Thieves Try To Steal This Man’s Car, But Somehow He “Steals” Their Stolen Honda Instead

Some late-night noises make your heart drop instantly, and the sound of your car’s engine turning over when you definitely didn’t start it is one of them.

That’s exactly how one Redditor’s wild, half-asleep adventure began, jolted awake, confused, and realizing someone was trying to steal his old Honda right in front of his house. Instead of freezing up, he bolted outside in nothing but underwear, yelling into the dark before his brain could even catch up.

But the real chaos didn’t begin until the thieves came back and tried something even more ridiculous. What followed turned into a surreal showdown involving roommates, random weapons, and a stolen car the thieves insisted was theirs. The exchange was so absurd that even the OP couldn’t believe what he yelled next.

A man confronts thieves twice in one night after hearing his old Honda try to start

'I “stole” a car from a car thief?'

I woke up one night to the sound of my 95 Honda Civic trying to start.

It wouldn’t start because the thief hadn’t found the k__l switch.

There’s a lot of car theft in my city and those old Hondas are easy targets so I’m glad I had that installed.

I ran outside in my underwear, and just shouted from the porch as deep and loud as I could, “Hey! What the f__k are you doing!”

And then two people ran out of the car and down the street.

The shouting woke up my roommates and they came downstairs to see what was up.

We peeked around but the thieves had run off.

Then a few minutes later I hear the engine trying to start again.

So I shout for my roommates to come back and we all ran outside in our underwear and pajamas.

One guy had a skateboard, one guy grabbed a bat.

So we’re just all standing on the porch, not trying to get physical, just shouting at them.

The one thief yells back from another Honda parked just a few feet away from mine.

“No this is my car! We’re just trying to get away it’s my car.”

Idk what came over me but I shouted back “no that’s MY car now! That’s MINE!”

And they just were like “uhh okay man” and ran off.

I couldn’t believe that worked but I think it only worked

because of my three other roommates with the underwear and skateboard and bat.

I called the police right away and stayed outside watching for them but they didn’t come back.

The police checked “their” car (or my new car) and found that it was stolen of course.

So the owner got his car back I guess. And I’m so glad I had that k__l switch.

Anyone who has ever had their safety disrupted in the middle of the night knows how quickly fear can flip into adrenaline.

In OP’s situation, the mix of panic, anger, and protectiveness was immediate; this wasn’t just about a car; it was about feeling invaded in a place that should feel safe. OP’s roommates rushing out in pajamas and underwear only shows how instinctively people come together when danger hits close to home.

And underneath all the chaos was a simple emotional truth: OP wanted control in a moment where someone else tried to take it away.

Psychologically, OP’s behavior makes sense. When someone feels threatened, the “fight” response can activate even when they don’t intend to be violent.

Yelling, asserting dominance, even claiming the thief’s car as “mine now”, those actions weren’t planned. They were instinctive attempts to reestablish power over a situation that felt violating.

For the thieves, getting caught in the act created panic too, which explains why they tried to pretend the stolen car belonged to them and then quickly abandoned the lie when confronted by four half-dressed people with a skateboard and a bat.

A fresh perspective adds another layer: what OP experienced wasn’t just fear, it was territorial instinct. Many people laugh at the “I’m taking YOUR stolen car!” line, but from a behavioral standpoint, OP was mirroring the thief’s own tactic.

While most people naturally try to defend what’s theirs, a smaller group instinctively counters an intruder’s claim with an even stronger claim, which can psychologically destabilize the intruder. In this case, it worked perfectly.

According to Jason Tougaw, the author of The Elusive Brain: Literary Experiments in the Age of Neuroscience, humans rely heavily on rapid, emotional decision-making when threatened. He explains that “the brain’s fear system is designed to act first and think later,” creating fast, protective behaviors before logic has time to catch up.

This insight makes the moment clearer: OP’s statements weren’t about being clever, they were the brain’s way of taking back control before fear could take over. And ironically, that boldness, combined with community support, protected both OP and the stolen car nearby.

In the end, this story shows how strange, funny, and human fear can be and how sometimes instinct can save the day in ways no one expects.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These users cheered the accidental heroics

McMema − Captain Underwear, out righting wrongs, and bringing peace to the city, one recovered Honda at a time. Legend

KenTheStud − A lot of criminals are cowards. Confront them and they bolt pretty quickly.

Annual_Head_2858 − Superheroes don’t always wear a cape.

