Bride Promises a Catered Beach Wedding, but Guests Find the Chicken Was Left in a Car Overnight

Some weddings are chaotic because something unexpected goes wrong, while others seem to collect one disaster after another. Bad weather, last-minute responsibilities, questionable food, and family tension can turn what should be a celebration into an endurance test for everyone involved.

The OP’s husband was invited to be part of his childhood friend’s wedding, although nobody actually asked him until the wedding was getting close. After a 12-hour drive to attend, he discovered during the rehearsal that he was not only in the wedding party but also the best man and expected to give a speech.

Then the wedding day brought torrential rain, a flooded venue area, and a completely improvised indoor ceremony. Things were already chaotic, but the food situation soon gave everyone a much bigger reason to worry. Scroll down to see why the couple abandoned the reception for a brewery.

'Wedding from hell with a side of salmonella'

Ok this is a long one, so strap in and get ready for a ride!

The story starts a few years ago when my husband's childhood friend (who moved a 12 hour drive away) got engaged in the spring.

I joked with my husband that he was going to be in the wedding. They were planning a spring wedding for the following year.

Christmas time rolls around and we've heard nothing about it, so my husband assumed he was in the clear.

The friend came up to visit for the holidays and wanted to get together to talk about my husband being in the wedding.

He just assumed my husband would be. Never asked. My husband begrudgingly said yes.

As the spring rolls closer (May wedding), I tell my husband he needs to ask him what he needs to wear.

Are we getting a suit? Groom finally, after weeks of harassing, went and picked out suits that needed to be rented. Cool. It's now April.

Now comes the fun part. We drive 12 hours to the destination.

We bring another friend couple with us and our dogs so we can make it a proper vacation after the wedding happens and they can watch the pup.

We are invited to the rehearsal where my husband is told he's actually the best man and needs to give a speech at the wedding.

We figured the brother would be. I should have seen that coming. Ok fine whatever. My husband can pull a speech out of his ass overnight no biggie.

The day of the wedding... they are getting married at an air b n b on the ocean.

But they never actually asked anyone about the wedding and the beach hasn't been opened for a beach wedding.

Sand is covering all the docks so no beach access. It's also raining. But not a little rain, absolute monsoon.

Like roads flooding. The air bnb? The entire bridal parts is staying as well as both sets of parents. There are 6 parking spaces for it.

Luckily we had our other friend to be able and drop us off. They have moved the entire house around to marry inside.

Big screen tv behind the arch and everything.

We were told this was a catered wedding. We arrive to the family cooking (where the wedding was happening) with crockpots.

I am not against a dyi gig but this was... odd. Father of the bride made the cake. Said he attempted it 12 times. It looked like it. Oh lawd.

Appetizers? Burnt pizza rolls. You know the Tostino ones.

They get married then the guests needed to break down all the chairs so they could set up tables for eating.

After my husband and I took a break and went outside on the back deck because the rain had stopped and I needed to walk away for a second.

We get the low down that the families aren't getting along.

Lots of arguments. Then a cousin comes out. She says you didn't eat the food did you? I didn't but why?

Well the chicken came from a few hours away in a cooler with no ice.

Then they forgot about it over night in the car and that's the chicken in all the crock pots. Excuse me?

By this time we've been there like 2 hours, I'm exhausted from setting up and taking down.

My husband gives his speech and we call our friends to come get us so we can high tail it out to a local brewery and get food.

I'm sure I'm missing a ton more but this was by far the worst wedding I've ever attended. I love a nice diy wedding! But this... lawd.

There is a point at almost every wedding when guests should be able to stop worrying about logistics and simply celebrate. When the weather, venue, food, and family drama all begin falling apart at once, however, the guests can end up feeling less like witnesses to a marriage and more like unpaid members of the event staff.

The OP’s experience became chaotic long before anyone discovered the chicken problem. Her husband was unexpectedly promoted to best man at the rehearsal, meaning he had almost no preparation time for his speech.

The beach ceremony became impossible because of the weather and lack of access, the house had to be rearranged, guests were recruited to move chairs and set up tables, and the supposedly catered reception turned into a family-run operation involving crockpots and homemade cake.

