Divorce is rarely just between two people. It tends to pull in families, loyalties, and sometimes uncomfortable alliances that make an already painful situation even harder to navigate. When someone you trust ends up on the “other side,” things can spiral fast.

In this story, a woman discovers that her sister’s husband is representing her ex during their divorce. She tries to keep her distance, but a family dinner brings everything to the surface. What starts as tension quickly turns into something much more explosive. Scroll down to see how it all unfolded.

At a family dinner meant to reconnect, tensions quietly simmer beneath polite smiles until one comment changes everything

'AITA for calling my sister’s husband a piece of s__t because he’s representing my ex in our divorce?'

I asked my ex for a divorce two months ago, and I found out a week later

that my sister’s husband was going to be his solicitor.

I wasn’t completely surprised, as my ex has helped his career a lot, but I was still hurt when my sister told me.

I’ve avoided him since finding out, but my parents invited everyone over for dinner, and I missed them, so I went.

I tried really hard to bite my tongue, but he kept referring to me as my ex’s wife and told me that if he were me,

he would stay married because I was going to lose a lot if I divorced my ex.

I ended up telling him he was a real piece of s__t in front of everybody, including his daughters.

My sister got angry at me for saying that in front of her daughters, but I was so mad I told her I didn’t care

because he was a b__tard so now she's pissed at me.

In complex situations where personal relationships overlap with professional roles, conflicts of interest can arise in ways that deeply affect fairness and trust. According to the National Academies, a lawyer “shall not represent a client if the representation involves a concurrent conflict of interest,” meaning their responsibilities to another person or even their own personal interests could interfere with their ability to remain objective.

This principle highlights a core ethical concern: when someone is expected to act impartially, any competing loyalty, whether to another client, a family member, or personal gain, can compromise their judgment.

The source further explains that even when conflicts exist, professionals must carefully assess whether they can still provide fair and competent representation. In many cases, especially when two opposing sides are directly involved, such conflicts are considered too risky to allow.

Beyond legal settings, psychology also provides insight into why these situations become so complicated.

The concept of “multiple relationships,” explained by ****, refers to situations where an individual holds more than one role with another person, such as being both a family member and a professional advisor. These overlapping roles can create blurred boundaries, making it difficult to maintain fairness and objectivity.

In these cases, even if no harm is intended, the risk of bias increases significantly. A person may consciously or unconsciously favor one side due to emotional ties or personal history. This can lead to decisions that appear unfair, even if the individual believes they are acting professionally.

The encyclopedia emphasizes that such dual relationships often create power imbalances and ethical dilemmas, particularly when one party may feel disadvantaged or betrayed.

Another important factor is perception. A conflict of interest does not require actual wrongdoing; it is enough that the situation could appear to influence judgment.

As noted in the National Academies resource, maintaining public trust requires avoiding not only real conflicts but also those that might reasonably be seen as compromising integrity.

Ultimately, these sources underline a shared message: clear boundaries are essential. When personal and professional roles collide, stepping back or even withdrawing entirely may be necessary to protect fairness, relationships, and ethical standards.

Without these safeguards, even well-intentioned actions can lead to tension, mistrust, and lasting damage in both personal and professional spheres.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

ghostforest − NTA. Do not socialize with your BIL or give him or your sister access to information about you right now.

It could be used against you. I'm frankly shocked that your BIL took on this case given the proximity of the relationship.

Has he ever given you legal advice or represented you in any way?

Because that could be enough to disqualify him from representing your husband if you're in the US.

Make sure your lawyer knows about your BIL and any previous legal relationship you may have had, even if it seemed casual to you.

It may not be legal for your BIL to represent a client against you.

Your BIL is an ass, and if he didn't want his daughters to know that, he shouldn't have been an ass.

Your sister should be ashamed. ETA: Thanks for the awards!

poweller65 − It seems like an ethical breach of client confidentiality to be discussing the case with other people

and especially with op there as the opposing client in the divorce

Ksscustomer − NTA. Sounds like he could be breaking some rules by doing this,

like he could get confidential information through your sister, etc. Might be able to get him removed and/or screwed for misconduct

LouisV25 − I’m a U.S. lawyer. Here there is a conflict of interest.

Call your local bar or ask your attorney if that is a conflict of interest in your country.

If it is, you can have him removed from the case WITHOUT hurting his career. That is pure BS!

ivanthemute − NTA and a massive ethics breach.

Yes, he's family, and that alone is enough for him to be censured by the state bars here in the US.

As you said "solicitor" and not "lawyer," are we to assume this is in the UK or another commonwealth nation (like Australia? )

[Reddit User] − NTA he should have said it would be a conflict of interest and deferred him to another lower lawyer.

His comments at dinner were unwarranted, and he should have kept them to himself. Edit-Mistype

PlatinumHumingbird − NTA 1, surely that's a conflict of interest and not allowed due to inside knowledge.

2. That's really bad judgment on his part, saying how 'great he is at his job' and talking about your case and trying to make you nervous.

Personally, I'd find out who you could report him to, as I don't think this whole situation is fair to you at all or legal from his side.

IchfindkeinenNamen − NTA. I wonder if he could get disbarred for this.

alternativeedge7 − NTA. I’d report him to his bar association and his boss if he works for someone.

[Reddit User] − That's a conflict of interest. Major ethics breach.

He could lose his license to practice law for representing either of you in the divorce because he's related to you.

At least, in America. Please report him to whoever is responsible for licenses,

because he deserves to at least be put on probation for this. NTA. Call him whatever you want so long as it's true.

CakeZealousideal1820 − Report him to the bar.

These users criticized his behavior at dinner as inappropriate and bullying

no_good_namez − Do you have a solicitor of your own?

If so, he should not be communicating directly with you on this matter and may be subject to sanctions.

Representative or not, it is vile to bombard you at family dinner with unsolicited marital advice that sounds threatening.

It’s also gross; he thinks you should stay in a marriage for gain. NTA

Lemoneecrush − NTA. I can almost get past him being his lawyer if they’re close, but even that feels gross, as your ex should understand

that he is your family member and should not be involved. Where I go completely NTA is his bringing up information

that he only knows because of his professional relationship with your ex in a personal setting.

It’s rude, wrong, and probably could get him in trouble with a judge. INFO: How do you parents feel about this?

Feels really slimy for them to just be chill about it.

MadTom65 − NTA. Also, it may be a conflict of interest for him. In any event, he shouldn’t be bullying you at a family gathering.

Why is your sister enabling him? Is your ex also a solicitor?

This user mocked the situation and insulted both partners’ choices

usenamessuckass − Your ex asked your sister’s husband to represent him. Your sister’s husband said yes.

So you and your sister have terrible taste in men. At least you’re getting rid of yours. NTA.

Family dinners are supposed to come with comfort food, not legal threats and emotional landmines. While many sympathized with the woman’s frustration, others wondered if the public outburst only added fuel to an already messy situation.

Still, it raises a bigger question: when loyalty and professionalism clash, which one should win? And if someone crosses a line first, is it ever wrong to call them out no matter who’s watching? What would you have done in her place?
