Costco Shopper Faces Impatient Driver Trying To Rush Him, Here’s What He Did To Make Him Pay!

We’ve all been there, trying to load groceries into our car, and someone impatiently waits for us to finish so they can take our spot. Most people would simply hurry up to avoid conflict, but one man decided to teach the impatient driver a lesson in patience.

A recent Reddit post tells the story of a Costco encounter where the man, tired of being rushed, turned a simple loading routine into a five-minute ordeal of sweet, slow revenge. Here’s how one Costco shopper got back at a driver who thought they could rush him out of his spot.

A man delays leaving his Costco parking spot for five minutes to get back at an impatient driver

'Do not mess with me at Costco?'

A couple weeks ago after checking out at Costco I was doing the normal routine for loading purchased items into the vehicle:

I quickly and efficiently transferred everything from the cart to bags in the backseat of my truck.

This usually takes me about 90 seconds to do before returning the cart.

I don't like to hold strangers up and generally want to get home and swim around in my Costco purchases like a middle aged Scrooge McDuck.

Halfway through said process some guy pulls up behind my truck and puts on his signal, intending to take my space as soon as I'm done.

No problem! I'm moving fast. But then this jerk has the audacity to look impatient after about 3 seconds and vigorously waves for me to hurry up.

Seriously dude, you just got here and are trying to rush me? My process is flawless, and you have the gall to act like I need to hop to your...

This triggered my pettiness. I'm sorry my dude but I'm not longer in control of what happens.

This is between you and Petty-Me now. I'm just an innocent bystander...

So I immediately stopped my fast and efficient process of packing the vehicle, and switched to molasses mode.

I slooowwwlyyyy moved every item in. One at a time.

I pulled out a bag of seaweed snacks and started to look over the top of my glasses to really examine it.

I slowly read it's description out loud, thenI looked around as if to find a bystander to discuss this purchase with.

I resumed. More items went in. When he looked like he was about to give up I'd act like I was done.

Then discover, nope! More items still in the cart. I d__g this on for about five minutes,

making him wallow in place, trapped by the sunken cost of how long he already waited.

I'm now done, and getting behind the wheel. He seemed relieved, like the blood vessel he was about to rupture with impotent rage was finally easing.

So I back my truck up. Slowly. I stop. Pull forward to reposition, and the slowly back to again.

I'm channeling my inner Colin Robinson, and making this process as excruciating as possible.

I backed up slowly, far more than I needed until he thought I was going to hit him and started to honk. And finally I drive away.

I know this doesn't compare to most petty stuff on here, but it amused me and I wanted to share.

Edit: I forgot to mention the cart return was directly opposite my truck in the aisle.

I'm quite tall and took very slow deliberate strides.

Unfortunately the return was empty or I would have spent time nesting and adjusting all the carts for better spiritual alignment

Edit 2: I forgot the other masterstroke of time wasting: sitting there with the reverse lights on but not moving.

Knowing the slight surge of relief thinking I'm finally going to leave,

when in reality I was describing to my partner what's been going on, and why I'm wasting time.

Ever had someone rush you just because they want your spot and felt that itch to say “nope, not today”? That feeling hits hard. For OP, the impatient driver at Costco attacked a basic expectation: respect for his space and time. That small gesture, a wave to hurry up, touched a nerve. We all know that feeling: “Why am I being rushed when I’m not done?” The frustration surfaces fast.

Psychologically, this kind of reaction falls under what researchers refer to as reactive aggression or displaced frustration. According to the classic Frustration–Aggression Hypothesis, when our goal (finishing loading the car calmly) is blocked by someone else’s impatience, that frustration can spark aggressive impulses even if the other person’s “offense” seems trivial.

Studies on aggression show that when anger flares up, the brain’s “fight‑or‑flight” system kicks in: heart rate spikes, rational thinking takes a back seat, and impulses can run wild.

In that moment, it feels powerful to reclaim control to force the other person into the same discomfort they tried to impose on you. That’s likely why OP slowed down deliberately, lingering over each bag and backing up slowly. It’s a psychological attempt to even the odds, to say: “You don’t get to rush me with impunity.”

From a social‑psychological angle, what OP did also channels something called “social undermining.” That term describes when one person uses subtle (or not so subtle) actions to hinder or frustrate another’s goals, often as a form of payback for perceived disrespect.

OP wasn’t seeking a fight. He just refused to bow to unreasonable pressure and used small but deliberate moves to push back.

That said, and this is worth noting, even small, “harmless” aggression tends to carry emotional baggage. Experts on passive‑aggressive and reactive behavior warn that delaying, punishing, or withholding can feed a cycle of resentment and tense interactions.

What felt cathartic in the moment may chip away at one’s own calm and carry over, making you more reactive to future slights, more keyed into expecting disrespect.

