Woman Gave Her Sister a Real Doctor Kit, Then Their Mom Called the Thoughtful Gift “Cheap”

The best gifts are not always the most expensive ones. Sometimes, they matter because they show that someone has been paying attention, especially when a child is excited about a dream that feels deeply personal.

The original poster (OP) wanted to encourage a younger sister who had recently become interested in medicine. Instead of buying a flimsy toy set, OP created a kit using real, safe medical supplies, including a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, scrubs, and other equipment.

Jem seemed thrilled at first, but their mother later accused OP of being cheap because most of the items were used. Read on to see whether Reddit thought this was a thoughtful gift or an inappropriate way to save money.

An aspiring young doctor receives a heartfelt birthday gift, but one family member sees it very differently

'AITA for getting my sister a “doctor kit”?'

My sister, Jem, (preteen) just had her birthday party. All of my siblings and I have always been close, for the most part.

Well, recently, Jem has been expressing interest in being a doctor when she grows up. I’m in the medical field, so I was thrilled!

I wanted to get her a doctor kit for her birthday, but when I got to looking, everything seemed too young for her- along with cheap and plastic.

Well, I figured I had some supplies in my house that I’d outgrown, so who better to give it to?

At the party, Jem opened her very own “doctor” kit!

I gave her my old stethoscope and BP cuff, pulse ox, a pair of scrubs that would almost fit her, an ace wrap,

some disposable supplies from work, a thermometer, procedure masks and a gown, even an old reflex hammer that one of my doctors offered to throw in.

Nothing was sharp or dangerous. I also taught her how to use it later that night and she was THRILLED!

We could hardly get her to sit down and eat dinner, my heart ached seeing her so happy for the first time like that in a long time.

Yesterday, my mother texted me, very upset.

She said that the gift was bad because almost all of it was used- and I’d upgraded my own stuff to give Jem instead of buying new for her.

She said the scrubs didn’t fit Jem properly, so Jem was sad that I’d decided to “cheap out” on her.

I don’t have a lot of money and I tried to explain real equipment is expensive.

My mother said I should’ve gone with a different gift, then. She said this was a repeat of my brother’s “ramen kit” all over again.

I thought my gift had been thoughtful and had shown how I’m paying attention to her interests, but my mom and Jem have been ignoring me.

I didn’t mean to offend her and now I wish I’d never done this stupid present at all. I know they live differently from me, but she seemed happy when...

I could be the AITA because most of what I gave her is used, but I’m not sure. AITA, Reddit?

EDIT:. Adding in a few things here that are frequently asked.

The ramen kit was for my brother, who really, really likes ramen.

I bought him all different types of ramen, toppings, and sauce from different countries so he could try them.

I think he ate at least some of it, because there was a lot missing from the box when I came to visit.

But my mom said the gift was cheap and bad for his health.

Also changed some information in the original post due to being recognizable, I did not expect this to get this big.

The most meaningful gifts are often the ones that make someone feel noticed rather than impressed. The OP did not simply gather old medical equipment to avoid spending money.

She listened when her younger sister expressed a dream, used her own professional experience, and created something far more realistic than the plastic kits designed for small children. Jem’s immediate excitement suggests that the emotional message landed clearly: her interest was being taken seriously.

The tension began when the mother judged the present through price, condition, and presentation rather than intention. From the OP’s perspective, the used stethoscope, blood-pressure cuff, scrubs, and other safe supplies gave Jem an authentic introduction to medicine.

From the mother’s viewpoint, secondhand equipment and poorly fitting clothing may have looked like discarded belongings presented as a birthday gift.

Both interpretations are possible, but Jem’s enthusiasm before the criticism matters. Her later disappointment may reflect her mother’s framing as much as her original reaction.

A different perspective is that the family may have conflicting “gift languages.” The OP expresses affection through personalization, creativity, and shared experience. Her mother appears to associate care with buying something new, polished, and conventionally valuable.

