The news was accompanied by a number of other Duffer brothers-focused revelations.
Things seem to happen together all at once, and after Stranger Things season 4, its showrunners, Mark and Ross Duffer, also known as the Duffer Brothers, have revealed that they are going to adopt a number of new projects supported, together with Netflix and their recently established label named Upside Down Pictures.
One of those projects will especially excite readers who enjoy Stephen King and Peter Straub’s works because the Duffer duo intends to adapt The Talisman, the 1984 novel by King and Straub, onto the big screen. Another good news is that the pair intend to collaborate with Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment. To complete the list, we have a classic 1980s horror novel by two renowned authors that is being turned into a television series by the creators of the best retro sci-fi show ever, with the support of a legendary filmmaker who produced some of our all-time beloved 1980s films. I tell you, this will be fantastic!
For anyone who hasn’t read The Talisman, the novel details the fantastical odyssey of its 12-year-old protagonist, Jack, as he searches for a magical stone that would heal his mother’s terminal illness. When Jack visits a parallel realm called “The Territories,” in which everybody in the “actual” world has a clone, the sci-fi fantasy element of the book really picks up. The young boy’s voyage ends in disaster because people in The Territories have the ability to switch realities and enter the bodies of their counterparts. A werewolf even exists, and the novel is an endless action journey between the 2 parallel realms!
The King and Straub novel is “far more fantasy” than the realm of Hawkins yet still containing the sci-fi and horror punch, Matt Duffer said in an interview with Deadline. The premise is extremely similar to Stranger Things, in addition. Curtis Gwinn, co-executive producer and writer of Stranger Things, deserves the creative credit for this one. Ideally, the siblings will ask him to write some of the script. We would expect the best from the siblings considering his track record with the Stranger Things characters and plot.
While we’re terribly disappointed that we have to wait for Stranger Things’ 5th season to premiere on Netflix, it’s comforting to understand that the production crew will continue working on a number of other works, including the on-screen adaptation of The Talisman. There are currently no other specifics, such as a release date, but keep checking Daily Highlight for updates.