So yes, OP’s reaction was emotionally understandable. He felt rushed, disrespected, and powerless. Letting that sting could have just burned you from the inside, and instead, he used action to create a little space, a little justice.

But from a long‑term perspective, it probably doesn’t do much good. Waiting five minutes to load groceries, then slowly inching out of the lot, might satisfy in the moment, but it also reinforces a habit of confrontation, of unspoken hostility.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

This group enjoys retaliating against impatient drivers by taking their sweet time and leaving them frustrated

[Reddit User] − I once did this to a silly cow that even beeped at me to hurry up.

I got into the car, started it up, my reverse lights came on (she was practically touching my bumper at this point)...

then I turned off the car, got out and decided to get a coffee for the journey home.

SaltyPopcornColonel − "I don't like to hold strangers up and generally want to get home

and swim around in my Costco purchases like a middle aged Scrooge McDuck." This, and the pettiness...I want to marry you.

Veblen1 − "Darn, I forgot to buy toothpaste. This won't take long, pal! "

GrannyWeatherwaxscat − I once had someone do that so I remembered that I’d forgotten something in the shop.

So I shut my boot, returned my trolley and went back into the shop and bought a packet of crisps.

T3chnological − Something like this happened to my mum.

Dude pulls up as she’s loading her shopping in the car, he honks n waves, she ignores him. Dude winds down the window and shouts “are you moving?”

Again she ignores him, locks the car up n walks back into the shop for a cuppa, lol.

These users also love the idea of casually ignoring honkers while extending their time in a petty manner

Big-Cream4952 − Bonus points for the Colin Robinson reference

jeffreywilfong − The trick is to never wait for a spot. It's always faster to go park farther away than walk, then wait for somebody to finish what they're doing.

The only way I'll wait for a spot is if you are actively backing out and preventing me from going around you.

PsychologicalBit5422 − Did you walk your trolley back and have "trouble" relocking to get your coin back.

(We have coin shopping carts here, put your dollar in, get it back if you return the cart properly)

NemeshisuEM − I've done this. I didn't slow things down though. I just sat in my car and lit a smoke.

When the dude got out of his car to tell me to move, I told him my wife was inside getting us some pizza and the line at the food...

It might take a while. The wife was at home.

Metroknight − Been there and done that to someone at a local walmart.

I was just finishing up my packing the purchases into the SUV and closed the lid to my cooler

(had icepacks for the refrigerator stuff) when this person rolls and starts honking at me to move.

So I stopped and looked at them before locking my suv (ford explorer) and pushing my buggy back to the store (the buggy corral was two spaces away).

After walking back to my vehicle, they rolled their window down and complained that

I was taking to long so I pulled out my phone briefly to look at it as if I got a text and walked back inside.

I stood inside the entrance area to see them wait another minute or two before starting to roll past my vehicle.

As soon as they rolled past I walked out and over to my suv.

They turned down the next aisle to come back around but I pulled out and another vehicle took it so they did not get that space.

At this time over 2/3rds of the parking lot was full so that person would have to circle around the lot to find a spot or park over halfway down...

This group shares hilarious, elaborate stories of outsmarting entitled drivers with unexpected and amusing twists

mynipplesareconfused − Deliciously petty and I love the Colin Robinson attitude.

Once, I was at the local ren faire and was putting my props and extra costume pieces away so I could drive.

A woman had pulled up and sat there. She rolled the window down, asked me if I could hurry up because she wanted the spot.

I smiled, said yes, and then promptly closed the car door, locked it, and went straight back to the faire.

I got all day to waste if it means an entitled person doesn't get their way.

She had waited on my spot for over 10 minutes and I made her start the process over again.

yarghmatey − I love this particular brand of petty revenge.

I am still amused by a time when I and some of my friends were teenagers doing Christmas shopping at a crowded mall.

The parking lot was packed and some jerk decided to follow us as we walked to our car,

driving practically on our heels and beeping to hurry us up so he could take our spot. We started wandering between aisles but he kept following.

Finally we're cold so we go to my friend's van, sloooowly loaded our bags in, took our sweet time piling in and buckling up,

backed out ever so carefully all while this middle aged guy honked, yelled, and waved his arms around dramatically.

Just as we were pulling out I yelled for my friend to stop, then said we should go back in the mall.

So she pulled back in and we all piled back out and went back to the mall for no reason other than to see his head explode. It was glorious

[Reddit User] − I’ve had a similar experience at Costco. Some one was honking at me to hurry up so they could have

My spot. Well... I hadn’t bought anything perishable, so I closed my tailgating and decided I needed to go back into the store to pee.

It sent “honking dude” into a near apoplexy. It was priceless!

What do you think? Was his petty revenge deserved, or did he go too far? Let us know your thoughts below!
