Life is full of contradictions. Every aspect of life is full of conflicts too. For example, let’s talk about movies and how theatrically failed flicks became cult classics! It might be because of differences between regular audiences and movie experts, changes in viewers’ tastes, or some big holiday spirits. Some movies got released and grossed poorly, but they became popular later.
Several of those features are notoriously known as horrible. On the other hand, some are extremely good. Regardlessly, they didn’t make a remarkable box office. They could be called flops. However, they are not forgotten. Indeed, they are listed, recommended, and rewatched even more than other successful movies.
Many fans think those movies were underrated. Meanwhile, harsh people assume they are lucky to enter the hall of classics ridiculously. How about watching them again with us?
#1. A Christmas Carol
Source: Disney
A Christmas Carol lost $100 million at the box office during the Christmas season. That fact alone killed ImageMovers Digital, ending an era of uncanny Mocap movies. However, the movie is listed as a must-watch every Boxing Day.
#2. Scott Pilgrim vs the World
Source: Universal Pictures
It was Stallone’s Expendables and also Eat Pray Love that took much of the attention away from this high-wire action comedy film. It didn’t matter because the flick is loved by numerous fans now.
#3. The Shawshank Redemption
Source: Columbia Pictures
Who knew this top classic movie was considered a box office flop when it was released? They blamed the title for the failure, but the movie is definitely brilliant and deserves the best title.
#4. Hocus Pocus
Source: Disney
Hocus Pocus was seen as a box office failure, particularly by Disney’s standards, earning just $39,000,000 domestically off a $28,000,000 budget. Nevertheless, people have watched it on the channel a bunch of times and remember to come back to it every spooky season.
#5. Donnie Darko
Source: Pandora Cinema
This movie is seen as one of the best teen dramas of all time and sparked the career of current Hollywood A-stars Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal. The failure at the box office could perhaps be down to the unfortunate timing of its release, which came in the wake of 9/11.
#6. Hugo
Source: Paramount Pictures
Despite getting 11 Academy Award nominations (winning five), Hugo, a beautiful movie about the filmmaking passion of a young boy, has totally flopped at the cinema.
#7. Blade Runner 2049
Source: Warner Bros.
The movie actually lost the studio $80 million in the long run. Blade Runner 2049’s critical reception was another story, however. Blade Runner 2049 is one of the best-looking movies of the 2010s.
#8. Rise of the Guardians
Source: Paramount Pictures
It’s not a surprise to see fanon pairings of Jack Frost from this movie and Elsa from Frozen. Actually, the movie ended up losing the studio $87 million. The character designs alone have spawned a niche but very dedicated fanbase online, as the hundreds of stories online show.
#9. The Iron Giant
Source: Warner Bros.
Grossing only $31.3 million against a $50 million budget, Warner Bros was all but ready to drop it after poor marketing on their part. However, the creators and audiences willed a box office flop into a cultural milestone for animation.
#10. Jennifer’s Body
Source: 20th Century Fox
Back then, this comedy-horror movie wasn’t appreciated much. Both Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried gained no reputation after starring in it. Thanks to the #metoo on Twitter, the movie got reevaluated and noticed as an ahead-of-time work about feminism.
