He Planned an Adults-Only Murder Mystery, Then Had to Choose Between Excluding a 7-Year-Old or Ruining the Guest List

Planning a birthday party sounds simple until you realize your guest list has somehow turned into a parenting negotiation.

A 41-year-old man was preparing a 90s-themed murder mystery party for his birthday. The game was designed for teenagers and adults, with mild violence, mild romance, and suggestive themes. More importantly, it required at least seven players to work properly.

The problem was that he did not actually have seven adults available.

So he invited two children, an 11-year-old girl and a 10-year-old girl, to help fill the required roles.

There was also a 9-year-old boy who would be at the host’s house that evening but would not participate. He would most likely spend the night in another room playing Minecraft.

That left one child.

A 7-year-old boy.

And suddenly, the birthday party had become surprisingly complicated.

'AITA for telling my friend her 7 y/o is not invited to my birthday m__der mystery party?'

I (41M) am having a 90s themed m__der mystery party for my birthday next week at a mutual friends’ house.

My friend (42F) has an 11 y/o daughter and a 7 y/o son, and our mutual friends have a 10 y/o daughter and a 9 y/o son who will all...

For this specific m__der mystery, we need at least 7 people for it work. It is marketed for teens and adults (Mild violence, mild romance, and suggestive themes).

To get the requisite number of players, we had to invite the two elder girls. The 9 y/o boy is also not participating,

(EDIT: but lives at the host location), so will mostly likely be playing Minecraft in the other room the whole evening. That leaves the 7 y/o.

I do not recall explicitly discussing with my friend whether her son could attend, until a couple of days ago when I asked her and her daughter about their costume...

My friend told me not to talk so loud because they were trying to hide the party from her son.

Fast forward to tonight and she messaged me asking if it was okay for her son to attend and participate in the m__der mystery.

I told her that I didn’t really think that was a good idea because he would be a distraction.

She then claimed I had previously mentioned that her son could come and that he was now aware of the party and wanted to come. I said that I didn’t...

She responded that it was odd that only her son was being left out.

I replied that the other boy would not be participating, and that in a perfect world I would have invited only adults, but we needed to fill the quota.

I said if he came I’d prefer if he was playing in the other room, but did not participate.

She said that it was a clear I didn’t want him to attend and that she would fine something else to do with him that night.

And that was was fine with that. (FYI, her husband is not coming and could take care of their son.)

Even though she said she was fine, I still feel backed into a corner into letting him attend. I feel awful because I love her son and feel like I...

However, in my head I pictured a somewhat serious but still fun event where all the players were focused on the game and not being distracted by a small child.

But it could be argued that I have already given up that idea by including the 10 and 11 year olds, so what does it matter if a 7 y/o...

Additional info that seems relevant to me: my friend is awesome and I love her and her children deeply,

but she is also super flaky when it comes to planned fun. I’m also very put off by changing of plans.

Also the conversation was all over text so I may have misinterpreted her thoughts and feelings.

So should I back down and invite the 7 y/o or should I drop it now that she’s said they won’t bring him?

The Invitation That Was Never Really Discussed

The man’s friend, a 42-year-old woman, has two children, the 11-year-old daughter and the 7-year-old son.

The birthday host says he loves both children and has nothing against the younger boy. His concern was simply that a seven-year-old would be too young to participate in a murder mystery intended for teens and adults.

He had apparently never clearly discussed whether the boy could attend.

Then, a few days before the party, he was talking with his friend and her daughter about costumes.

His friend suddenly told him to lower his voice because they were trying to keep the party a secret from her son.

That was when he realized the boy already knew something was happening.

A few days later, the friend texted and directly asked whether her son could attend and participate.

The host said he did not think it was a good idea.

His concern was not that the boy was badly behaved. He simply thought a seven-year-old would be distracting during a game that was supposed to have a somewhat serious atmosphere.

His friend disagreed.

She reminded him that she believed he had previously said her son could come.

At that point, the situation became uncomfortable.

Why Was One Child Being Included but Not Another?

The host explained that the two older girls were only participating because he needed enough players for the mystery to work.

The 9-year-old boy wasn’t playing either.

He would simply be in another room.

So, ideally, the 7-year-old could do the same.

But the host did not want him there.

He admitted that if he had been planning the party from scratch, he would have preferred an adults-only event. The children were already an exception because he needed enough people to reach the game’s minimum number of players.

His friend eventually told him that it was obvious he did not want her son there.

She said she would find something else for the boy to do that evening.

The host agreed that this was fine.

But afterward, he still felt guilty.

He loves his friend’s children and did not want the younger boy to feel deliberately excluded.

At the same time, he had imagined a particular kind of evening.

