Office Meltdown Ensues After Coworker Repeats ‘D*ck’ On Speakerphone For 30 Minutes Straight

Sometimes the office becomes the last place where you expect to lose your composure, but a perfectly ridiculous moment can push anyone over the edge. That’s what happened to one Redditor who had to sit through her coworker’s thirty-minute speakerphone call.

The co-worker believed using someone’s name repeatedly made her more persuasive, but the subcontractor she was talking to had a name that made every sentence sound unintentionally suggestive.

The Redditor tried to stay professional, but the conversation went off the rails so completely that holding back laughter became impossible.

Now the coworker feels humiliated and blames the Redditor for reacting.

Office Meltdown Ensues After Coworker Repeats ‘D*ck’ On Speakerphone For 30 Minutes Straight
Not the actual photo

'AITA for laughing at my co-worker's call with D__k?'

My coworker (early 30s) read a management/negotiation book that said to use someone's name a lot to get them to agree with you or something.

It doesn't work. Mostly because she says it way too much.

Kinda like "Hey John, thanks for getting back to me. What I need you to do, John, is to go through the paperwork again. Can you do that, John? Thanks,...

It's really obvious and off-putting. Especially with a subcontractor that's run by a guy named Richard... who goes by D_ck.

She and I are sharing an office, and they had a half-hour call on speaker where she said things like.

"D_ck, this is just what I need". "Oh god, D_ck!". "I can't take much more D_ck". "I know it's hard, D_ck". "Can you send me a picture, D_ck?".

"Come on, D_ck, come on already". "D_ck, D_ck, D_ck, slow down, I can't keep up". And so much more, I can't remember.

I was holding it together, but when D_ck said he would have to check with his project manager, WHO'S ALSO NAMED RICHARD, she said, "Well then, get that other D_ck...

I burst out laughing and ran out of the room.

Thankfully, D_ck had a sense of humor about it and wasn't offended, and our boss thinks it's funny. But she is furious at me and says I embarrassed her.

I know we're at work and I should be professional, but there's only so many D_cks I can take. Edit:

1) I didn't make any jokes or say a word other than laughing before I left. I was at my desk trying to do my own work while she was...

2) My coworker usually talks perfectly normally, but it's only when she tries to get you to do something that your name is said every other sentence.

3) We do a lot of work with his firm, so this isn't the first time jokes about his name have gone around the office.

He's great with paperwork, so the 2 women who make up our accounting department make jokes to each other about how they love to handle D_ck and giggle.

This whole saga started with something small: a coworker falling a little too in love with a management trick and turning a normal client call into accidental workplace stand-up.

The OP’s “crime” was not inventing the innuendo, but failing to smother a very human reaction when the combination of repeated names and unfortunate phrasing pushed things over the edge.

From the coworker’s perspective, though, that laughter landed right at the intersection of her effort and her insecurity, so it felt less like shared humor and more like public humiliation.

Underneath the comedy, this is a story about communication tactics gone wrong.

Modern workplaces encourage employees to “sell” ideas, build rapport and sound more influential, but many people pick up these techniques from books, blogs or workshops without real coaching.

When that happens, methods get overused or applied mechanically. Surveys on workplace communication show how fragile this space is.

One large review found that 63% of workers report wasting time at work because of miscommunication, and a notable share directly link awkward or unclear communication to worse relationships and unnecessary conflict.

Experts generally agree that using someone’s name can be powerful, but only in moderation.

Michigan State University Extension notes that a person’s name is deeply tied to identity and recognition, yet offers a clear warning: “Beware of overdoing it… If you use it too much, you may appear that you’re trying to manipulate them, which is likely to have the reverse effect you desired.”

That line describes this coworker perfectly. She wasn’t trying to be unprofessional; she was leaning so hard on a persuasion trick that it slipped from rapport-building into farce.

For next steps, a neutral, low-drama approach would serve everyone best. The OP could calmly acknowledge that the moment got out of hand and clarify that the laughter was about the absurd situation, not about her competence.

The coworker, in turn, might benefit from reframing the episode as feedback from reality, if a communication tactic makes colleagues crack up, it probably also distracts clients.

Check out how the community responded:

These commenters cheered OP on, insisting that no reasonable person could sit through that many “D_cks” with a straight face.

Stoat__King − NTA. Your co-worker was at least partially doing that on purpose.

I laughed just reading it! Side note: I went to school with someone called Richard Head. Not joking.

pbc85 − NTA. I’m laughing so hard just reading this.