But they always wear their underwear on top of their pants. Or just underwear.

Pure_Jackfruit8929 − When I(F) was 18yo I twarted an attempted break in at my mom’s house only wearing mismatched socks.

Nothing else. I was home alone though I think my mom’s crossbow pointed at him (it wasn’t loaded)

freaked him out more cause he biffed it down the patio stairs bolting. Went back to bed after 🤷‍♀️

Tremenda-Carucha − You just screamed at some thieves like they were in a damn movie... and it worked?

That's gotta be one of the weirdest things I've ever heard.

But hey, if yelling in your underwear can stop a car theft, what else can people pull off when they're not thinking straight?

This cluster jumped in with their own wild, real-life thief encounters

G-reeper66 − My wife has an 18" dildo from her hen night many years ago.

We had someone break into our house, I grabbed that thing and went quietly downstairs.

I confronted the person as he was putting my laptop into his bag and twatted him round the head with the dildo.

He was knocked out as he hit his head on the wall. The cops arrived and took all the details,

including our in home security camera footage of him breaking in then getting hit with the dildo.

At his trial (prolific burglar) the prosecution played the video as he was claiming I assaulted him,

the judge (female) threw that out and loved the fact that I was happy in my masculinity to wield such a mighty weapon.

That item is still kept in our bedroom in case it's ever needed to be used in anger again.

Jbeth74 − I stole a bike from someone breaking into my car that was in my driveway.

Came out and yelled at him, he jumped on his bike but I grabbed him by the collar and back of his pants and yoinked him off.

He took off running and I took the bike home. Funniest part is I’m 5’2 and was very pregnant at the time.

I don’t think the guy ever looked back after he heard me yell and had no idea.

mcfilms − I hate to be a downer, but my story is sort of the flip side of this.

About 25 years ago in North Hollywood a friend of mine had a ridiculously early call time.

So he went down to his apartment garage at like 4AM and saw someone trying to steal a car. Not his car, but a neighbor's.

He started screaming at the thief and they took off. My friend gave chase down the alley.

By this time someone woke up in the apartment above and reported what happend next.

The thief never turned around. He pulled a gun out and shot twice blindly behind him as he ran.

One of those bullets caught my friend and he bled out and died in the alley. I miss you Darius.

You were trying to do a good thing and died for it. I still think about you often.

Queenofhackenwack − my teenaged cousin had a house party when his parents were not home.

I saw all the s__t going on when i just happened to drive by, so i banged a "U ie" and parked in front of the driveway,

just as another snot-nosed teenage boy pulled up on a 10 speed bike ( nice bike)

he was yelling that he stole it to get to the party....... I waited for him to go inside and put the bike in my trunk, took it to the...

I hope whoever owned it got it back never got it back

JPeety1 − Had a 78 thunderbird that I had given to me, that had the ignition switch busted to get i

out of the storage unit it was in ( cousin forgot the keys for it).

It had the B&M rachet floor shifter installed in it instead of using the column shifter.

I rigged up a master k__l switch with a solid black rocker switch hidden on the shifter casing.

I used the tiny push button on the B&M shifter handle to activate the starter.

Had several people try to take the car but they couldn't figure out how to start it.

Hot-Celebration-8815 − I was into the street racing scene when I was young.

A bunch of my friends had illegally suped up cars (I just went to watch).

My buddy got his car stolen out of his driveway Thursday night.

There’s this gas station in everyone would stop at before actually going to where the races took place.

We’re all just standing around, and Fernando goes: “I think that’s my car.”

We rolled deep to these things, like 20 or so guys, so we surrounded the car until the thieves came back,

got the keys from them, and stole back Fernando’s car.

As they drove off a couple cars followed them and the rest of us couldn’t catch up.

Cops were called, and they were actually arrested for stealing back their own car and having a knife

(which was from the thieves, total Bull s__t).

But the funny part is that they made a few upgrades to his engine! So it wasn’t a total loss.

These commenters highlighted the humor and heart behind the story

Fun-Distribution-159 − They saw your massive balls and said yeah we don't want none of that.

pappyvanwinkle1111 − They must have seen that you boys were packing.

vanesr2003 − As someone who has gotten their truck who belong to her dad

before he passed stolen I thank you for stealing a car from a thief.

What do you think, brave instinct, lucky timing, or pure chaotic energy? And would you run outside in your underwear to defend your car? Share your thoughts below!