He wanted everyone playing to stay focused on the mystery, follow the clues, and get into character without having to constantly accommodate a seven-year-old.

There was another complication.

His friend was notoriously flaky when it came to plans.

The host admitted that he was especially sensitive to last-minute changes, which made him even more reluctant to add another variable to the evening.

Maybe the Problem Was Created by the Guest List

The more he thought about it, the more he wondered whether he had created the problem himself.

If the game was meant for teens and adults, why had he invited 10- and 11-year-olds in the first place?

If a 9-year-old was already going to be hanging around the house, was excluding a 7-year-old really necessary?

And if the children were close enough in age to socialize together, would it really matter if another child was present?

Those questions made him reconsider his position.

But there was also a basic principle at play.

It was his birthday.

He was allowed to decide who participated in his party.

The question was whether being technically allowed to exclude someone also made it considerate.

Why This Became More Complicated Than It Needed to Be

The problem here is less about the seven-year-old himself and more about the mixed signals created by the guest list.

The host wanted an adult-oriented game but needed children to reach the minimum number of players. Once he made that compromise, however, the age boundary became much less clear.

The 10- and 11-year-olds were already being treated as old enough to participate.

Meanwhile, the 9-year-old was going to be present but excluded from the game.

That made the seven-year-old’s exclusion feel personal, even if that was not the intention.

There is also a difference between deciding that a child is too young for a particular game and deciding that the child should not attend the party at all.

The host could reasonably say, “He can’t participate in the murder mystery.”

That is a different question from saying, “He can’t come.”

And according to the post, the friend ultimately accepted that distinction.

She found another arrangement for her son instead of forcing the issue.

Here's how people reacted to the post:

Several people argued that the situation looked unfair because the host had already made exceptions for children.

Maximum_Law801 − You managed to make this incredibly messy. Inviting some kids in a friend group, and not others.

Inviting one sibling not the other… yeah, I get you don’t have kids on your own, because that’s a recepie for disaster.

The kids are so close image it should be all or none. Apologise to your friends and be clear next time.

Swedette17 − ESH. There's such a small age gap between 7 and 9 that it does seem intentional.

Can those two not hang out in another room? You're allowing the two older girls to play? Did you just not know any other adults?

i_want_babs − So you don’t have enough friends to have a m__der mystery night without having to invite 10-11 year olds? Then you’re asking if you are rude for wanting...

Lopsided_Tomatillo27 − YTA It’s s__tty to invite one kid because you don’t have enough friends to fill out your party,

but not her sibling because you have no use for him. If your friend was a good mom, she’d skip your party for treating her kids as props.

BuzzClucking − A 40 year old man disinviting kids so they don't ruin his themed birthday party. Is this peak reddit?

testBunny93 − Idk man. You're including 10 and 11 year old into a m__der mystery game for teens and adults. They're not teens but close enough. So I think you...

What I don't get here is that you're inviting his sibling, but not him. Idk, I see people are saying NTA, you can have anyone you want at your party,...

Others felt the friend was also partly responsible for assuming her son could participate without clearly confirming it first.

Known-Grapefruit4032 − Firstly, YTA. Be flexible. Stop trying to micromanage every element of this party. The 7 year old needs to come, fine, rethink, let him play Minecraft in the...

Second - it's weird that you don't know enough adults to make up a 7 person game. And it's weird that you chose a 7 person game knowing you are...

This whole thing is mega clunky, so the least you can do is be flexible about the extra kid, when you're relying on other kids to make your party possible.

Urbanyeti0 − YTA you said teen and adult, perfectly fine, but then you wanted more So now 11 and 10 yo girls are coming, okay, again your party your choice....

This is where imo you become TA, because if you’re hosting a non involved 9 yo, you could just as easily plonk the 7yo next to them The reason you...

RawrRRitchie − Yta It is marketed for teens and adults Why are you allowing children at all. 10 and 11 is not a teenager.

RoofPreader − ESH. It would have been much better to find other adults to play than to have allowed a 10 and 11 year old in on the action. This...

That said, your friend shouldn't have automatically assumed their kid would be able to participate, particularly with the party's theme.

The host was not wrong for wanting his birthday to go a certain way.

But the situation became messy because the rules were never completely consistent.

If the murder mystery genuinely required participants to be teenagers or adults, then the 7-year-old should not play.

But once two younger children were invited to participate, the argument for excluding one sibling became much harder to defend.

Fortunately, nobody appears to have turned this into a full-blown friendship-ending fight. His friend accepted the decision and planned something else for her son.

Maybe that is the best outcome.

Sometimes the easiest way to avoid a birthday disaster is to accept that your carefully planned evening will never be quite as tidy as the plan looked on paper.

Was the host justified in keeping the 7-year-old out, or did inviting the older children make the exclusion unfair?
