Typical Teamwork: One Student Does Basically All The Work, Somehow Gets The Lowest Score

A hardworking high school girl invested nearly all the effort into her group presentation, handling research, scripting, and slides almost single-handedly, yet ended up with the lowest mark when her teammates outshone her in confidence during delivery.

Her partners contributed minimally: one showed up briefly with a few images, the other offered limited help, while the teacher focused solely on how actively they presented, brushing aside the behind-the-scenes work that made the entire project possible and leaving the dedicated student stunned by the unfair outcome.

One student did all the research and scripts, then earned the lowest grade due to less confident delivery.

Not the actual photo.

'AITA for telling my teacher she’s not allowed to give my group member a better grade?'

So I (16F) am in a group project class. we were in groups of 3, and I was paired with Lana (16F) and Ian (16M).

We had a week to make a presentation. I did the research, wrote most of the scripts, and put together the slides.

Lana showed up once and gave me few printed pictures for a presentation, that's the only time she "helped"

then she spent the rest of the week not doing anything, Ian helped a bit, but not much.

We all presented and the teacher said we all did a good job, then she graded us. (We use different grade system)

Lana got 10/10, Ian got 9/10 and I got a 7/10

I got upset and asked the teacher the reason she gave me the lowest grade,

all she said was that Lana was “more confident” during the presentation and Ian “helped with the visuals”

I said that I did 90% of the work and that it wasn't fair, she then said that grades are based on presentation, not effort.

The teacher looked annoyed and said she graded fairly and I shouldn't be upset with her grading based on how active we were during a presentation.

Now my teacher is telling my parents that I was rude and disrespectful and that I’m acting like I’m entitled.

Lana said I was being “too much" and I "should’ve just asked nicely”

I feel like I’m not the problem. If I worked the hardest i should've gotten the grade I deserved. AITA?

Edit: The teacher never explained whether the grade was based on the presentation or on effort.

I did present, but I wasn't as active as the others during it. I didn't mention it earlier

because I assumed the group would be graded as a whole, and since this is a new teacher, I had no idea how she graded homework,

I just felt like my effort wasn't reflected in the grade. And I probably handled it in a most terrible way possible,

but I still think the grading system is unfair and that teacher should've at least acknowledged the time I put in this project.

I got more upset when she mentioned that result mattered more than the effort which made no sense to me at all

The Redditor handled the bulk of research, scripting, and slide creation, yet ended up with a 7/10 compared to her groupmates’ higher scores. The teacher’s reasoning? Confidence and visual contributions during the presentation mattered more than prep effort. It’s a frustrating setup that many students know all too well: the quiet grinder gets penalized for not being flashy.

From one angle, the teacher’s approach makes some sense. Public speaking is a real-world skill, and delivery can make or break how information lands. A polished presenter might engage the audience better, signaling stronger communication abilities. But it ignores the foundation: without solid content, there’s nothing to deliver confidently. The Redditor’s work created the entire project. Without it, the “confident” performance would have been empty.

This ties into broader frustrations with group grading. Research shows students often perceive equal group grades as unfair when contributions are unequal, leading to resentment and reduced motivation. Studies on group work assessment highlight that “free-riding” – where some members contribute minimally – occurs frequently, with reports of unequal contributions in many student teams.

Experts in education stress the need for balanced rubrics that evaluate both process and product. For instance, best practices recommend assessing individual contributions alongside group outcomes to promote fairness.

Susan M. Brookhart and Amir Rasooli, experts on classroom assessment, advise that “for grading purposes, assess individuals – don’t give ‘group grades'” to avoid perceptions of unfairness and encourage true collaboration. This approach ensures effort behind the scenes isn’t invisible.

Another key point: rubrics should clarify criteria upfront. If presentation delivery was weighted heavily, it needed to be explicit from the start. Without that transparency, students like this Redditor feel blindsided. Teachers can mitigate this by using detailed rubrics covering content quality, research depth, individual roles, and delivery, helping everyone understand how marks are earned.

Neutral advice here: the student could have approached the conversation more calmly, perhaps asking to see the rubric or requesting feedback on improving delivery next time. But the core issue remains valid. Grading systems should reflect comprehensive contributions, not just the final show. Peers and teachers weighing in online largely sided with the student, calling out favoritism and poor lessons in accountability.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

Some people believe the teacher is wrong for grading primarily or solely on presentation instead of effort or content.

dragon_Porra − NTA If this is a team project, then the whole team gets the same mark.

Please see if you can see your teacher's senior, principal. Involve your parents. What this person has done is outright favouratism

Syric13 − As a High school teacher, this teacher sucks. Everyone telling you you are wrong sucks. You are 100% NTA

Don't listen to them. You are 100% correct. The teacher's lesson was inappropriate.

Grading based on presentation alone is a s__tty lesson and deserves to be called out on it.

perfidious_snatch − NTA. Your teacher took what sucks most about group presentations

(one person does all the work, but everyone gets the same grade) and made it worse!

How can you be graded down for the presentation when without you there would be nothing to present?

SoImaRedditUserNow − "she then said that grades are based on presentation, not effort"

If she really said that, teacher ssssssuuuuUUUUUUUUUCCCCKKKKKKSSSS. That is as ridiculous a statement as I've ever heard.

The teacher's model of "presentation based grades" does not hold water.

I won't deny that clearly presenting information is very important, but if there is no information to begin with... NTA.

Some people think the teacher might be justified if a clear rubric specified grading on presentation skills.

Capelily − INFO: Did your teacher make it clear that you'd be graded on presentation only?

I did 90% of the work and that it wasn't fair, she then said that grades are based on presentation,

not effort If your teacher didn't make this clear ahead of time, then NTA.

armchairshrink99 − INFO: what was the rubric for this project? Did it specify that scores were based on presentation alone

or did it specifically mention that it was based on effort in putting the presentation together?

desert_red_head − Teacher here, and I need INFO. What was the rubric that was used for the project?

If you have not seen it, then demand to see it so you can see exactly why you were deducted points.

If your teacher won’t show you their rubric/grading scale, then it is worth pursuing further.

However, if you have had access to the rubric/grading scale the whole time then y t a and should understand how you lost points but Lana did not.

Consistent-Star5745 − INFO: Were you given a rubric ahead of time explaining the grading

and that you were being graded on your ability to present more than the content you were presenting on?

EmbeeBug − Do you have the grading rubric? If the purpose of the presentation was presenting and that's what you were being graded on,

like your actual oral presentation skills, then your teacher has every right to give them better grades.

If it was being graded on the content of the presentation then maybe you are justified, but still you shouldn't be rude to a teacher

Some people view this as a harsh real-world lesson where charisma and presentation get rewarded over hard work.

KiyoMizu1996 − NTA. You just learned a very important life lesson… there will be people who put in the bare minimum of work

but bc they have charisma, they will be rewarded while those who do the most work will be ignored, penalized or treated w condescension.

Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of advice for you other than to buckle down and study hard

so you will have more opportunities and choices when it comes time to launch into adulthood. Good luck

In the end, this saga shows how group projects can teach tough realities about effort, recognition, and fairness. Was the teacher’s focus on presentation delivery reasonable, or did it shortchange the real work behind the scenes? How would you handle a similar imbalance, speak up, document everything, or just power through? Drop your thoughts below!
