Supervisor Tried To Throw A New Teacher Under The Bus, But Her Receipts Got Him Fired

There’s nothing more infuriating than being blamed for someone else’s mistake, especially when you’ve done everything right. But one first-year special education teacher had something most people don’t: receipts.

Her story from r/PettyRevenge shows why keeping records isn’t petty, it’s self-defense. And in this case, it didn’t just save her job. It may have helped remove a negligent supervisor from his.

A SPED teacher, ignored by her supervisor on a student’s 1-on-1 para request, sends proof to his boss

'The time a supervisor tried to throw me under the bus, but I had receipts?'

This happened in 2015, during my first year of teaching in special education (USA).

I don’t know if anyone else here works in sped, but if you do, you’re probably familiar with the difficult process of obtaining a 1 on 1 para for a...

So, I had this kiddo, we’ll call him J. J had some unsafe behaviors as a kindergartener, such as eloping from the school and into the neighborhood.

It was terrifying to say the least, and a big safety concern, so I spoke with my supervisor,

showed him the data, and he agreed this student definitely needed 1 on 1 support.

My supervisor, Mr. C, worked with me for a couple of weeks on the safety net process (getting a 1 on 1).

It was a lot of loops and jumps and saying the right thing in very specific ways, but I got it completed!

I sent it to Mr. C for the last final review…and was met with silence.

I emailed him after a day, cause we’re all busy in this field, no worries…but more silence.

I called his office and left a voicemail with his secretary, but more silence.

I tried to get a hold of him for 2 weeks, with growing worry, because the deadline was approaching…but I never heard back from him.

After the due date passed, he finally messaged me and said since I didn’t reach out to him with the final copy, the 1 on 1 wasn’t approved. I was...

So, I gathered copies of all the emails, the phone calls, every attempt I made to reach out to him and sent them to his boss, Mr. B (head of...

I also included Mr. C’s last email.

A couple of days later, Mr. C sent me a formal letter of apology through our district mailing system.

Mr. B granted me an extension and filed the paperwork himself, and also granted me an emergency 1 on 1 while the paperwork processed.

At the end of the year, Mr. C was fired from his position.

I doubt it was just me, but I’m sure my receipts had something to do with his removal as a sped supervisor.

And that’s my story! I was telling it to a coworker here and he said I should post it under petty revenge.

Documentation can be a teacher’s best protection, and this story illustrates exactly why. In special education, accountability is not just bureaucratic; it is ethical.

According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), schools are required to provide a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), which includes proper supports for students whose behaviors interfere with learning or safety. When a supervisor delays or ignores this process, it places both the teacher and the student at risk.

Dr. Anita Archer, an educational consultant and author of Explicit Instruction, notes that data and written communication are a teacher’s “armor in a compliance-driven system.”

Keeping organized records, emails, phone logs, and data sheets creates what psychologists call a paper trail of credibility, protecting professionals from being scapegoated when others fail to act.

In organizational psychology, this is a form of impression management through transparency: you’re not defending yourself reactively, you’re documenting proactively.

From a workplace-behavior standpoint, the supervisor’s silence and later blame reflect a common pattern known as deflective leadership, when managers shift accountability downward to maintain control or avoid scrutiny.

Research published in the Journal of Educational Administration shows that such behaviors increase burnout among special education staff, already one of the most stress-intensive professions in education.

By escalating the issue through the proper chain of command and providing verifiable evidence, the teacher not only protected themselves but also upheld the student’s right to services. Educational psychologist Dr. Ross Greene emphasizes that “adults who advocate effectively for vulnerable students model problem-solving and resilience.”

So, in systems with complex compliance procedures, professionalism and self-advocacy depend on precision and documentation. “Receipts” are not about mistrust; they’re about integrity, ensuring that when students’ needs hang in the balance, the truth can stand on paper.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

Commenters praised OP for fighting for the student and called out systemic neglect

addymp − You’re amazing for working so hard to get a kid services. F__k Mr. C.

desertboots − I'd say Mr. C was specially educated out of the system. Well done.