None of those things alone would necessarily make a wedding terrible. DIY celebrations can be charming. The emotional tipping point came when a cousin quietly warned them not to eat the chicken because it had reportedly spent the night in a car without ice.

That detail changes the story from merely disorganized to potentially dangerous. The interesting psychological element is how quickly guests can normalize escalating chaos.

Once everyone is already invested in making an event work, there can be a strong pressure to tolerate one more inconvenience, then another, because nobody wants to be the person who “ruins” the celebration. The OP and her husband eventually recognized that they had reached a reasonable limit and removed themselves rather than pretending everything was fine.

Food safety experts would have very little sympathy for the chicken’s storage method. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service states that perishable foods such as meat and poultry left at room temperature for more than two hours may be unsafe and should be discarded.

The agency identifies 40°F to 140°F as the temperature range where bacteria can multiply rapidly and recommends keeping cold food at or below 40°F.

The CDC likewise warns that raw chicken can carry pathogens including Salmonella and Campylobacter and recommends keeping poultry properly chilled and cooking it to 165°F.

That is why the cousin’s warning may have been the most responsible thing anyone did at the reception. Cooking questionable chicken in a crockpot does not automatically erase every food-safety problem created beforehand. The USDA specifically warns that some bacteria can produce toxins when food has been mishandled, and certain toxins can survive subsequent cooking.

The OP’s choice to leave therefore wasn’t simply wedding snobbery. She had already participated in setup, endured the weather disaster, supported her husband through an unexpected best-man speech, and attempted to make the celebration work. Once she learned that the main course might have been improperly stored, eating elsewhere became a sensible decision.

There is also something telling about the contrast between the wedding’s imperfections and the family’s response. A crooked cake, burnt pizza rolls, or improvised seating can become funny memories years later. Serving food that guests reasonably fear could make them sick crosses a different line.

Perhaps the best weddings aren’t necessarily the ones where everything goes according to plan. They are the ones where, when something goes badly wrong, someone recognizes it and says, “Okay, this isn’t safe anymore. Let’s fix it.” In this case, the brewery dinner may have been the most successful part of the entire reception.

Check out how the community responded:

These commenters were stunned by the wedding disaster and questioned how everything could have gone so badly

Perle1234 − Well did anyone get sick?? 😳

JesusGodLeah − Are the bride and groom still married?

marlada − What a nightmare! At least you were forewarned.

Felonious_Minx − Dad made the cake 12 times? !

These Redditors shared examples showing that simple, relaxed weddings can remain enjoyable without elaborate arrangements

melodypowers − I went to a beach airbnb wedding that was rained out.

Luckily it was catered but we had the same deal with quickly setting up and breaking down seating.

However, since it was a beach wedding it was pretty casual. They had planned to do volleyball and a campfire with smores for the reception.

Instead, the sister of the groom ran to Walmart and bought a dozen board games and tubs of ice cream. It turned out really fun.

Drix22 − DIY weddings are odd, they really can go both ways fast. One of my favorite weddings I've gone to was my cousin's.

It was a family pot luck in his barn served buffet style with just a giant row of picknick tables and some high tops sprinkled through.

There was a friend acting as a bartender, a couple of speakers with a playlist, had a blast.

Then you read stories like this and its like "I don't understand what was so hard"

kifflington − I will never understand why people going for the low-effort DIY wedding don't just accept that it's not going to be classy

whatever happens and lean into everyone just enjoying the day together,

buy a supermarket cake and a topper from Amazon then order some pizzas and wings or something.

These commenters questioned why the couple made the event complicated instead of embracing a simpler and more practical celebration

Luxe_Laine − I feel like there wasn't even a need for your husband to rent a suit for this 🤣

lighthouser41 − I read a novel where the wedding celebrants all get food poisoning from shrimp served at the wedding.

The bride's sister and the groom's brother both don't eat shrimp and thus go on the honeymoon together.

Thing is, they hate each other. They go to Hawaii. Romance ensues.

newtontonc − Maybe I missed a key point, but why was it a joke that he would be in the wedding?

Would you have eaten the crockpot chicken after hearing its travel history? Could you have stayed cheerful through the rain, surprise best-man assignment, chair-moving marathon, and homemade cake saga? Or would you have quietly followed the group straight to the nearest restaurant?
