Young Woman Learns She’s Pregnant Just Days After Boyfriend Receives A Terminal Diagnosis

Few life events are more overwhelming than receiving devastating news about someone you love. When that heartbreak collides with an unexpected pregnancy, every possible choice can feel equally painful, leaving no obvious path forward.

The original poster (OP), a 21-year-old college student, recently learned that her 22-year-old boyfriend has been diagnosed with leukemia that doctors currently believe may be terminal. While the couple was still trying to process that reality, OP discovered she is pregnant.

She says her boyfriend’s outlook immediately brightened after hearing the news, believing the baby would give his life lasting meaning.

Now OP finds herself torn between honoring the future they once imagined together and facing the possibility of raising a child alone if the worst happens. She is struggling to separate her own wishes from the weight of her boyfriend’s illness.

The pregnancy offered her boyfriend a future symbolically, but it could require her to live that future practically

'Pregnant with potentially dying bf’s baby'

Alt account because I cannot have this traced to me.

Two weeks ago my (21) bf (22) was suddenly diagnosed with leukemia and unfortunately they think it’s terminal and give him less than a year.

He’s been in this mental place since then where he’s clearly very depressed about it but also not opening up about it.

Meanwhile, I was late on my period and yesterday I decided to take a pregnancy test.

It was positive and I told my bf last night. It changed his mood a lot.

He said things like “My life won’t be meaningless after all,” clearly assuming I’ll keep the baby.

And part of me wants to. Like, we are pretty serious and had talked about having children in the future, and had it not been for his diagnosis,

I think id certainly be for keeping this one since it shouldn’t come until we’re both graduated from college.

But circumstances being what they are idk.

I really want him to have his legacy here or whatever

because I get how s__tty it must feel to be on the verge of being a full member of society and have that taken from you,

but just thinking realistically here, who knows if he would even get to meet his baby?

And then I’m left to be a single mother. I know I could do it, but I also know it would be hard.

Sometimes love places people in situations where every available choice carries grief. The OP is not deciding whether she loves her boyfriend or whether his life has meaning.

She is being asked, by circumstances rather than by him alone, to make a permanent decision about pregnancy while both of them are still in shock from a devastating diagnosis.

The emotional conflict is shaped by anticipatory grief, fear, guilt, and responsibility. Her boyfriend appears to see the pregnancy as proof that part of him might continue after his death. His sudden hope is understandable because terminal illness can shatter a person’s sense of identity, purpose, and future.

The OP, however, must consider a much longer timeline. She may face pregnancy while supporting a seriously ill partner, followed by bereavement, financial pressure, and possibly raising a child alone. Wanting to comfort him does not erase those realities, and considering them does not make her cold or disloyal.

A fresh perspective is that the pregnancy has temporarily become two different things to them. For him, it represents legacy and meaning. For her, it represents an entire lifetime of caregiving, parenting, and uncertainty. That emotional imbalance matters.

His diagnosis deserves compassion, but it should not turn her body or future child into a solution for his fear of being forgotten. A baby may carry his memory, yet a child should not be expected to repair an adult’s despair or prove that someone’s life mattered.

The American Psychological Association describes anticipatory grief as the sorrow and anxiety people experience when they expect a loved one to die. It can create both meaningful reflection and intense emotional strain, sometimes causing people to relate to the future as though the loss has already happened.

The American Cancer Society also notes that partners of people with cancer may suppress their own distress while focusing on the patient, even as changing responsibilities create significant pressure and relationship strain.

That insight helps explain why the OP may feel pulled toward keeping the pregnancy partly to protect her boyfriend from hopelessness. She is already carrying his grief alongside her own.

Yet a decision made mainly to ease his suffering could leave her responsible for consequences that extend far beyond his prognosis. Her uncertainty is not selfishness.

It is evidence that she understands the seriousness of becoming a parent under circumstances neither of them expected.

The most realistic path is to slow the decision down and separate love from obligation. She should consider what she would choose if guilt, legacy, and fear were temporarily removed, while seeking support from a neutral counselor and trusted medical professionals.

Whatever she decides, her boyfriend’s life is not meaningless, and she should not have to prove otherwise by sacrificing control over her own future.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These Redditors said the decision requires professional counseling, not online judgment

Obstetrix − No right or wrong answers and this is above Reddits pay grade.

I think a trip to the doctor to confirm the pregnancy is in order followed by some individual and couples therapy to decide how to proceed.

Do what feels right for you OP, it’s your body and your life.

Roma_Genovese − This is way above Reddit advice, respectfully and sensitively.

Please, please see a therapist or professional and let all of this out girl. I’m so sorry. Sending tons of love to you.

throwawayGB2024 − Yeah like was mentioned above, this isn’t for Reddit. Please get professional advice.

So sorry to hear about this d__adful situation :(

These commenters advised confirming the pregnancy medically before making further decisions

Inevitable-Passion24 − First off, I am so sorry to hear of your bf's diagnosis. That news is very fresh and new, he's obviously still feeling from it, understandably.

Two weeks is not enough time to come to grips with your own mortality, especially at 22 years of age.

Please give him time to deal. OP, have you confirmed your pregnancy with a doctor?

Or multiple at home tests? Please do so if you haven't yet.

One positive test can be a fluke, even with a late period, especially with the stress you're under.

If the pregnancy has been confirmed, then it's time to talk to your families.

This is way bigger than just the two of you. Good luck to you both, OP. Praying for strength for journey. ❤️

These users warned about the emotional and practical realities of becoming a young single mother

No_Practice_970 − Don't let people romanticize having your dying boyfriend's baby.

Being a single mother who is unable to grieve properly and move on because you have a baby that needs you can really mess with your mental well-being.

Plus, remember you're not garunteed a healthy baby.

Everyone says they're willing to help, but few people are willing to give up their time and freedom.

SuccessMagnet103 − 21 is way too young to be starting your life off with the struggles of single motherhood.

Think hard on that one. It would be an easy fix for me no questions asked though.

its_emd − I would end the pregnancy. Telling him was a huge mistake if you’re not even sure if you want to keep the baby.

I wouldn’t want to be a single mom, it’s not easy at all.

I would highly advise you to end the pregnancy but don’t let him know just now,

wait a few days and then tell him you got your period or that you had a miscarriage. Don't wait too long to do it.

These Redditors emphasized that only OP can decide what feels right for her future

TurbulentDrawing6 − Raising a child while stricken with grief over losing your significant other would be extremely difficult.

That said, if my husband died, I would want our son we had together even if he couldn’t be with me to raise him from behind babyhood,

because my husband is the love of my life and I would want that.

That’s how I feel. That isn’t what matters.

It’s how you feel. I only mention this because it’s something you want to think about, along with all the other heavy aspects of this decision.

You’re so young…I don’t know if it would be expected for you to feel the same way I do about my husband when it comes to your boyfriend.

Hubby and I have been together since you were six years old.

I don’t know if it would be fair to you to end up with such a permanent commitment to a person or a person’s memory

when they can’t stand by your side and build the kind of lifelong bond that sort of commitment would be suitable for. This is a very personal decision.

Only you can make it. Just consider all the factors and do the best you can. There is no right or wrong answer.

I’m so sorry you are going through this. My heart breaks for you and your boyfriend.

sheiciebai − If you keep it and are in the us get married. The child should be able to get benefits.

Complex_Cow1184 − He is dying. You can understand his perspective. But at the end of the day it’s YOUR decision.

Im sorry. This is hard. And above our pay grade

Can the couple discuss every possible future without treating his preference as an obligation? How can he create a meaningful legacy that does not depend entirely on her pregnancy?
