Company Learns the Hard Way: Don’t Mess With a Union President’s Boot Vouchers

When a Fortune 500 company tried to skirt a minor clause in a union contract, they thought they could save a few bucks on steel-toe boots. They were wrong.

The union president, tired of the excuses, decided to initiate a protest that was impossible to ignore, and utterly fabulous.

Instead of fighting management in a boardroom, he fought them with hot pink duct tape, turning worn-out shoes into loud, visible symbols of corporate non-compliance. The result was a hilarious victory that forced the company to honor the contract.

Now, read the full story:

Company Learns the Hard Way: Don't Mess With a Union President's Boot Vouchers

Won’t Honor the Contract? Fine, hope you like Hot Pink Duct Tape?

Many years ago I was an elected union president at a Fortune 500 company, but I was only in charge of one contracted group.

As such the bargaining power of the main company was much higher than my own, but even they couldn’t intervene too much.

My groups contract switched from company A to company B in 2012, but the contract remained unchanged.

Company B inherited all of the contract requirements of company A and agreed to meet them, but opted to fight me on several minor clauses when it came down to...

Most were solved without much conflict, but the major sticking point was in regard to uniforms.

Our contract ensured that we were given an allowance to pay for new uniforms and vouchers for steel toe boots every year.

When it came time for our new vouchers, they refused, citing that they’d given us a slight raise which should offset the cost of boots.

I informed them that a cost of living raise didn’t void the portion of the contract requiring them to provide vouchers for shoes, to which they responded they just hadn’t...

After assurances they would provide the vouchers as soon as they could work it out, I dropped the issue.

Unsurprisingly, months later they still hadn’t provided vouchers for replacement shoes.

It should be noted that this was a very large campus and many of us walked several miles a day in these shoes, and the shoes were caked with chemicals...

We had to wear the same work shoes in office areas and we had started to get complaints. I decided to lean in to this. This is where malicious compliance...

No new shoes? Fine. I’ll rig them up to last longer.

I went out and bought several rolls of the flashiest and most obnoxious duct tape I could find.

I began to “repair” holes in my shoes with duct tape and extra fabric to the point that my hot pink shoes became easily recognizable.

The safety team for the main company was so amused they gifted me hot pink safety glasses and gloves to match.

I also lent out my gaudy duct tape collection to any employee needing to “upgrade” their shoes.

Suddenly the complaints about our dirty shoes were replaced by complaints about obviously duct taped shoes.

Whenever we were asked we’d tell both union and non union coworkers that it was a small protest against the refusal to honor the shoe vouchers in the contract.

The next year rolls around and still no shoe vouchers, but suddenly our uniform allowance was increased ~$150 to allow for new steel toed shoes to be purchased.

After speaking to the union members, I agreed to allow that in place of the vouchers.

I kept my duct tape collection permanently on display as a threat and would use it any time safety equipment wasn’t being replaced and required “repair”.

This is a perfect example of how creative, non-violent protest can achieve results when direct negotiation fails. The company tried to hide behind bureaucracy and budget cuts, but the union president exposed their petty greed using a highly visible, highly embarrassing tool.

The genius of the hot pink duct tape was that it transformed a minor contract dispute into a public spectacle. The company could ignore an email, but they couldn’t ignore dozens of employees walking around their campus in brightly colored, obviously “repaired” footwear.

The fact that the company’s own safety team found the protest amusing enough to join in with matching gear proves how ridiculous management’s position was.

This story is a masterclass in malicious compliance, where OP followed the rules (wear the required shoes) while simultaneously highlighting the company’s failure to uphold its end of the contract.

According to research into workplace dynamics, visible, non-disruptive protests often succeed by leveraging public opinion and corporate image. As Dr. Michael C. Jensen, an expert in organizational behavior, noted, “When employees make a company’s internal failures externally visible, especially through humor or absurdity, it quickly forces management to address the issue to avoid reputational damage.”

The company had initially tried to use a cost-of-living raise as an excuse to void the boot vouchers. This is a common tactic, but legally dubious. The contract stipulated the vouchers separately from salary increases.

The OP’s action successfully shifted the complaint from a private union grievance to a highly visible, ongoing joke. The company realized that the cost of providing the shoes was far less than the cost of having their campus look like a brightly colored, low-budget repair shop. The subsequent increase in the uniform allowance was a quiet surrender.

Check out how the community responded:

Redditors overwhelmingly loved the stylish and effective nature of the protest, celebrating the OP’s creativity.

Stabbmaster - I mean, they got away that first year not having to pay, but at what price? What loud, flashy, and fabulous! !!!! price?

wibblings - I hate the color pink, but in this case, I fully support it!

yo_what_gives - I totally assumed (you know what they say) that you were a dude and I was just imagining some man in pink work boots, gloves, and goggles doing...

I even had a MoneySuperMarket Epic Squads danceoff going through my head as I read your story. XD

Many commenters praised the OP for using union power and malicious compliance to win the dispute.

driveonacid - I love that you kept your pink pair on display as a warning. Companies need reminders like that.

Maleficent-63 - I love being in a union just for the pettiness game you get to play with management.

kittypr0nz - Union, compliance, and duct tape, my 3 favorite tools.

A few users acknowledged that while the protest was brilliant, the company still managed to save money for one year.

AnthonyDigitalMedia - They still got away with not paying for your new shoes for a year though?

SirSteve1968 - Way back in the day, I carried obnoxious girly pink Bic lighters, or Zippos. ..kept My lighters from ending in my fireklepto buddies pocket.

.. had to hold him upside down and shake him at the end of the night. ..lol

Finally, some users just wanted to see the iconic footwear.

rnb6706 - Please let us see those pink shoes.

Archangel4500000 - Ferengi rule of Acquisition #17 "A contract is a contract is a contract. .. but only between Ferengi"

This story proves that sometimes, the most effective protest is the one that makes the opposition look the most ridiculous. The OP’s hot pink shoes became a symbol of corporate penny-pinching, and the company quickly realized that saving $150 per employee wasn’t worth the daily embarrassment.

Do you think the OP should have held out for the vouchers instead of settling for the uniform allowance increase?
