in Social Issues

Starting a family is a deeply personal journey, and for many people, the path to parenthood does not always look the way they imagined.

But even when everyone involved has good intentions, complicated feelings can quickly appear.

The original poster (OP) and her wife wanted to have a child but faced expensive fertility treatments and long waiting lists.

After choosing an alternative route and finding someone they trusted, they were overjoyed when their dream of becoming parents came true.

However, their happiness was later interrupted when another couple asked for access to the same donor.

What started as a difficult conversation eventually turned into a friendship fallout and public accusations.

Read on to see why OP refused to share the donor’s information.

'AITA for hiding our sperm donor from a lesbian couple?'

This actually happened a few years ago but recently just ended after being

kicked out from a friend group.. Im currently a 35F married to my wife

coming up six years.

So end of 2022-early2023, my wife and I decided to take the next step and

start planning for a baby. We not well off, although we own our house but

in my country its cost ALOT to go through a fertility clinic and the waiting

list is 3+ years, so we decided to do the home method (Cup & syringe

method), its exactly what you think haha. Dont worry, we bought sterile

cup and syringe all 1 time use.

Fast forward after a few meet ups with our chosen sperm donor (but we

call him gravy daddy for the LOLs) decided we like him as a person.

He flys to out house, do the deed a few times, (cup and syringe method

obviously) because this girl was ovulating so had to make sure we pumped

him dry before leaving hahahaha (ewww when I think about it).. Fast

forward, duhhh dahhh Im pregnant after the 1st attempt.

We hide it for a good 4-5 months until we decided to start to tell our

friends that im pregnant.

There is a lesbian couple who is also trying to plan for a baby but at that

time they didnt want to know to father so they went through fertility clinic

and been on the waiting list for 2.5 years at that time.

Few months pass and im nearly due, they asked if we wanted to go out for

lunch, of course we say yes because this pregnant hippo loves food.

After 30mins of catching up and food almost done, they dropped the

question, something along the lines of "you know we've been on the

waiting list for 3 years now and we can't wait. We desperate to start a

family like you. We were wondering if its weird to ask you if we can use

your sperm donor?"

Honestly I was abit taken aback by this and had no words, lucky my

awesome wife ended up saying something, look we'll have to think about it

and we'll definitely talk to the sperm donor aswell.

So after a week talking between ourselves and with the gravy daddy, my

wife caught up with one of them at work and said that sperm donor didnt

want to donate to another family.

So what we thought would be the end of it turned into a few friends

messaging saying we should had over the contact info to the couple so

they can talk to the sperm donor them selfs, and that they deserve a shot

at making a family aswell. I ended up messaging them to f@$k off and

leave us alone, and we will never give them the donors info - hormones I'll tell ya.

Anyways I give birth and as of today my ray of sunshine that test every

patience I have but love him to bits nearly 2 years old, the couple messaged

us to say they also found someone and now pregnant. Obviously we are

happy for them and reply with congrats etc, they didnt reply back.. BUT

Hour later a post goes up on Facebook with us tagged right at the end

saying how we slowed down their family plans for not allowing access to

our sperm donor a few years ago etc. So now we getting private messages

from their family and friends calling us all sorts of names.. Before we even

had a chance to comment on their post - BLOCKED.. How are we dealing

with it now, BLOCKED and deleted every one who messaged us, didnt even

reply.. Funny thing is, one of the couples unblocked us and we quickly

BLOCKED them.. So, AITA for not sharing our sperm donor?. UPDATE #1:.

Just to clarify some of the common questions.. Im actually from New

Zealand where rules are stricter than most countries.. When going through

fertility clinics here you can choose a few pathways.

1. Public system: Public funded but certain criteria applies and other

factors but there's a long wait time (this takes years).. 2. Private funded -

you pay for "everything", but speeds up the process.

Ohhh and the gravy daddy is GAY 🏳️‍🌈 , and he has met our son and wants to

be known as a uncle only.. UPDATE #2:

A few messages for updates, literally nothing to update but I did get a

private message which I think it'll be cool for those nosey people out there

How did we find our sperm donor?

Not long after NZ came out of our final COVID lock down, we went to a pub

and made friends with a group of people next to us and ended up meeting

up with that group of people that night for some drinks.. Ended up talking

about wanting to start a family and saving money to go through fertility clinic.

A few of them knew a gay guy who was thinking about donating to a clinic

and they ended up messaging that guy the following day. I honestly forgot

about it until they txted and said he would like to make contact with us

knowing we were a lesbian couple. We talked for a good month and ended

asking if he was happy to meet up a few times to really have a feel for each

other.. We flew to him acouple times, and decided he was our guy 😁

Family-building can be an incredibly emotional journey, especially for people who face financial, medical, or logistical barriers along the way.

Many people understand the desperation of waiting years for the chance to become parents, and that longing can make disappointment feel unbearable.

But wanting something deeply does not automatically create a right to someone else’s personal choices, relationships, or resources. In OP’s situation, the conflict was never simply about sperm.