ThistleDewToo − NTA. People laugh at funerals. Sometimes there's just no controlling it.

I definitely wouldn't have been able to stop after the first two or three D_cks, so I admire your restraint.

mark_1950 − NTA. That was enough D_ck for anyone.

This group backed OP but also gently teased him, saying she clearly wanted to tell the story, and honestly, they were glad she did.

Summerie − NTA, but you literally just wanted to tell that story.

[Reddit User] − Only so many D_cks I can take. Lol. NTA.

Sfb208 − NTA, it wasn't intentional, though I'm not sure I wouldn't have already evacuated the room as preventative measures.

But thanks for explaining why the bloke who rang to try and upsell me an extended warranty on my new TV used my name so much.

You're right, it's really obvious and off-putting. I'd really like to know where they got the idea that this would encourage people to buy stuff!

abeosa − NTA. As someone who has spent most of their adult life working in an office (until COVID), these are the kind of moments that get you through the...

Don't beat yourself up for having a sense of humour.

These Redditors took a more serious stance, saying OP mishandled the situation by letting laughter spill into the professional space.

jam_and_ham − I’m gonna go against the current grain and say YTA.

This is a work place not your house and I can understand why this woman may not comfortable being the center of a d__k joke.

It’s not about whether or not the joke is funny; it’s about respecting a professional workplace.

She can’t help that a co-worker's name is D_ck, and I don’t think it is unfair for her to ask that you don’t sexualize her comments.

I understand that you are not trying to make this into a s__ thing, and I totally get why internally you find this funny, but like I said, this really...

You can make these jokes in your head all you want, but if you react to them out loud, you are putting your co-worker in an uncomfortable situation that has...

Edit to add: Yes, I’m aware that OP did not say a d_ck joke by yelling out “You know d_ck also means d_ck right????”

But what laughing out loud in a way that people can clearly tell why (which, since op clearly outlines several different people’s reactions, is definitely the case), you are drawing...

If everyone can tell (and based on OP’s post, they clearly can) why you are laughing at your colleague, you are involving them with a d_ck joke.

You are drawing attention to the innuendo that would otherwise not have happened.

Had OP been mature enough to keep their amusement to themselves, their co-worker would not have been put in a position where her work conversation was clearly being laughed at...

She changed the fact that this dude is named D_ck, and now, because of OP, she knows that if she simply talks to him, people are sexualizing her comments.

I’m done responding to comments because obviously I am not the majority opinion, and I’m not about to fight for eternity because in people's eyes “Well, he didn’t really involve...

I’ve heard your opinions, and though I don’t agree with all of them, I do agree with your right to have them.

I simply don’t have the energy to devote my life to debating them.

WetMonkeyTalk − It may be just me, but if somebody uses my name that much, it puts my hackles up, makes me uncomfortable and resentful, and makes their job harder,...

It's an idiotic strategy. That said, I burst out laughing and ran out of the room. Are you 12? ESH.

capitalegg27 − The fact that almost all of these comments are saying he’s not the a__hole confirms that no actual adults are giving advice on this sub. Grow up.

These users empathized with OP completely, admitting they would’ve cracked too.

[Reddit User] − NTA. I can't believe that she didn't do that on purpose.

[Reddit User] − NTA, I started laughing at 'get that other d_ck'.

mandiexile − NTA. I have a coworker who either intentionally or unintentionally says a lot of s__ual innuendoes during Zoom meetings and another coworker and I will Slack each other...

And it’s so hard to keep a straight face (TWSS) that I have to turn off my camera.

It’s good that you ran out of the room. I wouldn’t have been able to keep it together either.

gandaSun − I burst out laughing and ran out of the room. Maybe you should have done the running a little sooner, but I can see you probably didn't expect...

Since you're not a robot, the most you can really do is remove yourself from a situation you can't handle.

I hate people who expect you to robotize your way through life.

NTA, perhaps slightly YTA for not leaving sooner, but maybe somebody should have a talk with your coworker about how she's making a bit of a fool of herself.

This one feels like a sitcom episode come to life. The OP didn’t mock anyone, it was pure, uncontrollable reflex at the world’s most unintentionally hilarious conference call. But professionalism does matter, and the coworker’s embarrassment is real.

Does the coworker need to rethink her negotiation “name-dropping” strategy before it causes more chaos? How would you handle this if you were trapped in that office? Share your hottest takes below!
