Rumors have been swirling about Deion Sanders potentially joining the Dallas Cowboys as head coach if they part ways with Mike McCarthy. But recent reports suggest that neither Sanders nor the Cowboys are seriously considering this move.
On Thursday, Connor Orr of Sports Illustrated published a list of potential head coach candidates for the upcoming NFL hiring season. Orr mentioned that most current college coaches, including Sanders, likely won’t be in the running for NFL jobs this year. While many fans would love to see Sanders coach the Cowboys, Orr noted he hasn’t heard any real buzz connecting Sanders to the Dallas job.
This isn’t too surprising. For one, there’s no guarantee the Cowboys will let McCarthy go. Though his contract is up after this season, Jerry Jones, the Cowboys’ owner, has shown patience with head coaches in the past. Jason Garrett, for example, held the position for ten years despite frequent rumors about his job security.
Additionally, Sanders may not want to leave college football just yet. His team, the Colorado Buffaloes, has had a strong season, bouncing back after a disappointing start last year. Sanders has also said he doesn’t have a strong desire to coach in the NFL. When a former teammate asked him this week about the Cowboys rumors, Sanders kept his response brief.
Jones, now 82, is still chasing another Super Bowl title. While hiring Sanders would grab major attention, it also comes with risks, as Sanders has no prior experience coaching in the NFL. For now, it seems a reunion between Sanders and the Cowboys is unlikely.
