In every family, there’s always that one person who, whether intentionally or not, sets off a chain of events that causes endless drama. But in some families, it’s the quiet moments that turn into stories worth remembering, like the time a simple, poorly wrapped gift became the source of a 10-year-long revenge plot.

For one man, the ultimate prank involved four ugly clay pots, a wedding, and a slow-burning plan that spanned across years and siblings. What began as a slight disappointment soon morphed into a family-wide event, and the final reveal left everyone in stitches. Keep reading to see how one gift sparked an unforgettable family tradition.

A dad gets a decade-long revenge on his sister by passing around her old wedding gift until it reaches her again

not the actual photo

'Dad got decade long revenge on my aunty?'

A little set-up: My dad is one of 9 children to my grandparents.

When the oldest sister (my aunty) let's call her Margaret got married, one of the gifts she received was four very poorly made

clay pots from one of her friends who wasn't super close to the family.

They were all very different to each other and didn't match at all. I assume they came out of a first-timers pottery class or something.

Anyway, fast forward 15 years and my parents are getting married. Margaret shows up at the wedding.

As does everyone else. The ceremony and reception pass with no dramas and everyone goes home.

The following week my parents begin to sort through all their wedding gifts.

Unwrap Margarets to find a very old worn-looking cardboard box with the old tape still underneath

the new tape put on there by Margaret to hold the lid closed.

Dad opens the box to see the 4 pots that had been given to Margaret 15 years prior.

My parents knew this was a gift to Margaret originally because at the bottom of the box

was a card of congratulations on your wedding... addressed to Margaret.

She hadn't even bothered to take the pots out of the box when she was gifted them or checked the condition when rewrapping them.

This thoroughly pissed off my dad.

Then his anger turned to determination as he started to develop a plan that would stretch almost a decade.

With Christmas fast approaching my dad rewrapped the pots in the same box with the same wedding card addressed to Margaret.

Essentially in the same condition he had received it in. He then wrote another card addressed to another of his siblings explaining his plan.

He gave the present to the youngest of his siblings, the newer card explained that she was to hold on to the pots until the next Christmas,

making sure to unwrap it and make sure that everyone could see the pots in one way or another.

The card then explained to leave the wedding card in the box and to not let anyone see it.

My aunty would then hold on to the box, pots and card until next Christmas.

She would then gift them and my dads note to the next sibling above her in age (my uncle).

This cycle would repeat another 8 times until it reached the oldest sibling. Margaret.

In my dad's letter, he instructed the last sibling before Margaret not to give her the letter written by him regarding the plan.

9 years after giving the gift away.

My dad and all his siblings watched as she pulled out the pots

that she had seen being passed around from sister to brother to sister for the last decade.

She then noticed the note still in the box. She opened it and a category 4.2 earthquake was registered as her jaw hit the floor.

Now, most people would expect her to erupt in rage but Australians have some of the best senses of humour on the planet.

The family all had a good chuckle about it and moved on to Christmas lunch.

The pots are now separated. one going to my dad, Margaret, my grandparents and the last being the trophy of the annual cricket game.

It was sadly destroyed by a rouge ball in that very same yearly tournament and is now only half a trophy.. Hope you enjoyed.

Edit: Thanks so much for the awards. They’re actually my first ever 😂

Sometimes, the best revenge isn’t about anger or retribution but about waiting patiently and letting time and circumstances do the work for you.

In this story, OP’s dad demonstrates that the most satisfying revenge can sometimes come not from confronting the problem directly but by letting a long-term plan unfold. The result is not just a humorous conclusion but a deeper sense of justice and closure.

At its core, this story isn’t just about the pots or the prank. It’s about family dynamics and how, in some families, humor becomes the ultimate vehicle for resolving tension.

OP’s dad had every right to feel frustrated after being given a poorly reused gift that had been neglected, but instead of lashing out, he devised a slow, methodical plan. This approach reflects a concept known as passive-aggression, where unresolved frustration is expressed indirectly rather than directly.

As psychologist Dr. Jennifer Thomas, co-author of Emotional Intelligence 2.0, explains, “Passive-aggressive behavior often stems from feelings of powerlessness, but in cases like this, it can become a form of humorous justice.”

While the act might seem small, it’s clear that for OP’s dad, the situation was more than a petty revenge. He exercised a great deal of delayed gratification, a strategy of putting off immediate satisfaction for a more significant, long-term goal.

As Dr. Roy Baumeister, a psychologist known for his research on self-regulation, describes, delayed gratification involves “resisting the temptation for an immediate reward and waiting for a later reward.”

OP’s dad patiently waited nine years for the moment when Margaret would face the consequences of her actions. The payoff came not through confrontation, but by waiting for her to realize the absurdity of what had transpired.

When Margaret finally received the pots back after years of passing them between siblings, she reacted not with anger but with laughter, a response that reflects the humor and resilience often present in Australian culture. Humor can act as a powerful emotional buffer, allowing people to cope with tension in a way that diffuses potential conflict.