PaddyBoy1994 − As a former spec ed kid, who's now flourishing as a diesel mechanic as an adult,

thank you for going out of your way to make sure that kid had the help he needed. and f__k that spec ed supervisor.

That shithead knew EXACTLY what he was doing.

bentnotbroken96 − SPED teachers get the shaft so often... good for you! My wife was a SPED teacher for a few years.

Last two years in the job they kept telling her she needed an assistant, and they were working on it but there was no budget.

When she left the school and went to just teach 2nd grade, they replaced her with TWO SPED teachers, each with an assistant.

M5606 − Getting any resources allocated towards special education is like pulling teeth. My son has special needs and at one point became a flight risk.

\When we pushed for a 1 on 1 para the schools admins actually tried guilt tripping us, saying they would have to pull one from another student, as if we...

Mind you they had the budget for another, they just "couldn't find a candidate" for the job. Thankfully we got it and he did much better.

At least until the following year when the special ed teacher and para both left and were replaced by a brand new out of school teacher and a new-to-the-profession para.

Things went south so bad we had to pull him from school.

These users stressed the power of written records, emails, and proof against bad bosses

LindonLilBlueBalls − This is why I don't delete emails and always follow up a call with an email confirming everything talked about on the call.

It's all about covering your own ass, as nobody is going to do it for you. Also, sped teachers do not get enough live and appreciation.

My wife is an SLP and works with many people in sped, both students and teachers/aides.

So I hear second hand how difficult it can be at times.

MowingInJordans − Always have receipts. I have a supervisor that will ask me questions in person, he will then either forget on accident or I start to think on purpose.

Then I would get reprimanded from management. I will only send him emails now, if he stops by my desk I tell him straight up, I will send him an...

ratherBwarm − I had a CEO walk into a review late and screaming at me, claiming he’d explicitly told me to do x,y and x.

We’d never had a single email or meeting prior on any of this.

I had spent months cobbling together a joint US-Scottish subsidiary plan with a major software purchase,

only to redo it only for the US side after learning it was illegal to include our Scottish sub and transfer licenses to them.

I’d left a dozen emails and voicemails to the Scottish manager and finally proceeded without him.

I, the CEO this in the meeting when he finally took a breath. He ended the meeting and told me to be in his office in 2 hrs.

I printed and dated all my emails and calls to Scotland, and expecting to be fired, went to his office to be told he had gone to lunch with visitors.

I sent a summary to him, and never heard back. The plan and purchase went through. No acknowledgment, no apologies, no thanks.

One of the many “rule by fear and intimidation” managers in Fortune 500 companies.

They told similar “paper-trail saves the day” experiences from other workplaces

Newbosterone − I heard a great story from my days in the military.

An enlisted man keeps sending an official application (packet) for special training, promotion, or commendation, something like that.

Someone in Personnel keeps "losing it".

It's pretty difficult to put these together sometimes, your permanent record since enlisting, formal recommendations with signatures from high up people, etc.

When the guy got fed up, he made ten copies of the application materials.

When he had to get them signed, he'd ask them to sign all 10 (originals only! no copies!), and explain why.

Eventually, an officer way above his level told him, "If this one gets lost, have them call me and I'll help look for it!"

He delivered the application by hand to the person he suspected of losing it.

When he gave it to him, he said, "Oh, by the way, I have 9 more, and Gen Smith said he'd help look for it if it got lost." It...

Tremenda-Carucha − It's so infuriating when someone in power tries to ignore your needs until you have proof, but I guess that's why keeping records is so important...

(I mean, who needs a supervisor when you've got paperwork on your side?) Has that ever happened to you?

Do you think the supervisor deserved to be fired, or was this just karma balancing the scales? And more importantly, how many unread emails do you think are still sitting in Mr. C’s inbox? Sound off in the comments below!
