Boss Steals His Employee’s Project, Then Begs Him to Stay After He Lands a Better Job

Sometimes, quitting a job is about more than money, benefits, or finding a better position. When someone feels consistently overlooked, there comes a point when staying can seem more exhausting than walking away.

And things can get especially frustrating when the person taking you for granted suddenly realizes how much they depended on you.

The original poster (OP) had spent months working on a major project, only to watch his boss present it to upper management as his own.

Instead of confronting him immediately, OP quietly made plans to leave and soon found a much better opportunity. But when his resignation became official, his boss and the company suddenly seemed very interested in keeping him around. Read on to see what happened next!

After his boss steals credit for his project, one employee quits, only to face an unexpected plea to stay

'Update: I (29M) Quit My Job After My Boss Took Credit for My Project—Now They’re Begging Me to Come Back'

A few weeks ago, I shared how my boss completely stole credit for a major project I had spent months working on.

I didn’t say anything at first, but when he presented my work to upper management as his own without even acknowledging my contributions, I was furious.

I decided right then that I was done.

I started quietly looking for new opportunities, and within two weeks, I had an offer—better pay, better title, and fully remote.

I turned in my resignation, and let’s just say, my boss did not take it well.

First, he acted indifferent, like he didn’t care. Then, two days before my last day, HR and upper management suddenly wanted to “discuss my future at the company.”

I politely declined. That’s when the real desperation kicked in.

My boss, the same guy who had stolen my work, personally pulled me aside and tried to convince me to stay.

He claimed I was "an invaluable member of the team" and that he "always saw leadership potential" in me.

I asked him why, if that was the case, he had taken full credit for my project. He had no real answer—just mumbled something about "teamwork."

I left on good terms with my colleagues, but I made sure to let upper management know why I was leaving.

Now, a week into my new job, I got an email from HR at my old company saying they’d be “open to negotiating a counteroffer” if I reconsidered.

Absolutely not. I love my new job, my manager actually respects me, and I get to work in my pajamas. No regrets.

For anyone stuck in a toxic work environment—know your worth.

Workplace recognition is not merely a feel-good extra. Gallup and Workhuman have studied the connection between recognition, engagement, and employee retention, and their findings make this Reddit story look less like an isolated office tantrum and more like a very familiar workplace pattern.

Their 2024 research tracked more than 3,400 employees over two years and found that employees receiving high-quality recognition were 45% less likely to have left their organization two years later.

There is also a fascinating mismatch between how managers think they are recognizing employees and how employees actually experience it.

Gallup reported that nearly 60% of managers believed they were doing a good job recognizing their teams, while only 35% of individual contributors agreed. In other words, one side may think the workplace appreciation buffet is overflowing while the other is staring at an empty plate.

Psychology Today contributor Judith Sills, Ph.D., has written about the complicated dynamics of receiving and giving credit at work, noting that acknowledgment for a contribution can matter beyond a paycheck. That distinction matters here.

The Reddit employee was not simply upset about missing a compliment. His concern was that authorship and professional visibility had apparently been separated from the person who did the work.

At the same time, the boss’s behavior could have several explanations. Perhaps he genuinely believed presenting the project as a management achievement was normal. Perhaps he underestimated how important individual recognition was to his employee.

Or perhaps he simply assumed the employee would remain loyal regardless. None of those possibilities changes the outcome, but they could explain why the company suddenly became interested once resignation was on the table.

The practical lesson is less dramatic than the Reddit comments suggest. Employees can document contributions, communicate accomplishments clearly, and raise concerns before frustration reaches the exit stage. Managers, meanwhile, can make ownership explicit and give credit publicly.

Gallup’s research found that employees receiving recognition from their manager at least weekly were significantly more engaged when recognition accompanied regular feedback.

For this employee, the new job seems to have solved more than a salary problem. It gave him an environment where his contribution was visible and his manager’s appreciation did not arrive with a resignation letter attached.

Sometimes the healthiest professional move is not demanding that an old workplace finally understand someone’s value, but finding a workplace where that value is recognized before the farewell email.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These Redditors criticized managers for stealing credit and urged employees to call it out.

RedParaglider − I never understood managers that pay credit for their employees work.

Do they not realize that it makes them look so much better as executive material

to do nothing but praise their employees and talk about how great their employees are?

In management you are a vote that floats by enabling your employees to be great to the best of your ability.

[Reddit User] − Did you tell the HR lot in simple terms he took credit?

These Redditors advised knowing your worth, demanding fair pay, and protecting your work.

cloudmatt1 − I say tell them you'd be willing to entertain a consultant gig, then quote them what you consider "fair" compensation.

They get desperate enough you could milk them for a tidy sum every time they need your help.

TheUser_1 − Ask for your salary x4

WelshLove − move on to a new job they are asswipes. but learn how to add

unremovable watermarks to your work that need a password, the water mark would be your name of course,

These commenters cheered leaving bad workplaces, saying better jobs can bring higher pay and balance

Simple-Ad835 − Definitely know your worth! ! I sent an immediate resignation one day to my manager and the entire hr department.

I ended up getting a much better schedule, which was all I was asking for and they kept denying it, triggering the sudden move.

In the end I got my yearly raise, better hours, and much better work-life balance to be with my kids more in the evenings

Expensive_Candle5644 − Had issues with my previous supervisor. Got tired of his BS and started looking. I was there for 5 years.

3 months later I was flown into my new employers Corp office, got picked up in a black car,

was put up in an embassy suits and got an offer for 25% more than I was making previously 3 days after my trip to corp.

These Redditors doubted the story’s authenticity and criticized the suspicious account and storytelling

jaded-are − without seeing the flair, i knew it was fiction when it only took 2 weeks to find a new job in this economy

AqueousJam − I love this sub. It shines a light on how thin and insubstantial all of the reddit story subs are.

ocean_800 − This is such a bot account, just look at the posts

Why do some companies become generous with praise only when an employee has already checked out? Was refusing the counteroffer the sensible move, or could a serious negotiation have changed the situation? And if a former employer suddenly offered a much bigger paycheck, would the temptation be strong enough to reconsider?