It was about boundaries, consent, and the assumption that another couple’s difficult journey gave them ownership over someone else’s private arrangement.

OP and her wife made a personal decision about how they wanted to grow their family.

They carefully chose a donor they trusted, built a relationship with him, and considered the emotional implications of bringing a child into the world through that process.

The donor was not just a biological contribution; he was a person who had his own preferences and boundaries. When he decided he did not want to donate to another family, that choice mattered too.

A different perspective is that the other couple’s request likely came from a place of genuine pain rather than pure entitlement.

Spending years waiting for fertility treatment can create feelings of frustration and helplessness, especially when someone close appears to have found a faster path.

Seeing OP succeed may have unintentionally highlighted what they were still missing.

Their emotions were understandable. However, turning that sadness into pressure, involving mutual friends, and publicly blaming OP crossed a line.

This situation reflects exactly why boundaries matter. OP was not refusing to help someone access a medical treatment or withholding something that belonged to the community.

She was respecting an agreement involving another person’s body, privacy, and willingness to participate.

The donor’s decision was his own, and OP had no obligation to convince him otherwise or hand over his personal information.

The most complicated part is that both sides experienced a painful reality. One couple experienced the heartbreak of waiting longer than they hoped.

Another couple experienced being blamed for respecting a donor’s decision.

Empathy can exist for both situations without requiring one person to surrender their boundaries.

Ultimately, kindness does not mean giving people access to every opportunity you have received.

Sometimes the most respectful response is accepting that another person’s journey will look different from yours.

OP and her wife were allowed to protect the trust, privacy, and relationships involved in creating their family.

A difficult “no” may hurt someone in the moment, but it is still better than saying yes to something that everyone involved is not comfortable with.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters focused on consent, arguing that the donor’s clear refusal ended the discussion

Icy-Performer571 − It would have 100% been an AH move if you had

handed over the donors information with out their permission. Sometimes

wanting a kid so bad can make you do stupid things. Ignore them, block

them, don't worry. If anyone asks your response should be "we respected

the wishes of the person who donated for us.

I am sorry that [other family] can not do the same". NTA

FYourAppLeaveMeAlone − Sperm donor doesn't consent. End of story. Consent is a thing. NTA

JustWowinCA − Donor said no. End of discussion. NTA.

JohnExcrement − “He has asked us to respect his privacy. Topic closed. ”

This group suggested OP respond publicly with a calm explanation that the donor declined and that respecting his decision was the correct action

Immediate_Mud_2858 − #NTA Gravy Daddy (🤣) said he didn’t want you to

give his contact information to anyone. #Post that to Fb. Then block everyone after a few hours.

ReineDesRenards − I'm a kiwi too, and I would have thought you'd be

breaking quite a few privacy laws if you were to hand over his info after he

specifically told you to say "no". Those AHs literally blocked you because

you wouldn't break the law for their convenience.

I'd state that in a post and point out the f__k wits who blocked you because

you didn't want to break the law. NAL but a quick search showed: If you

shared it to them digitally it could fall under Harmful Digital

Communications Act 2015 (because the couple would be harassing him).

Also, had you shared the info your donor could have sued you even though you're an individual, not an organization.

Fancy-Statistician82 − Why would you block? Create a bland PR paragraph

that you support everyone's journey to parenthood, but that when you

reached out to your sperm donor they politely declined to be referred for

additional fatherhood outside of traditional banks. And you must respect

his personal choices. Best of luck and joy to everyone, etc, etc.

Get that little PR paragraph pasted to absolutely everyone who can hear it.

These commenters criticized the other couple’s sense of entitlement

Cheshire-Cad − . ..How the f__k is finding a sperm donor so difficult? Y'all

make it sound like he's donating the entire testicle. Obviously, there's legal

and social risks. But that's the case with regular baby-making too.

RadioSupply − How the hell do they think they’re so entitled to another

person’s body? ? As a d__e and feminist, they are way off base here. They’re

being incredibly entitled and creepy. This man did a one-off donation to

you and your wife because the vibe was good and he wanted to. That’s consent.

They want to badger your donor for a biological half-sibling to your kid, and

then drag you for not handing him over like a borrowed hammer? They’re

nuts. Call them out for their entitlement and their absolute disrespect to you and your donor.

Ladyooh − NTA So the other lesbian couple (and their friends & family)

don't believe in consent? Your donor said NO, but they wanted his info to,

what? convince him otherwise? Harass him because what they want is

more important than his choice? Just keep saying that you asked him, he

said no and that should have been the end of it. Your ex friends are gross.

princessjamiekay − This is beyond screwed up. They felt entitled to his

sperm? Don’t be friends with there weirdos

Choosing a sperm donor is an incredibly personal decision, especially when it involves building a family, legal considerations, and a child’s future.

OP and her wife created a connection with someone they trusted, and the donor himself made the choice not to donate again.

While the other couple’s frustration is understandable after years of waiting, turning that disappointment into public blame crossed a line.

Do you think OP should have shared the donor’s contact information, or was protecting that agreement the only reasonable choice? Share your thoughts below!
