Man Blasted by Sister for Bringing His Partner to a Gathering Because of “Past Trauma”

Family gatherings are usually meant for birthday cakes and warm hugs. We look forward to seeing the people who knew us when we were little. But sometimes, a long-hidden grudge or a strange piece of history can turn a happy celebration into a complete fiasco. This is exactly what happened when one young man decided to bring his partner to his mom’s big day.

He thought he was just bringing his boyfriend and their sweet daughter to celebrate. However, his brother-in-law had a very different perspective on the guest list. A story from the past involving a babysitter and a divorce came bubbling up to the surface. Before the night was over, names were called and a little girl’s feelings were hurt. It is a story that makes us ask where boundaries truly end. Let’s look at the drama that unfolded.

The Story

AITA for taking my boyfriend and his daughter to my family gathering knowing it would make my BIL uncomfortable ?

Hey everyone ! So, I know the title is awful, but that's literally what went on. For a bit of context, I (M22) have been dating

my boyfriend Marc (M27) for two years. He has a daughter Lily, (F7), which is important for the story. I met my Marc five years ago, when

I began babysitting his daughter while he worked, (single dad, mom is deceased), and since Lily and I got along great, I became the "sole" babysitter when

he needed. It was practical because we were living two streets apart, and just overall the best choice because I was available, liked them and they liked me.

But eventually, him and I fell in love, and I quickly moved in with him and his daughter, to whom I became a second dad. But here's

the core of the problem, my sister (F35) is married to my BIL (M33), so every family gathering, I see him. He's relatively a nice guy, though

we're not friends, but he never met Marc. When I started dating Marc, he didn't want to come to my family gatherings at first, because he's not

comfortable around people, he's a shy guy, and of course I understood that. But last week, it was my mom's birthday, and she really wanted him and

our daughter to be there, so he finally accepted. When my sister and my BIL found out he would be there, they were mad at me, and I

didn't understood why at first, until she took me apart and called me insensitive and egoistic toward my BIL for inviting him, even though I had no

idea why it made him uncomfortable. Apparently, when he was young, his parents divorced because his dad cheated with his babysitter, and it caused him a "traumatism".

I told her it was b__lshit, that my boyfriend was part of my life, part of my family and I wouldn't exclude him because her husband was uncomfortable.

I also reminded her that there was no cheating, no breaking of trust or anything in my relationship with Marc, but she just called me insensitive again

and left. My mom's birthday party was two days ago, and my family loved Marc and Lily. But all day, my sister and BIL kept glaring at us

and muttering insults or mean comments under their breath. They brought it up again after dinner, but directly to my boyfriend and our daughter this time, telling

her that "your dad and his boyfriend are disgusting freaks" or that he's a "cheater who doesn't care about your dead mom". Obviously, my boyfriend and I

absolutely lost it against them. Knowing my boyfriend's temper, I told him to take our daughter to the car while I was ripping a new one to

my sister. We left shortly after, after apologizing to my mom for the mess it caused. Now, my family's group chat is divided, mostly everyone is on

our side, but a few of my extended relatives are on my sister/BIL's side, saying that we went too far, and should've just ignore them or went

back home. Now, I know that my mom asked for them to come, but I'm feeling really guilty that it ruined her birthday's to have this drama. So, AITA?

Reading about this party just makes me want to give that seven-year-old girl a giant hug. It is always so difficult when adults bring their own heavy baggage into a space where children are just trying to have fun. Lily has already lost her mother, and she deserves to feel totally safe and welcome in her second father’s family.

The fact that the brother-in-law held onto a resentment from his childhood and directed it at a couple who did nothing wrong is really baffling. It seems like he was looking for a reason to be unhappy rather than just enjoying the birthday festivities. Protecting your family from that kind of negativity is so important. Let’s see what the experts have to say about navigating these tricky family waters.

Expert Opinion

When we look at the brother-in-law’s reaction, it looks a lot like something called “trauma projection.” This happens when someone experiences a painful event in their past and sees a version of that pain in everyone else’s lives. Because his father once cheated with a babysitter, he has decided that all babysitter relationships are inherently bad. This is a very heavy way to walk through the world.

