Her way back to stardom

Hilary Swank eventually returned to acting, taking on roles that reflected her personal experiences with her father’s health struggles.

Her father’s experience inspired her to choose parts that dealt with themes of aging parents and family caregiving, such as her role in the drama film What They Had.

In 2018, she starred in the FX limited series Trust, and two years later, she appeared in the thriller The Hunt.

#4. Pregnant at 48

Recently, the 48-year-old actress announced that she is expecting and will soon be a mother of twins.

“I’m going to be a mom! And not just of one, but of 2,” the P.S. I Love You star revealed with excitement. She shared her joy at being able to announce the news and expressed deep gratitude to her mother, Judy, who has always believed in her and encouraged her to work hard and never give up.
