Teen Ref Outsmarts Power-Tripping Boss, Makes Him Lose His Job And $120!

There’s a certain kind of coworker who loves to play boss even when they’re not one. They invent rules, twist policies, and act like the authority everyone secretly wishes would quit. Most of us roll our eyes and move on but sometimes, karma needs a little help.

That’s exactly what happened when a young soccer referee got stuck working with a power-hungry senior ref named Dave. After being threatened with losing his pay over a made-up rule, this teen decided to get even and his quiet revenge turned into one of the most satisfying lessons in accountability you’ll ever read.

One teenage referee shared how his supervisor tried to claim that all referees must arrive 30 minutes before every game

'“Show up 30 minutes early.” Sure Dave, as long as you do too!?'

I am 15 years old and work as a soccer referee. I will normally arrive 10-15 minutes early to a game,

which is plenty of time to check in players from both teams and make sure the field is in proper playing condition.

One game I showed up to, as an assistant referee(AR). My center ref, 18 years old, let’s call him Dave,

told me that all refs have to arrive 30 minutes early to every game. I know this is not true, and stayed silent.

We reffed the game as usual, and returned to where we put our stuff at the end of the game.

Dave told me that because I didn’t arrive 30 minutes early, he would mark that I didn’t show up,

basically telling me that I wouldn’t get paid for the game we just worked.

I complained that this was a rule that he made up. He left the game without saying anything else, figuring that would be all.

Note: If you referee without any ARs, you get paid like 5$ more. I think this was Dave’s plan.

When I got home, I made sure to sign up to be center referee at every game where Dave was an AR.

Poor Dave showed up to his next game 15 minutes early, which is absolutely unacceptable.

I said nothing the whole game, but only marked him absent, which means he wouldn’t get paid.

This went on for a week and half until his paycheck came in, and he was about 120$ off of what his total should’ve been.

(I did make sure every game that Dave was less then 30 minutes early)

Dave emails one of the main referees(who run everything) to see what the problem was.

One of the main referees, let’s call him John, told Dave that he wasn’t there, so he wouldn’t get paid.

Dave put two and two together and realized what I did.

Emails were sent between Dave, John, and I, until John had the full story.

Dave was fired for making up rules, and I got paid for the first game with Dave.

Don’t take advantage of young people. Take that Dave. Edit: Don’t take advantage of people, not just young people.

Conflicts in youth workplaces often reveal the tension between authority and fairness. In this case, a 15-year-old referee faced retaliation from an older colleague who fabricated a rule to withhold payment.

This behavior highlights a common ethical breach in early professional environments: abuse of power.

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), workplace retaliation involves punishing someone for asserting their rights or challenging unfair treatment, and it can occur even in part-time or temporary positions.

Such behavior not only undermines trust but can also affect young workers’ sense of professional identity. Adolescents entering the workforce are still developing their understanding of boundaries, responsibility, and self-advocacy.

A 2022 article by Psychology Today notes that power imbalances can lead to “micro-abuses”, subtle acts of control or intimidation that may seem minor but have cumulative psychological effects.

When authority figures misuse their role, they risk discouraging new employees from speaking up or engaging with confidence.

In the story, the younger referee chose a retaliatory approach to expose the hypocrisy. While it led to the senior’s dismissal, it also raises questions about the ethics of revenge in professional settings.

Organizational behavior experts often distinguish between malicious compliance and constructive confrontation. The former satisfies a sense of justice but doesn’t necessarily promote accountability or learning.

Constructive confrontation, on the other hand, involves documenting incidents and reporting them through proper channels.

As industrial-organizational psychologist Dr. Paul White suggests, “retaliation, even when justified, can create a toxic cycle that teaches everyone to respond with the same hostility rather than with accountability.”

A healthier approach for young workers involves understanding their rights and learning formal communication methods.

In most employment settings, withholding pay for completed work is illegal and should be reported immediately to supervisors or labor boards.

The U.S. Department of Labor clarifies that every employee, regardless of age, is entitled to wages for hours worked.

Instead of mirroring unfair tactics, documenting events, gathering witnesses, and calmly escalating the issue can demonstrate maturity and protect one’s reputation.

Ultimately, the story serves as a lesson in professional ethics and emotional control. Young workers often feel powerless against older colleagues, but fairness and integrity remain their strongest defenses.

Standing firm, seeking guidance, and following official procedures create not only justice but also credibility. Respect, once earned through honesty, is far more enduring than payback.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors cheered OP for his clever payback

Vondecoy − Is anyone else more upset by the fact it's a Referee? Someone who is meant to be trustworthy.

NarrowHamster7879 − Good for you man. I remember my first shift behind the bar at my college job

from being a waiter at the same restaurant an older lady was working the bar with me and another bartender.

The other bartender got off early as scheduled and it was just me and the older lady.

Come end of the shift she did the splits, they seemed a little high to me but again,

first shift behind the bar so I was giving the benefit that maybe I was just confused.

Plus what’s an extra $20. Well my next shift I was waiting and my manager came up to me kinda guns a blazing

but willing to hear me out at least, asking me how much I made bartending the previous shift,

and then said “do you realize you stole from the bartender who left early?”

And I explained exactly what happened and apparently the older lady knew exactly what she was doing,

was upset the other bartender got to leave early, and gave us both higher splits of the tip jar

than we deserved and tried to pin it on me since I was “the new guy” well

if nothing else I learned that day the value of honesty because I got to keep the money I was given,

the other bartender got to get the difference from the restaurant, and the older lady got fired

No-Leopard-556 − I love it when a "Rules for thee but not for me" kind of person gets bit in the ass like this.

tetsu_no_usagi − "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" - the Bible.

Sounds like Dave wanted that done to him. Good job on being a moral person!

I'm not being sarcastic, I mean what I typed. I f__king hate hypocrites.

[Reddit User] − The true victim here is John, who has to sort all this s__t out.

Dougally − I can't do that Dave. 2001 A Space Odessey.

This group related personal stories about workplace manipulation and standing up for fairness

Odd_Marionberry5856 − If Dave was fired for making up rules, I hope you were not fired for applying those same rules.

Danni_Les − Guys like 'Dave' are out there - to mess with someone else's paycheck,

in this case, to 'earn' $5 more, he waited until the END OF GAME to inform you that he'll be marking you as absent.

That is not only a d__k move, but a cowardly one at that.

And so, people like 'Dave' exists in the adult world - they will do anything for '$5',

including forfeiting their trust, job security and everything else, just for a little extra money.

In the working world, the figure might be much higher,

but the fact remains that they will eventually get caught, and they will lose everything.

Hopefully this is a 'learning' experience for 'Dave', but if not, he's just another plonker

who will add himself to the list of people who no one wants to have anything to do with.

Good lad, standing your ground and the fun read on malicious compliance!

This commenter stressed that wage theft is serious

quanchompy − Next time just immediately report to HR or whatever governing body is running the league.

Regardless of in-time, it's absolutely illegal to not pay wages or mark someone 'absent'

when someone actually works a shift, and that's the better lesson here.

Even what you did in response would be considered illegal or wage theft.

Justice can come in many forms, but sometimes, it arrives on the referee’s whistle. This story isn’t just about paychecks or fake rules; it’s a reminder that confidence and fairness often win over manipulation and arrogance.