The Gottman Institute, experts on relationship dynamics, suggests that humor in families is often used to cope with stressful situations and can strengthen relationships through shared laughter.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters laughed at the “long game” of turning a low-quality gift into something treasured

Alexis_J_M − The pots have been turned from a low quality gift to a treasured family heirloom. Well done.

CoderJoe1 − Your dad plotted potted his vengeance well.

rde42 − I thought all cricket balls were rouge.

These Redditors imagined even bigger plot twists involving the pots

ShowMeTheTrees − Plot twist: one relative takes a pot to Antiques Roadshow, Australia edition.

Turns out that they're some of the rarest and most valuable ancient pottery known.

Likely worth 10 million and the appraiser suggests that it belongs in a museum.

HollidaySchaffhausen − He could have just told her thanks for the pots.

He took them to antique road show and the curators said their from some clap pot era and estimated their worth to be $15,000.

Then build a fake website detailing how the price is going up every year.

These commenters appreciated the wholesome twist in the prank and how it evolved into a beloved family tradition

ladyoflothlorien36 − I wasn’t expecting anything nearly as wholesome!

Monkey_Leavings − Kudos for your dad playing the long game! I'd have just sent Aunty Margaret

a Thank-you note gushing about the lovely pots and the generous gift she'd included in the card at the bottom.

These users shared their own humorous family traditions, like pranks passed down through generations and communal gifts

inoffensive_nickname − This reminds me of a prank between my Dad and my uncle Rhett (Mom's BIL)

that was passed to my stepfather when my Dad was out of the picture.

Mom had a nutty old auntie who we'll call Aunt Annie who lived up the hill from her sister in the rural mountains of Arkansas.

Annie was widowed very young, and didn't have any kids.

She was a stereotypical plump little old hillbilly with no teeth, and looked like she should be sitting on a porch rocker smoking a corn cob pipe.

She was relatively harmless, but she was a horny old bitty, probably late 50's by this point, who took a liking to my Dad who was in his late 20's.

One hot day, when my parents were visiting Mom's other aunt (the lovely sister to Aunt Annie),

Dad was wearing shorts and laying halfway behind the stove fixing something and felt something on his leg, and a voice saying,

"DaAaAaAve, you want some of this?" It was Annie, grinding on his leg in her house dress and not wearing any undies.

Dad shot out from behind the stove like his b__t was on fire, yelling and cussing at her to get the hell away from him.

Annie was appropriately chastised by anyone who heard this

and she didn't come around much when my parents were around after that.

Mom's BIL, who was good friends with Dad at the time but not there, heard about it

and teased him relentlessly about his "affair" with Aunt Annie for a long time after this incident happened.

(It was all in good spirits...Uncle Rhett knew when to back off.)

That Christmas, Aunt Annie sent Mom and Dad a Christmas card with a full-length picture of herself, and "Love, Annie" written in the corner.

Uncle Rhett got wind of this and the teasing started again.

The next year, Uncle Rhett received a Christmas card from Dad with the picture of Annie.

Over the years, Dad and Uncle Rhett mailed that picture to each other a couple of dozen times over various holidays.

When Mom remarried a few years later, Uncle Rhett and my stepfather became friends and shared stories,

including the story of Annie's attempted seduction, and Uncle Rhett kept telling SF that he'd have loved Annie

(who was long gone by this point), but SF was a little squeamish because of the grinding incident,

so of course Uncle Rhett started teasing SF and the joke lived on.

Mom found that picture and encouraged SF to mail it to Uncle Rhett for Christmas,

and that picture went back and forth between Uncle Rhett and SF for several more years until Uncle Rhett passed on.

I'm not sure where the picture ultimately ended up, but my Uncle Rhett had the best sense of humor.

He was a gentle teaser who knew how to have fun without hurting people.

MaybeDressageQueen − We have a communal birthday card in my dad's family.

It gets passed around and around and around, chock full of post-it notes but nothing written on the actual cardstock.

The original sender was my aunt who noted that the card itself was the gift, left blank intentionally so that it could be reused.

This Redditor shared their own heartwarming memories about family heirlooms and objects that carry emotional significance

dmsoab − When my great-grandma died many years ago and everyone was going through her belongings sorting everything out oh,

there was a cookie jar. My god there was a cookie jar.

It was ugly, kind of small so you couldn't fit very many cookies in it, but nobody wanted to get rid of it.

So eventually one of the grandchildren accepted responsibility for it.

But as a Twist, as we were leaving He Slipped it into our vehicle, his older brothers vehicle. We didn't find it until we got back home.

From that point on the cookie jar has been left at multiple family residences over the years. Nobody talks about it, it just appears.

Do you think this elaborate scheme was an act of love, or was it just a hilarious revenge plot? How would you have handled it if you were Margaret? Share your thoughts and join the conversation below!
