Family visits are usually harmless, maybe a little awkward, but nothing more. Still, there are moments when a simple get-together quietly sets off consequences no one sees coming, especially when trust is involved.

In this AITA story, a young woman who writes as a hobby makes a shocking discovery about her sister-in-law after trying to show support. What begins as confusion quickly turns into anger and a difficult moral choice.

Now she is left wondering whether standing up for herself is worth tearing her family apart. Scroll down to read what happened next.

WIBTA if I sue my SIL for stealing my book and making a huge profit from it?

I (24f) write as a hobby, and I like sharing my short stories with my small following.

I do want to publish one day, but I want to make it perfect first, since it's not edited yet.

The unfinished book we're talking about came from an idea that I started to build

when I was in middle school. I just finished it last year, but because of the virus,

I was forced to put that project aside to ensure steady employment with my day job.

My brother and SIL came to visit me to introduce their baby daughter about 6 months ago.

SIL just thrusted her baby into my arms even though I lack even the barest knowledge on how to hold a baby.

The baby was fussy and my brother helped calm her down

while SIL said she wanted to use to bathroom to pump b__ast milk.

They left later and I didn't think anything of it until recently that I was told SIL had published a book,

and it had been a while since she published. Self-publish is not as time-consuming as traditional publishing.

I don't doubt my SIL's intelligence because she is a smart woman,

but I've always heard how she dislikes books cause they're boring and drags on.

I wanted to show my support and brought a copy only to realize it's way too similar to mine.

I compared it to my copy of unpublished work; it's obvious it's been edited and proofread for fluidity and clarity.

I was angry and I admit I overreacted by confronting her over the phone.

She said my screaming was upsetting her and hung up on me.

It was a back and forth battle with phone numbers to get to the truth.

By this time, my parents and her parents are involved.

UPDATE: Things did not go as planned. I can't give you an update now, but soon. Really sorry.

Little update on the apology: it's not out. She said she needed more time to prepare her emotional state

and she's overworked with their child, but she'll let me know when I can have the apology.

Thank you everyone for giving me advice on how to proceed with this mess.

After speaking with my pre-law friend, I decided to go the legal route.

I reiterated my compromise with SIL and my brother, but he has fully taken her side.

My parents warned me that I'd be disowned and I'd be dead to them if I'm willing to stoop so low.

I hired a lawyer and given all the details on my side.

My lawyer said she needs my unedited manuscript for the book

and my SIL's published book along with the copy SIL sent to have it proofread and edited.

Because the published book has different parts changed, my lawyer needs the unedited version

which SIL should still have in the transaction she did with her editor and proofreader.

We took the risk to ask SIL for the unedited copy she sent to her editor & proofreader despite the chance of having her feign

"I don't remember their names, I don't have their contacts anymore, I don't want to, etc."

I told SIL that we will go through the route of having to use third-party notarization to ensure no foul play on either part

(have 1 individual look at my unedited manuscript and the one she sent to her hired editor + proofreader).

Once I told her that, she must've realized I was not bluffing. SIL and my brother accepted the compromise

(I take the pseudonym, the royalties, with evidence of sold copies).

I stipulated that SIL must put a message out to her followers on her blog that she stole from me

and not a single word in the book is hers. I thank the Redditors for suggesting that.

She is clearly pissed off and disgusted with me for doing this to my own family.

I threatened her with further legal proceedings if she didn't do it.

No lawsuit happened, but I'm glad I got a professional option just in case.

As words got back to my parents of what I did and how dare I got a lawyer to punish SIL

because her blog followers will surely lose trust in her and future revenue.

I told them and my parents that if they have anything to say, use my business email. I'm done with them.

They treated an outsider (SIL one month into dating my brother) better than they ever did to me.

I don't need that negativity dragging me down. I'm happier, more free with my opinions,

and I don't have to feel the need to compete with everything SIL does just to get my parents

to love me a little more than a daughter in name.

I have my friends; they've always been more of a family unit to me than my biological ones.

I knew I was going to lose something coming out of this,

but I didn't expect I'd be okay with the disappointment and hurt.

Thank you, everyone. And no, I will not be telling anyone what the name of the book is

because I only came here to get a moral judgment and update everyone on what happened.

Please don't think I'm using this for clout.

The book will not be promoted on Reddit: not then, not now, and not in the future either.

There are few emotional wounds as sharp as the ache of betrayal by someone you trusted. When what was meant to be support or kinship turns into a violation of deeply-held beliefs or creations, the hurt doesn’t stay neatly contained it seeps into identity, belonging, and sense of safety.

In this story, the OP was not just reacting to a stolen manuscript; she was responding to a rupture of trust that cut close to her sense of self and worth.

At its core, this situation wasn’t merely about intellectual property; it was about the experience of betrayal and family dynamics. Discovering that a sister-in-law published a book that mirrors one’s own work would naturally trigger feelings of shock, anger, and disbelief.

For someone who has nurtured a creative project since middle school, seeing that idea seemingly mirrored in another person’s success can feel like an erasure of one’s effort and voice.

This emotional impact is heightened when family allegiance is uneven: when one sibling aligns with the partner rather than the creator, the sense of abandonment can deepen.