That same conflict appeared with the ramen kit: the OP saw a collection built around her brother’s interest, while the mother saw inexpensive food.

The repeated pattern suggests that this disagreement is not mainly about the doctor kit. It concerns what the family considers proof that someone has spent enough effort or money.

Consumer psychologist Kit Yarrow explains that gifts carry social and emotional messages beyond their practical value.

Research summarized by psychologist Bella DePaulo also shows that gift-givers often assume expensive presents seem more thoughtful, while recipients generally do not judge thoughtfulness by price alone. What often matters is whether the gift reflects the recipient’s preferences and communicates genuine attention.

The American Psychological Association further notes that giving can activate feelings associated with pleasure, connection, and trust.

Applied here, the doctor kit was thoughtful because it connected Jem’s ambition with her older sister’s world. The lesson, demonstration, and excitement transformed ordinary equipment into an experience.

However, disposable workplace supplies should only be included if they were obtained appropriately, clean, unopened, and safe for nonclinical use. Replacing the scrubs with an inexpensive correctly sized pair could also address the only obvious weakness without invalidating the entire gift.

The OP should speak to Jem directly rather than argue through their mother. She could ask which parts Jem enjoyed and offer to exchange or improve anything that disappointed her.

A present does not need to be costly to be generous. Sometimes the finest gift is having an older sibling say, through action, “I see what you could become.”

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors urged OP to ask Jem directly instead of trusting the mother’s claims

Lunar-Eclipse0204 − NTA - Ask Jem how she truly feels. Your mother might be putting words into her mouth/brain.

ManifestDiatribe − Why does your mother’s attempt to stir up trouble matter more than your sister’s reaction?

She loved her gift, and it was thoughtful. NTA

ifticar2 − NTA, your gift was extremely thoughtful, and besides, Jem is 12, it’s not like the scrubs need to fit her properly to go to work or something lol.

I’d talk to your sister about it. You’re getting secondhand info from your mother

These commenters suspected the mother was creating tension between OP and the siblings

anonymoususername722 − Sounds like the reason you and Jem aren’t close might be your mother ….

Natural-Seaweed-5070 − JFC, you are NOT ta. It sounds like your mom is though. Jen seemed thrilled, that’s all that matters.

Twichl2 − NTA, but after reading this and some comments - your mom is.

I think you need to spend 1 on 1 time with your siblings and ask them how they feel about their gifts, take them out somewhere or have them over.

You might learn that mom is shaming them for enjoying something she personally doesn't like/gifts you gifted.

Your mom will draw a wedge between you and your younger siblings if this is true. I wonder if she does other exclusionary behavior with you?

These users praised the thoughtful gift and defended using practical secondhand medical items

JustGenericName2 − Joke's on your mom, scrubs don't fit ANYONE properly! NTA. These people sound insufferable.

The gift was showing her how to use these items. At 22, I wasn't buying anyone gifts, I was broke AF.

SillyQuadrupeds − NTA Since Jem won't talk to you it seems like mom may have gotten in her ear about everything being used and secondhand.

If you're able to talk to Jem 1-on-1 in person Id say thats ideal and explain why everything was secondhand.

Medical equipment IS expensive. Scrubs are expensive.

If you got her everything new that would've been hundreds of dollars and thats just not reasonable.

You wanted to give her the real deal, not the kiddie s__t you saw online or in stores.

If in person isn't possible, maybe just a flat text explaining everything and then leaving the ball in her court for when she's ready to reply.

She's 12, even if she doesn't appreciate it now hopefully she will later.

vlzie − NTA - maybe your mom was unhappy but not Jem. Talk to Jem directly?

And also maybe you can take her on a hospital shadow trip/field trip to strengthen your bond or extend the birthday present.

This commenter wanted more context about the earlier ramen-kit gift.

Consistent-Star5745 − What's the backstory on the "Ramen kit"?

Did she independently feel disappointed, or was she taught that enjoying a secondhand gift meant accepting less? Should the siblings discuss it privately before the mother’s version becomes permanent?
