Phoebe Waller-Bridge is working on the new adaptation of the video game Tomb Raider.
All it makes me wonder is, who will they choose to play the next live-action, Lara Croft?
Angelina Jolie starred as the character in 2001 and 2003, while Alicia Vikander took the lead in a 2018 reboot. Now, a handful of actresses are in the running to take Lara over the edge for the new-look live-action take on Tomb Raider.
We have done this by rating them from what we consider to be the least to most probable.
#1 Jessie Buckley
A new Tomb Raider reboot is likely to bring a much younger version of Lara Croft in the mode of the most recent video games, but there’s an alternate universe where Jessie Buckley got out there to play Lara Croft.
A lot of it is due to her performance in acting; if you watch Endeavour, in which she stars, you might start to like it too.
#2 Daisy Ridley
One has to fulfill a number of requirements to potentially be eligible to play Lara Croft.
One of them is being British, but that’s not wholly a necessity. It is an actor’s job to, well, act.
Daisy Ridley was, at one point, considered for the 2018 Tomb Raider, which eventually went to Alicia Vikander, and perhaps it’s time that Ridley was reconsidered for the role.
Not only does she look like her, but she also carries herself in the manner that Lara Croft does, and her recent performances show that she has the acting capability for it.
#3 Milliy Alcock
That is very unlikely to ever happen since Milliy is currently quite occupied over at DC Studios, playing Supergirl, and will probably start filming in just a little bit.
It’s a pleasant reality to live in because once she has shown a British accent in one of her films, and most were fooled by it.
In addition, she has already proven herself to be a warrior, all of that fans got the sneaky glimpse of in HBO‘s House of the Dragon.
#4 Melissa Barrera
This is probably the fan-requested casting for Lara Croft and understandably so.
It starts questioning before some vowel sounds — I mean, can Melissa do a convincing British accent? But, again, with the right coach, she might be very up to this.
It’s a mere coincidence, but in three of her movies, now is the Lara Croft look; it is a matter of time until she actually dons the outfit to be Lara Croft herself.
#5 Hayley Atwell
With a new set of games coming out, it could well be that the studio goes for a distinctly younger Lara Croft à la the video games, in which case Hayley Atwell might be the perfect fit.
The Legend of Lara Croft is a brand new series on Netflix that features Lara Croft, voiced by Atwell.
It is a matter of knowledge that Amazon is now actually building a shared universe around Tomb Raider—games, movies, and shows.
There’s a pretty good shot that Netflix’s show is every bit as much part of that same shared universe. So casting Atwell is only contributing to that synergy.
We are not in a position to make these decisions for them, and I’m certain thousands of women out there are ideally the correct ones to be cast in the roles. I hope, in the next few years, we hear some news about the casting.