Betrayal, especially from a trusted figure within the family, often bleeds into personal identity, leaving the betrayed person grappling with confusion about fairness, loyalty, and self-worth.

Expert insight sheds light on why this feels so destabilizing. According to research on betrayal trauma a well-established concept in psychology, when trust is violated by someone close, the emotional response mirrors that of trauma, because social bonds are encoded in the brain much like survival relationships.

Intense emotional distress, hypervigilance, and disrupted trust are common when betrayal originates from a person we rely on for connection and support.

This psychological framework helps explain why the OP’s reaction was so visceral and why the fallout with her family cut deeper than any financial loss. The pain was not only about the alleged theft, but about feeling unseen, dismissed, or devalued by those she cared about most.

What appears simply as a conflict over a manuscript is experienced neurologically as a rupture of safety and belonging.

Understanding these emotional and relational dynamics provides perspective on the OP’s choices: pursuing legal counsel, setting boundaries with family, and prioritizing her well-being and friendships.

In complex betrayals, especially within families, realigning one’s support network and clarifying boundaries is often more healing than seeking validation from those who enabled the harm.

True resolution isn’t found in “winning” a dispute but in reclaiming agency, rebuilding trust with oneself, and cultivating relationships grounded in respect and honesty.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These Redditors fiercely called out SIL’s hypocrisy and defended OP against family blame

DBCOOPER888 − She is clearly pissed off and disgusted with me for doing this to my own family.

She's a f__king h__ocrite for stealing your work in the first place.

cyberrella − NTA She is clearly pissed off and disgusted with me for doing this to my own family.

Your family should be pissed off and disgusted at her for what she has done.

As words got back to my parents of what I did and how dare I got a lawyer to punish SIL

because her blog followers will surely lose trust in her and future revenue.

What the f is wrong with your parents?

I hope she does the blog post, but what if she doesn't, what's the next step?

Ciryl_Lynyard − "She is clearly pissed off and digusted with me for doing this to my own family"

Send that hypocritical b__lshit back into her face She stole your work and tried to claim it as her own

and profit from it. Tell her you are pissed

and disgusted she would even think of doing that let alone to her own family

Hey-im-kpuff − So do your parents not understand that she STOLE from you?

These commenters questioned whether SIL would actually post an apology or dodge accountability

trawac4 − Very curious when she will post the update on her blog.

She says she will, but is there a date specified, or has she done it?

I wonder if she will try to avoid doing that to save face with her “followers”

Repulsive_Bug − Hi OP, was wondering if there’s any good news? Hope you got your public apology

queen0fgreen − Wow, they really cared more about her 'future' than the fact that she was a liar and a thief.

S__ew all of them. Did she make the blog post?

These users praised OP for standing up for their work and seeking fair justice

Rellax_ − Props on not taking it further

and making it even more personal with a lawsuit to compensate you for what she’s done.

Plus there are criminal charges to add for stolen intellect property.

She could’ve been fined (at minimum) and need to pay you a lot more than just what she’s made.

CafuneRoyalty − Good on you for getting justice for your work. I'm sorry that your family is crqp

TypicalManagement680 − It’s their loss, glad you stood up for yourself and got some justice. Be well!

This group criticized the “but family” excuse and supported legal accountability for theft

gamefuzz30 − I'm glad it worked out in some way for you.

Never understood the you don't do that to family people in these situations.

It's okay for family to steal or do something horrible to you

but if you retaliate in a logical and legal manner Suddenly It's family you need to forgive and forget.

I'm glad you cut them out let's see how much they care about family when she starts stealing from them.

Or better yet when they have to sacrifice for her because "family".

Mysterious_Ad7461 − Wild how the thing they can’t imagine someone doing to family is hold them accountable

for their theft of IP, but not the part where she stole it

This group focused on OP’s emotional well-being and encouraged distance from toxic family dynamics

ecc_lesiatheholy − As Long as you treat your Sister a Long Vacation for a while to you know,

stress out and have a calm mind again. Then, probably no more calamities and earthquakes ever again.

theconduit3 − I’m happy that you’re content with your situation and received a result you’re pleased with.

However, I just wanted to say that I’m sorry you’re family treats you the way they do.

I know how that feels, it really takes quite a lot out of you.

Questioning your adequacy in life by the people who brought you into this world really does take its toll.

I believe that you’re correct in drawing a line in the sand.

However, I can imagine it’s not the result you hoped for whatsoever.

The result you hoped for was, one, your SIL didn’t steal from you, and two,

your family should’ve put their foot down and stood by your side through it all.

I’m sorry your families priorities are skewed. I just thought you should know that, from someone you do not know.

I wish for you the very best in life and hopefully one day,

your parents and brother will realize how wrong they were and apologize. Good luck.

In the end, this wasn’t just a story about a stolen manuscript; it was about choosing self-worth over silence. While many readers applauded the Redditor for standing her ground, others couldn’t help but flinch at the family fractures left behind.

Still, the overwhelming response leaned toward one idea: creative labor deserves protection, no matter who crosses the line.

Was drawing legal boundaries the only way forward, or did the cost outweigh the victory? How would you handle a betrayal that came wrapped in family ties? Share your thoughts below.
