The Dallas Cowboys have hit a new low after Monday night’s 34-10 loss to the Houston Texans, marking their fifth straight defeat and dropping them to 3-7 on the season. While speculation mounts about Mike McCarthy’s future, team owner Jerry Jones has made it clear: there will be no coaching changes midseason.
“I have made a change early on a coach with Chan Gailey, and I’ve always regretted that, and I’ve made a change during the season [with Wade Phillips] and regretted that,” Jones reiterated, referencing decisions from past decades.
This commitment to continuity means McCarthy, who is in the final year of his contract, will finish the season despite the Cowboys seemingly heading toward their worst campaign since 2015’s 4-12 record.
McCarthy’s Struggles in 2024
McCarthy entered 2024 with high expectations, coming off three straight 12-win seasons. However, the team failed to address roster holes in free agency, allowing key players to walk while doing little to strengthen the squad.
The result? A season filled with underwhelming performances, including Monday’s non-competitive loss that showcased defensive lapses and offensive inconsistency. Yet, Jones remains confident in McCarthy’s ability to keep the locker room intact.
“You don’t need to worry about anybody in that locker room giving everything they’ve got and more,” Jones stated.
Looking Ahead
The Cowboys’ 3-7 record already eclipses the total losses from McCarthy’s previous seasons. With the coaching staff’s contracts set to expire after 2024, a complete overhaul seems imminent.
Jones’ refusal to act during the season is rooted in regret over past moves, including firing Chan Gailey after back-to-back playoff appearances in the late ’90s and dismissing Wade Phillips midseason in 2010. However, McCarthy’s tenure, with a 1-3 postseason record and mounting losses, leaves little hope for redemption.
As Dallas heads toward an offseason of uncertainty, all eyes remain on Jones, whose decision-making will shape the team’s future—starting with whether McCarthy’s replacement is already on his radar.