According to a report from Psych Central, unresolved childhood trauma can often cloud a person’s judgment as an adult. They might react to current events as if they are reliving their own history. However, it is never okay to use that history to attack others, especially when there was no wrongdoing in the current relationship. Marc and the narrator fell in love naturally over several years of knowing each other.

It is also vital to consider the impact on the child involved. Lily was subjected to very cruel words from her own relatives. Experts at The Gottman Institute highlight that creating a “culture of appreciation” is essential for a family’s health. Hurling labels like “freaks” or “cheater” creates the exact opposite. It creates an environment of fear and rejection for a young child.

A study from VeryWellMind on homophobia suggests that sometimes people use “trauma” as a shield for their own biases. By focusing on the babysitter story, the brother-in-law and sister might have been trying to hide their true discomfort with a same-sex couple. Regardless of the reason, attacking a grieving child about her deceased mother is a serious breach of family trust.

Neutral advice in this situation would suggest that the brother-in-law needs professional help to untangle his past from his present. Until then, it is likely best for the narrator to keep his distance. Your family’s safety should always come first. No one should have to apologize for existing happily and raising a loved child.

Community Opinions

The people on the internet had some very strong thoughts about this situation, especially regarding the brother-in-law’s behavior toward a child.

The community felt that the brother-in-law was projecting his own past onto a completely different and innocent situation.

DiligentGoat2406 − NTA. Let me get this straight—your sister and BIL wanted you to exclude your partner

and his daughter from a family event because of his unrelated childhood trauma?

That’s wild. You didn’t invite a "babysitter," you invited your boyfriend and your daughter (yes, Lily is your daughter too).

They’re part of your family now, and you don’t need to apologize for that.

edebby − NTA. You BIL is so full of s__t, and so self centered that I'm lost for words. His past has nothing to do with you...

How dare they even say that your BF "cheated on his dead wife" - what a cruel, inaccurate and idiotic thing to say.

Several people suggested that there might be a deeper bias hiding behind the story of the cheating babysitter.

aaslipperygypsy − NTA. And honestly, I'm not convinced the cheating dad and baby sitter story is even true. I think its more likely your BIL is a homophobe.

gdayars − Sounds like BIL has some hidden homophobia there.

Glass-Intention-3979 − There is no childhood trauma here. Its just straight up homophobia. Y

our sister and bil have concocted this "trauma" narrative in the vain hopes it saves face over their true intentions... It was abuse.

Commenters expressed concern and anger that a seven-year-old child was the target of adult insults.

Fragrant-Donut2871 − NTA, you ignored them till they decided to involve Lily. That was intentional and only served to do as much damage as possible...

instead of talking it out with you as normal adults would, they chose to go for the weakest link and went after a child.

[Reddit User] − Your BIL sounds like the type of person who is convinced a random streamer is a psychopath

who wants to m__der children and their evidence is based on how the streamer sits in their chair. NTA

Some readers were worried about the age difference and power dynamics when the couple first met.

Monday0987 − Others have plenty to say about bil. I am a bit concerned about how young you were when you got together with Mark. You were/are at very different...

Boring_Skill7480 − NTA, and they do seem h__ophobic. But OP was a 17 year old baby sitter when the relationship started.

To me that sounds kind of like an unequal power dynamic... Really seems like a double standard.

FairyCompetent − It's pretty gross that you as a 20yr old were hired as a child care professional and your older boss started a relationship with you. That's unethical.

How to Navigate a Situation Like This

If you are dealing with family members who are using their past to control your present, it is time to set very clear limits. You do not have to “pay” for things that happened decades ago in someone else’s life. It is important to stay calm but firm when you explain that your partner is not a ghost from their past.

When children are involved, the rules change entirely. Protecting a child from insults should always be the priority. If a relative is willing to say cruel things to a little girl, it is perfectly okay to step away from that relationship. You can love your family and still choose to stay away from people who don’t respect your life or your partner.

Conclusion

Family stories can be wonderful, but they can also be used as weapons. This narrator tried to include everyone, only to be met with anger and hurtful labels. It is a tough spot to be in, but standing up for a child is never the wrong choice.

What do you think about the brother-in-law’s behavior? Is he just really hurting from his past, or was he being unfair to a new couple? We would love to hear your thoughts on how to handle difficult relatives who can’t let go of the past.
